  • Propel launches Embedded Finance Infrastructure for Tech Talent Communities

    As part of its efforts to empower millions of tech professionals across Africa and solve last-mile problems faced by tech talent communities, Propel has announced the launch of its ‘Embedded Finance’ offering – the first service being a Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) feature that will provide tech talent with accessible financing options for essential work tools and resources.

    Africa’s economic landscape has been marked by rising inflation rates, currency depreciation and other macroeconomic hurdles. In countries like Kenya and Nigeria for example, high inflation and currency depreciation have significantly impacted the cost of living – and naturally this has made it increasingly difficult for people who are looking to build a career in tech to afford the tools necessary to grow or thrive in their careers.

    Recognizing the need to remove these financial barriers, Propel has launched its Buy Now, Pay Later solution as part of its broader ‘Embedded Finance’ framework for tech communities. 

    “In Africa 8 out of every 10 people looking to start their careers in tech start out by joining a community.” said Sunkanmi Ola, Co-founder and CEO of Propel. “These communities do incredible work in discovering, mentoring, training or upskilling talent.     Propel’s BNPL solution operates through a simple application process accessible via the Communities’ Dashboards. Upon approval, users receive a voucher code representing the approved loan amount, which can be redeemed with verified vendors for the purchase of work devices – computers, tablets etc. The program’s structure and flexible repayment schedules aim to ease the financial burden on tech talent while promoting inclusivity and accessibility within the industry.

    “With our embedded finance infrastructure, we’d effectively be able to turn Tech Communities into ‘neo-banks’ for their members…” Seun said. “And the Buy Now, Pay Later is just one tool in a roadmap of critical infrastructure we’re building for the tech talent ecosystem.”

    Propel’s infrastructure is currently used by 200+ communities spread across 22 African countries, some highlights including SheCodeAfrica, GoMyCode, Ingressive For Good, Friends of Figma and various Google Developer Groups. They started out with their “Access to Work” feature – helping connect talent within these communities with jobs. And so far they’ve matched over 2,000 people with jobs at global companies like Porsche, Farfetch, Mercedes, Orange and Stepstone.

  • Empowering Communities: Medplus Cares Foundation Launches Outreach Initiatives in Sogunro in Partnership with Jemima Osunde and Slum2School

     

    Nothing says Valentines more than a special act of love to those around us.  In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, Medplus took the initiative to show love to the children of Slum2School and the Sogunro community through its foundation, Medplus Cares Foundation. After last year’s impactful with Chess In Slum.

    In a commitment to foster love, hope, positive change and community development, Medplus Cares Foundation announced the launch of the “Love in the Slums” outreach in conjunction with Slum2School in the vibrant Sogunro community. 

    Slum2School is a volunteer-driven development organization that aims to transform the society by empowering underserved children in slums and remote communities with quality education, entrepreneurial skills, and psychosocial support to enable them to realize their full potential and become social reformers. Slum2School started a revolutionary project to help the children in the slums of Nigeria gain access to education as a way to impact their lives, and transform them into social contributors to the nation. 

    The Sogunro outreach initiative is a comprehensive effort by the Medplus Cares Foundation and Slum2School to address key communities in need and provide medical aids to empower its residents. This program includes providing the children with School supplies, testing them for illnesses or ailments, free medical checkups for the children and free distribution of medicines.

    On Friday 16th February Medplus Cares Foundation and Slum2School visited the Sogunro community. This day marked the beginning of a transformative journey, as they worked together to bring healthcare, education and hope to the heart of Sogunro.

    Ms Joke Bakare MD Medplus mentioned ‘’We are so grateful for this partnership with Slum2School and to be able to help the Sogunro community. We hope to continue fostering positive connections with like minded organizations, and keep showing love to the communities around us.’’

  • Sterling Bank CEO advocates for AI dev’t to maintain global competitiveness

    Lagos, Nigeria, February 27, 2024: Managing Director and CEO of Sterling Bank Limited, Mr. Abubakar Suleiman has said it is critical for the government and corporate bodies to pay attention to the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to remain competitive in the emerging global economy.

    In a keynote address at the just concluded Innovate AI Conference in Lagos themed “Adapting AI For Nigeria, Crafting Intelligent Solutions for Our Unique Landscape,” Suleiman warned that neglecting AI could jeopardize efforts aimed at enhancing business efficiency and national competitiveness. He said countries and companies failing to embrace AI risk falling behind, as AI-driven technologies offer the potential for significantly higher productivity.

    He said, “If we fail to pay attention to artificial intelligence, all our efforts at ease of doing business, national competitiveness will come to nought because those who deploy technology on this scale will be able to deliver higher productivity than we do. And for those of us in the private sector, the same way the country will become less competitive is the same way in which companies that fail to embrace AI will become less competitive and they will die.”

