Nigeria’s National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has approved the operating licence of RLG Communications Limited to enable it manufacture computers and other similar devices within the country.
Punch reports that, RLG applied for accreditation with the National Information Technology Development Agency in April 2014. The year long accreditation process had the NITDA inspect and test the facilities of the company.
RLG’s Regional Communications Director for West and Central Africa, Mr. Tosin Ilesanmi said that the certification of the company’s products will ensure that Nigeria is elevated from being a dump for sub-standard products.
It’s unclear how much of RLG’s production workflow will be local. Some equipment manufacturers who have attempted to build IT hardware in Africa have been known to produce hardware component in China and merely couple them in Africa.
The company declined to comment on question regarding production workflow.
