GiftedMom, the Cameroonian startup that develops health solutions for pregnant women using an SMS platform is launching in Nigeria.
The launch is set to happen during the All Africa Business Leaders Awards 2015 organized by CNBC Africa.
The company will be launching a two-way communication system where registered users, pregnant women and new mothers, will receive weekly SMS reminder on their antenatal care sessions or baby vaccination.
To use the service, a pregnant woman, for example, can send ‘MOM’ followed by her health concern to 30812 and she will get an immediate response from a medical doctor.
According to the co-founder, Nteff Alain, “To scale our simple and effective solutions across Africa, we wish to start with West and Central Africa to compensate government efforts to ameliorate maternal and infant health,” says Nteff. “We will be launching in Nigeria on October 22nd, 2015 as it faces the same challenges in ameliorating maternal and infant health as Cameroon. A woman’s chance of dying in Nigeria during pregnancy and childbirth is 1 in 13 and every single day, Nigeria loses about 2,300 under-five-year olds and 145 women of childbearing age. This makes the country the second largest contributor to the under–five and maternal mortality rate in the world.”
