Johannesburg will become the first African city to host the Global Entrepreneurship Congress (GEC), after the event organizers granted the city’s hosting bid for the 2017 edition.
The bid was awarded at the opening of the 2015 GEC event in Milan with support from major bid partner, Sustainable Entrepreneur Accelerator (SEA) Africa, a research and development company.
Jonathan Ortmans, the president of Global Entrepreneurship Network, organizers of the Global Entrepreneurship Congress, say the conference will help shift global perceptions of Africa.
“The Global Entrepreneurship Network continues to expand its involvement in Africa in support of helping the next generation of entrepreneurs there to rebrand the continent and permanently shift perceptions,” Ortmans said.
The Global Entrepreneurship Congress is an annual meetup for business professionals and entrepreneurs from over 150 countries. The 2015 event held in Milan, Italy and the 2016 event is scheduled to hold in Medellin, Colombia.
