Firefox has announced a partnership with MTN that will make the Firefox OS available in South Africa.

This development makes MTN the first mobile operator in Africa to support Mozilla’s Firefox OS. The web based OS will be available on the Alcatel OneTouch Fire E Smartphone through MTN.

The smartphone supports four official South African Languages, English, Afrikaans, Zulu or Xhosa, and will go for a retail price of $133.

Li Gong, President of Mozilla, says, “We are excited to see MTN launching the first Firefox OS devices in South Africa, enabling millions more people to access the mobile Web at an affordable cost.”

The Firefox OS was launched in 2012 in Spain and is currently available across five continents. The company also revealed that the OS will be launched in additional African markets this year.