    Highlighting the transformative power of AI, Suleiman underscored the need for nations to formulate sovereign AI strategies and foster ecosystems conducive to AI investment. He cautioned against the concentration of AI-driven wealth and power, advocating for intentional efforts to ensure equitable distribution and stability in the future.

    He said, “Countries that do not have a sovereign strategy around AI, those that do not have the ecosystem that attract investment in AI, those that do not provide the roadmap for people to develop this technology stand the risk of being carried away.

    “If we do not domesticate this tool there is a high risk that while this technology has so much capability to enhance the capability of those who invested in it, those capabilities will be more powerful in reducing global inequality, improving global healthcare and giving access to higher quality education.

    “It is true each time there is a major technological breakthrough, there is a shift in wealth and power. Some nations will become more powerful and richer and in most cases, when this power or wealth is concentrated in a few countries it leads to a shift in geo-politics.”

    He pondered about what level of control can society exercise over AI and the wealth that comes out of AI. What level of fairness can be guaranteed because the richer the world, the less equitable and unstable the world will eventually become.

    There is no way the amount of wealth concentration that is inevitable on account of the changes we are seeing if we are not intentional about re-balancing it, we will face a future that will be less stable for everyone.

    Addressing common concerns about AI’s impact on employment, Suleiman urged a shift in perspective, viewing AI not just as a threat to jobs but as a catalyst for innovation and new opportunities. He stressed the potential of AI to reshape human intelligence and questioned the future dynamics between humans and machines in light of AI’s pervasive influence on society.

    He asked if the current form of human intelligence will become different simply because everyone now has access to certain level of know-how that will determine their ability to have insight to implement and get outcome that is no longer the same based on the same set of skills that they now have but something else.

    Suleiman challenged society to envision a future where access to AI alters traditional notions of intelligence and fundamentally transforms human capabilities. He said, for instance, “There was a time in history that your ability to write and how well you could write was considered as a form of intelligence and it affects how society relates with man.”

    The team also states that the average liquidity supply time typically spans from a day to two, making it difficult for financial solutions to mitigate exchange volatility losses and take advantage of their exchange rate gains. However, Feedxpay’s solution reduces this time to as little as 10 minutes to 1 hour, making it easier for them to provide solutions for their customers.

    Feedxpay makes revenue by charging transaction fees on corporate virtual accounts created and exchange rates on each currency conversion made.

    Feedxpay’s rapid entry into the $1.5 trillion cross-border market has not been without its challenges. According to Faruk, Feedxpay has struggled to find talent to build its solution. “Operators with localized domain knowledge are scarce,” he said.

    While Feedxpay’s plans are ambitious, the startup operates in a field rocked by regulatory and compliance issues, costing businesses potential shutdowns if they operate on the wrong side of the law. With well-regulated partners, Feedxpay ensures it always stays compliant.

    While in the past, some other cross-border startups have closed due to lack of funding, such as Zazuu, Dash, among others, Faruk claims, “The success of a startup is not directly proportional to the amount of money it raises.”

    Looking ahead, the Feedxpay team says it will expand its ambitions beyond just making international payments and liquidity supply in Africa to other emerging markets, and also provide corporate virtual accounts and wallets to businesses, allowing them to convert over 50 currencies and make payments all on one platform.”

  • TWIN BTC: OVERVIEW OF THE CHALLENGES ICP’s CKBTC HAS REVOLUTIONIZED

    Blockchain technology has made and is still making a name for itself as an innovative development that is reshaping several industries around the globe. However, numerous challenges hinder its wider adoption and efficient operation, we could look at what happened to Cross-chain bridges and DeFi in the year 2022.   • She Code Africa Secures FedEx Grant to Train 100 African Women in Tech

    Grant to provide opportunities for skill development, career advancement and help bridge gender gap in STEM

    She Code Africa has received funding from FedEx, one of the world’s largest express transportation companies, to help 100 African women kickstart their careers in the tech industry. This support includes teaching participants tech skills, guiding their career paths, providing resources, and offering internship opportunities.

    In an impactful initiative and exciting partnership with FedEx, She Code Africa (SCA) is set to launch Cohort 1 of its highly anticipated She Code Africa Academy Program. Designed as a 12-week intensive learning  to run from April to June 2024, this program aims to empower 100 African women between the ages of 18 and 45 in Software Engineering, Product Design, and Product Management.  Applications are now open for its first cohort.

    She Code Africa is a non-profit organisation targeted at training, empowering, and celebrating African women in tech. The organisation has a track record of impact-driven programs and has partnered with FedEx to bring this one to life. 

    She Code Africa’s initiatives have empowered over 64,040 girls and women through various activities and events, provided free training to over 7,000 individuals through academy training and scholarship programs, and engaged a community of over 40,000 members across 20 African countries.
