Twenty two year old Kenyan developer, Samson Amenia, has won the African Tech Challenge organised by AVIC International Holding Corporation in conjunction with Gearbox, iHub’s hardware incubator.
TechMoran reports that Samson, a student of the Egerton University, edged out competition from other student developers to clinch the $5000 cash prize. Dismus Kiplagat from Mount Kenya University and Mary Wangechi from the University of Eldoret came in at second and third place, scooping $2000 and $1000 respectively.
“We at AVIC are amazed at the great creativity and potential the young Kenyans have shown in this competition,” said Lynette Ndile, AVIC International’s Project Manager, “This shows that we are on the right path in encouraging young minds to create innovations that will create jobs and also enhance the spirit of entrepreneurship, not only in Kenya but also around the world.”
The participants had gone through a training process and had received mentorship during the course of the competition. The competition required that they build mobile applications on which young Kenyans can upload their ideas for the easy access by potential investors.
