On Tuesday, Access Bank unveiled the 5.0 version of Paywithcapture at an exclusive launch at the Civic Center, Lagos. Uti Nwachukwu, Illrymz, Gbemileke Oscar Oyinsan and Akah Nnani were a few of the notable personalities present at the exclusive gathering. Guests also included a selected group of young techies, myself included, who were treated with invites to a mystery event.
Paywithcapture has come a long way since its first version’s launch in 2015.
Its initial unique selling point was the contactless payment feature. This enabled users to simply scan a QR code with their phone cameras at a merchant’s point of sale.
With the newly innovated app comes the provision of various mobile payment channels and mobile banking functionalities across the spectrum. The highlight is undoubtedly the card linkage feature, which allows users engage with countless bank cards, all from one device. Users can also spread a payment across multiple cards, and work offline due to the encrypted background USSD and SMS technologies.
Its social banking feature is also guaranteed to be a hit. This supports the instant opening of bank accounts from personal Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Guests at Nigerian hotels can look forward to the end of an era of awkward check-in situations, when hotel’s records are not properly updated with their online bookings. This recurrent problem arises when rooms listed by hotels for sale on other travel agency sites are not seamlessly connected to the hotel’s front desk. As hotels are increasingly adopting new channels to sell rooms, the challenge of keeping available room and price information updated across all sales channels became even more complex.
This problem will be eliminated for users of online hotel booking sites that partner with MoBiashara for Hotels, a hotel management solution from SlimTrader. MoBiashara for hotels, also known as MFH provides a ‘Channel Manager’ that connects hotels to multiple room selling platforms, and seamlessly reconciles bookings across all distribution platforms with the records at the hotel front desk. In recognition of the benefits of MFH, Nigeria’s leading hotel deals site, Hotelnownow.com is building on its advanced platform to improve overall guest experience and room sales with better control, reconciliation and more visibility.
MFH is an easy-to-use and affordable technology solution that generates more sales for hotels by providing visibility on leading local and international online hotel online booking sites such as Hotelnownow.com, Expedia, Booking.com, TripAdvisor and Arik Air. MFH allows hotels to receive physical or online payments in either local or international currencies. With MFH, hotels can easily reconcile their room inventory and all payments made to the hotel. The solution also allows hotels to easily make last minute adjustments to their room prices and to offer specialized deals and promotions to the public.
SlimTrader developed MFH specifically for hotels in sub-Saharan Africa. It is the most affordable, easy to use hotel management software in the market today, available from only $30 per month,” said SlimTrader’s General Manager Mr. Magaji Buba.
”According to the Vice President of Operations for hotelnownow.com, Mr. Seun Ojo, “We are pleased to enter partnerships that will enable us provide better service to our customers. Our platform allows hotels to provide discounts for hotel rooms and bookings at any time; this will set our partner hotels apart. The flexibility is particularly useful for hotels that need to boost low occupancy by offering last minute deals.”
In addition to the business benefits that hotels will enjoy from this partnership, hotel guests will also be saved from inconvenient delays created when hotels try to quickly reconcile bookings across multiple platforms at the time of checking-in.
Tourism in Africa continues to see increasing interest from both local and international travelers. According to a 2015 Global Hospitality Insights report by Ernst and Young, “the development pipeline continues to grow and now includes 637 hotels, with 151,205 rooms, an increase of 139 hotels since December 2013. 15 Countries such as Nigeria, South Africa and Egypt have experienced continued economic growth [1]. The Ernst and Young report went on to say, “From an ownership standpoint, new technology has also impacted how guests are acquired in the discovery and booking phases, as travelers are increasingly looking online to book hotel rooms and customer acquisition costs continue to rise.”
SlimTrader and hotelnownow.com are jointly positioning themselves to back this growth anticipated in the hospitality industry.

As over 10,000 participants and notable technology thought leaders converge in Lagos for Techplus 2016, Chairperson of Alliance for Affordable Internet Dr. Omobola Johnson and other tech experts have highlighted Nigeria’s key role in Africa’s highly anticipated technology revolution.
Giving her opening remark at Africa’s biggest technology conference, Dr. Omobola Johnson, stated that developments in technology are fundamentally altering the way people live, connect, communicate and transact. These developments, in her view, have had profound effects on economic development in Nigeria and Africa at large. According to her, to promote tech advancement, developing countries should invest in quality education for youth, continuous skills training for workers and managers for all stakeholders to understand the importance of the continuous revolution.
