International enterprise software development firm, SAP will be hosting over a hundred workshops during the Africa Code Week holding across 17 African countries from the 1st to 10th of October, 2015.
The event is targeted at equipping 20,000 kids and youths within the ages 8 to 24 with coding skills. There are also programs set aside for teachers and technology enthusiasts willing to become trainers.
The kids and youths category will be split in three different age grades between 8-11, 12-17 and 18-24.
“ [The week-long event is designed] to empower future generations with the coding tools and skills they need to thrive in the 21st century workforce and become key actors of Africa’s economic development. [It also sets out] to encourage and support key actors of the tech scene dedicated to fostering e-skills and talents amongst African youth,” the organisers said.
Africa Code Week will run in Angola, Benin, Botswana, Cameroon, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, Seychelles, South Africa, Togo and Tunisia.
Although the venue for the event is not yet available, the organisers stated that the workshops will take place either in a school, university, science center or community center near participants.
In July, SAP Africa hosted a software coding pilot project for students of Ojodu Grammar School as part of the run-up to Africa Code Week.
