We first reported last year, that Apple would be taking out the 3.5mm headphone jack in its next major release, and making users buy their Lightning-powered headphones. Some Chinese phone manufacturer named LeEco (seriously, how many of them are there?) recently announced three phones, the Le 2, the Le Max2 and the Le 2Pro, and none of them feature a traditional headphone jack. Instead, they’ve put in a lone USB Type-C port.
The Le 2 will come with a 5.5-inch, 1080p display, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a Helio X20 CPU, 16MP/8MP rear and front shooters and a 3000 mAh juice pack. All that for around $170.
The Le 2Pro costs $230 and has the same specs with the Le 2, bar a Helio X25 processor, 4GB of RAM and a 21MP shooter from Sony. Whoa.
The Le Max2 deserves a WHOA. Don’t believe me? 21MP Sony shooter with optical image stabilisation, 5.7-inch QHD display, Snapdragon 820 processor, 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage say otherwise. LeEco have said it’s optimised for VR, as well.
But seriously, we need to sit down and have a chat with all these Android OEMs. Many of them will hardly sell enough phones to justify the trouble of ripping off everybody else. My guess is that these ones will try to serve the gargantuan Chinese market, and not venture anywhere else. It’s a global industry where one player inhales 94% of the profits while serving less than 15% of the market.