Dr. Omobola Johnson has stressed that the continent of Africa needs bold actions from all quarters if the challenges of internet connectivity must be tackled effectively. She made these assertions while delivering her speech last Friday at the opening ceremony of Techplus 2016 held at Eko Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.
According to her, “Across our continent, just 1 in 5 people is online today. What’s more, growth is slowing and recent statistics from the NCC have shown that over the past year, Internet use in Africa grew by just 1.8%. At this rate, it will take decades for Africa to reach the Internet usage levels currently seen in Europe. A recent report by the Alliance for Affordable Internet shows that at current trends, we won’t achieve universal internet access until the year 2042 — over 20 years beyond the target date set by the UN”.
She also added that technology has now become a key driver to development, because technological revolutions underpin economic advances, improvements in business, health systems, education and infrastructure. Her words, “The technological revolutions of the 21st century are emerging from entirely new sectors, based on microprocessors, telecommunications, biotechnology and nanotechnology. Products are transforming business practices across the economy, as well as the lives of all who have access to their effects. The most remarkable breakthroughs will come from the interaction of insights and applications arising when these technologies converge”.
Also speaking at the event, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Job Creation/Youth Employment, Mr. Afolabi Imoukhuede who represented the Vice President, noted that access and application of technology has become quite critical in today’s society. He stressed that service and technology are the differentiators between countries that are able to tackle poverty effectively by growing and developing their economies, and those that can’t.
He said, the extent to which developing economies emerge as economic powerhouses depends on their ability to grasp and apply insights from science and technology and use them creatively.
“Innovation is the primary driver of technological growth and drives higher living standards. As an engine of growth, the potential of technology is endless.
Mr. Afolabi disclosed further, Technology is a major leapfrogging element to economic diversification; hence the federal government has developed a blueprint to key into the smart city initiative of Lagos State and come up with other initiatives to promote technology appreciation and adoption to an appreciable level with the multiplier effect on the economy.
Chief Enterprise Business Officer, MTN Nigeria, Linda Saint-Nwafor who represented the Managing Director, highlighted the importance of the Techplus conference to technology promotion and adoption in Nigeria’s ecosystem. Saying, it’s a gathering to debate, interact and share ideas that will benefit everyone.
As a technology company, we are always at the forefront of promoting any idea that supports technology discussion and its merits to business at all level, she said.
Mr. Tunji Adeyinka, Managing Director of Connect Marketing – organizers of the conference – added that, Techplus has come at the right time to tap into the buzz surrounding technology in the country. His words; “We see our platform as a catalyst which will bring together the entire ecosystem. When we started we were looking to create a platform that would allow companies, individuals and businesses in the tech space to bring together customers, clients and for all players to showcase their products and services. Before now, we had lots of talk shops, but this event is meant to be a practical opportunity to talk about technology and feel the impact that technology has on different facets of life both from a business perspective and from a consumer perspective.”
The theme for this year’s event is ‘A Connected World’. This could not have come at a more auspicious time as Cisco had predicted there will be 20.8 billion connected devices by 2020. Techplus seeks to highlight the increasing connecting nature of the world and identify Nigeria’s role in this new global reality through a variety of different ‘tracks’ from government’s increasing commitment to the development of the ICT sector, to the rapid emergence of innovation hubs and incubators across the country, it is clear that technology is on the brink of revolutionizing the country and Techplus is gravitating towards becoming a key part of this dialogue.

Chris Chelliah, Group Vice President and Chief Architect, Core Technology and Cloud, Oracle Asia Pacific @chrischelliah
Businesses looking at cloud computing in Asia Pacific are concerned about where their data is stored, but do they need to be?
In my conversations with customers across Asia Pacific one thing is clear: they all want (and usually need) to adopt the flexibility and benefits of the cloud. Industry statistics agree: a recent Frost & Sullivan report found that 59 per cent of decision-makers in the region cite cloud computing as their main short-term priority. CIOs in APAC are being pressured by their business to move as quickly as possible to these flexible, cost-effective infrastructures. However, as with any new journey, there are obstacles — perceived or real — that arise, that can be circumnavigated by a mixture of making the right choices and dispelling some common myths.
