Chinese Xiaomi has beaten Samsung, becoming the number one smartphone vendor in the worldโ€™s largest mobile market, China.

In a press release by the International Data Corporationx, IDC, 420.7 million smartphones was shipped to China in 2014 out of which Xiaomi had 12.5% of the market share, Samsung followed with 12.1%, Lenovo with 11.2%, Huawei had 9.8% and other smartphone vendors shared the remaining 44.2%.

According to the release, Xiaomi was able to top the market because of its โ€œdecent specificationsโ€ and the low price of its phones โ€“ Also, its sales hype through the flash sales, helped it maintain the top position. IDC however attributed Samsungโ€™s drop to the โ€˜immenseโ€™ competition from Xiaomi and other Chinese vendors.

โ€œXiaomi’s focus on selling low-cost phones with decent specifications, as well as the hype that it created through its flash sales, helped it to obtain the top positionโ€ฆโ€ IDC said.
