Zimbabwean telecoms company and internet services provider Powertel, has revealed plans to connect 55 schools across Zimbabwe to its vast fibre network for free.
According to Technomag, the company’s Marketing Manager Mr Prosper Mutswiri announced that 55 schools had been identified and are going to be connected to the internet for free via its vast fibre network which boasts speeds of up to 1 Mbps.
“We have identified 55 schools in all the ten provinces across the nation and we have connected 20 schools so far,” Mutswiri said.
The schools were selected based on the proximity to Powertel’s infrastructure and the free connectivity package is for one year.
This move is a huge boost to Zimbabwe’s education sector and compliments government efforts to promote technology diffusion in the country through the provision of infrastructure and increased connectivity. Their goal is to plug every community into the grid, instigating the adoption of e-services in every sector of the economy, including education.
Powertel is a state-owned Internet Access Provider and subsidiary of power company, ZESA Holdings.