Often when talking cloud, one of the first questions on the table is around the physical location of data centers. This isn’t surprising because data sovereignty can be a crucial factor in many countries, both in Asia Pacific and elsewhere. In Indonesia, for example, regulations stipulate that financial data cannot be stored outside the country without prior approval. In Singapore, meanwhile, any company sending data outside the country must take measures to ensure the owner of the overseas data center is compliant with Singaporean data protection laws. It’s worth noting that even there, things are changing around data sovereignty. The new Trans Pacific Partnership, for example, negates countries from mandating data sovereignty provisions.
There are clearly regulations; and they must be adhered to, but often these issues are a smokescreen for the organization. This is emphasized by the fact that even in those industries that tend to be most impacted by regulation – the public sector, telco and financial services – many organizations are already benefiting from the cloud in some way; for non-critical application or around test and development.
In fact, for the most progressive organisations I talk to, other than for data that by law has to reside in a particular location, those CIOs who are actively embracing cloud don’t actually care where it is housed. That’s the beauty of cloud for these businesses: where it’s run or what underpins it is far less important than the fact that it supports their processes and enables them to be more responsive or operate cost effectively.
That said, for those that are at the start of embarking on their journey, there are various options to consider.
There are sets of workloads or applications that make sense to run on-prem and on-prem only — whether that’s governed by regulatory or data sovereignty or your own policies. So businesses should work out what they are – but be prepared to review that on a regular basis. Not long ago, ERP was one of those mission critical apps that no one could envisage in the cloud. Now it is one of Oracle’s fastest growing product areas.
There are also workloads that make sense to potentially run in a managed service, where businesses still get the benefits of cloud, but are still using an environment that gives them more control. There are adjacent workloads that run in the public cloud. In addition, we believe that for the next 10 years or so, many of these workloads may move back and forth, depending on whether they are in test and dev or production.
Businesses therefore should look for a platform that enables seamless portability to the environment that makes best sense: private cloud, public cloud or on enterprise-owned systems. A powerful way of enabling this is to physically bring the public cloud back to the customer premise – meaning data, workloads and applications can be easily moved between on-premise and on-cloud. Oracle’s Public Cloud Machine is a good example of this approach.
The location issue is important, but not all encompassing. Delaying or dismissing cloud adoption just because of this would leave an organization behind its competitors. It is more mindset than regulation. This new freedom brings exciting times.
So what else could be holding companies back? In my next blog I look at the myth and reality surrounding cyber security, and show that in our opinion, the safest place to have your data is the cloud!
Dain Hansen, Director, Cloud Platform GTM, Product Business Group @Dainsworld
Musical instruments sound great on their own, but they’re even better when played together: the same applies to cloud services
For many years, cloud adoption was presented as a series of choices. These included such decisions as whether to adopt public or private cloud; or to ignore both and to stick with on-premise enterprise IT systems. Businesses also had to get to grips with a wide variety of services – starting with Software as a Service (SaaS) and then moving swiftly on to Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS). This raised further questions: which of these services would benefit them the most? Which should they invest in immediately and for which could they afford to wait?
With the coming of age of cloud computing, it is now clear that while key decisions still need to be made, making the right choices for the business has never been easier. This is because it is now clear that the future for enterprise IT doesn’t lie in the implementation of one or two cloud services (no matter how strategic) so much as in a holistic adoption of the cloud in all its forms. This is because the value of cloud services and infrastructure increases exponentially when delivered as an orchestrated whole.
In the same way the sound of a lone saxophonist is in no way comparable to the power of a full orchestra; likewise, businesses that have a holistic cloud strategy are in a different league to those that run isolated elements of the cloud. While the latter might enjoy productivity and costs benefits in the short term, the former stand to deliver far greater benefits from the complete transformation of their businesses.
Let’s be clear: when I talk about a ‘holistic’ cloud strategy, I’m not – yet – talking about 100 percent cloud-based IT systems. Such systems are at least a decade away, and in the meantime there will be a period where cloud infrastructures will co-exist with infrastructure on-premises. This approach makes complete sense, as businesses have invested too much in their existing systems to do away with them altogether. Instead, companies should be looking to marry the resources and technology they have in place with their cloud and hybrid equivalents.
This approach to the cloud will interest any organization serious about being a contender in the digital age, because it allows them to combine the best of their public and private clouds with resources on-premises. But for such a system to work there needs to be a glue to bind the various elements together. Without a means to integrate public, private and on-premises applications, middleware and infrastructure, and to enrich each with data taken from across the enterprise, the cloud will not live up to its potential.
