Starting from July, 2015, DMs on Twitter will be able to cross the 140 character limit to 10, 000 characters.
Hallelujah?
Depending on you whom you ask, that’s either awesome or meh. But twitter has announced to its developers community ahead of the July launch that API updates will be necessary on third-party applications to accommodate the new development.
Sachin Agarwal, Twitter’s product manager for direct messages, told developers in a thread on the Twitter Developers forum that developer will need to “update GET requests to receive the full length of DM text and adjust app UI to accommodate longer DM text.”
This cut through the 140-character limit will, however, not occur in the public-facing tweets.
Longer DMs will launch in July, but developers are expected to test and deploy the changes API updates in advance. Twitter says it will include directions on how to test the changes and a more specific launch date in the coming weeks.