This is why choosing the right Platform as a Service (PaaS) solution is so important. PaaS is the conductor of our orchestra: it ensures that all elements of the cloud environment work in concert and are perfectly tuned to harmonize.
The best PaaS systems, for instance, enable integration between the various cloud services (such as SaaS and IaaS solutions). This allows businesses to virtualize processes, such as web application development, while still having access to the same standards and tools they are used to from their on-premises environments. Modern PaaS offerings also enable businesses to shift workloads between the public and private cloud, as well as on-premise, and hybrid environments, allowing them to easily migrate on-premise applications to the cloud and back as needed.
But PaaS has a far greater role to play in enabling the holistic cloud than just acting as a bridge between the cloud and on-premise worlds; it’s also an important means of ensuring cloud services deliver all they’re capable of. For example, an organization might find that its off-the-shelf SaaS applications don’t fully meet its business requirements; at least not in the way its ‘old-world’ and (most-likely) highly-customized enterprise application did. In fact, it is often these customizations that are attributed to delivering competitive differentiation. In this case, businesses can use application development cloud services (database and middleware) to develop and deploy custom code, or complete application extensions that broaden and customize the functionality of their SaaS applications and tailor them to their needs.
Businesses can also extend SaaS applications with platform services to provide additional capabilities such as document sharing or analytics. A good PaaS environment will enable this and bypass the pitfalls that traditionally plighted app customisation, such as complicating the update process.
Many businesses today are in a fight for survival. They’re facing more demanding customers, and new digitally-enabled competitors and business models. It’s time for businesses to get serious about the cloud, and this means replacing ad-hoc implementations with a fully orchestrated cloud platform. It’s only through such a platform that businesses will be able to transform, compete and win.

Rapid trial and error holds the key to digital transformation
There was a time that all failure was unacceptable to businesses. However, today the digital world means that conservative ways of doing business are increasingly being rethought. Now, not only is failure accepted it is seen as part and parcel of what it means to be a successful digital entrepreneur or web scale business: it simply goes with the territory.
The only caveats are that failure must be fast, and the lessons of failure learned even faster. Businesses must recognize a simple rule: that some applications will be hugely disruptive and others won’t. Some will require rapid and massive scale; others will need to be discarded ruthlessly if they prove unpopular. Fast failure in essence allows businesses to take a shotgun approach to digital innovation; developing every creative idea they have into an application and then releasing them into the market to see which ones work. When only one success out of ten has the potential to transform, or as some like to say ‘disrupt’ entire industries, this is a highly rewarding success rate.
Of course, the fail fast approach is as much a consequence of digital transformation as it is a driver for it. After all, failure is only acceptable in a world where application development is agile, cost-effective and scalable. As such, it is an innovation discipline that is inseparable from the cloud.
The pre-cloud glacial pace of enterprise IT, which still predominates in the majority of businesses today, means that a trial and error approach to application development is simply not possible. The costs associated with development are prohibitively high and line of business managers need to ask the IT department to do the majority of the heavy lifting in terms of toolset development and integration.
By the time IT had scheduled and procured the human and infrastructure resources required to build or customize an application, momentum is lost and, more importantly, costs rack up. In these instances failure is not an option: too much time and money would have been spent on the project. It is little wonder that such business would rather fully market test an application before letting development resources anywhere near it: they needed to have a good idea whether the application would succeed or not.
Thanks to the cloud – particularly cloud-based Platform as a Service (PaaS) solutions – businesses now have the agility they need for fail fast innovation. Instead of market testing an application they can simply take the resources they need as a service from the cloud, paying only for what they need, and using pre-existing development tools to bring their ideas to life. This can be done without the costs and risks associated with traditional IT projects, and the platform can co-exist with the existing infrastructure that serves the day-to-day running of the business.
Take the example of Calix, an Oracle customer. As with any technology company Calix is in a continual innovation cycle and the IT team is tasked with driving this innovation. Using the Oracle Integration Cloud Service, Calix was able to seamlessly integrate its heterogeneous systems in an accelerated time frame, using a single platform. All existing and new integrations now go through the Oracle Cloud, and Calix can now deploy new applications in just 6-8 weeks.
PaaS enables new applications to be cost effectively built and launched within days or weeks, and it enables application development to be integrated into all parts of the business as a day-to-day task, where business units themselves can take on some of the development functions that have traditionally been the preserve of the IT team.
Modern PaaS also enables businesses to shift workloads between public and private cloud, on-premises, and hybrid deployments, allowing them to easily migrate on-premises applications to the cloud (and back). So, if a business wants to rapidly evaluate an application it can do so in the cloud, using pre-existing toolsets to build the application and test it using cloud resources. If successful, the business can then easily scale up, either by buying more capacity from cloud providers or moving the application to their on-premises or private cloud resources if preferred.
A fail fast approach will continue to drive innovation in the digital space, helping businesses rapidly create and launch applications with the power to change our world. To embrace fast failure however, businesses must be truly agile and increasingly that means one thing: moving application development to the cloud.

PaaS is not just some esoteric, ‘techie’ subject – it’s going to change the world
Type ‘Platform as a Service’ into Google and you’re met with a long list of technical explanations describing the technology and how it works – most of which are fairly dry, largely uninspiring and surprisingly unenlightening.
This is symptomatic of a wider problem with the way Platform as a Service – or PaaS – is often discussed: there’s too much debate about what it is rather than what it does.
Of course that isn’t a problem if you, like me, get a kick from technology, but it’s doing PaaS a major disservice. Once you take a step back from the IT side and focus on the business benefits PaaS actually delivers, it quickly becomes apparent that it’s one of the most exciting developments in the cloud.
This is because PaaS holds the key to digital transformation. It’s the underlying technology that allows businesses to rapidly build and customize innovative web applications so they can revolutionize the way they work internally and deliver innovative new services to their customers.
Let’s look at some of the – frankly amazing – things it can bring about for business:
1. Insurance giant AIG is currently exploring how drones can be used to improve its service. It’s testing whether drones can be used during natural disasters to record footage that can then be used to settle claims faster. This is a great example of the sort of highly-innovative, experimental application development and testing that PaaS can enable.
2. In agriculture, America’s Monsanto is looking beyond its chemicals expertise and moving into computing. The company is driving innovation with technologies that gather and process information relevant to farmers, like sensor arrays that enable each and every corn kernel to be planted at the perfect depth and in the most fertile part of a field. This is exactly the sort of transformational innovation that can be enabled by PaaS.
3. Meanwhile, PaaS is helping organizations in the healthcare industry develop a wide range of applications to help people stay healthy. Take National Pharmacies in Australia, which has developed an app to help patients better manage prescriptions, alerting them automatically when a prescription needs to be picked up and providing a record of past transactions.
These three use cases have one thing in common: innovation. PaaS is the perfect driver for innovation within businesses, as it gives businesses the agility they need for rapid web development. Rather than market-testing a new application – whether that is insurance drones or healthcare apps – businesses can now take the resources they need as a service from the cloud. They pay only for what they require, and can use pre-existing development tools to realize their ideas. This can be done without the costs and risks associated with traditional IT projects, and the platform can co-exist with the existing infrastructure that serves the day-to-day running of the business. So powerful is PaaS in driving innovation, that at last year’s Oracle OpenWorld we predicted that by 2025 all application development and testing will move to the cloud.
With the potential to have such a large impact on how businesses approach IT, PaaS is certainly the future for any company that is serious about innovating and winning market share – and that makes it an exciting technology indeed.
I’ve now shown you some of the things PaaS can do, but I imagine many people still want a deeper dive on how it actually helps businesses achieve these things. If that’s the case, feel free to download our PaaS guide.

The 2nd Huawei Cloud Congress West Africa (HCC Nigeria 2016) summit opened yesterday at the Oriental Hotel in Lagos, with the theme of ‘Transforming with Cloud, Setting New Benchmark’.
More than 300 industry bigwigs, ranging from telecom carriers, finance, governments, to energy companies and partners across West Africa. Huawei used this summit to share its vision and ideas about the future, strategies on how to work together with various industries in order to advance ICT, and showcase its experiences in IT.
Huawei shares IT trend and experience: IT Transformation Strategy
In this digital era, user demands a ROADS experience: Real-time, On-demand, All-online, DIY, and Social. To adapt effectively, telecoms carriers and big business must change their business models, improve O&M, build ecosystems, add new infrastructure, develop organizations and processes, and learn new skills.
Michael Lian from @HuaweiWa IT Product Line: User experiences must be ROADS: Real-time, On-demand, All-online, DIY and Social.
Traditional industries find themselves under increasing pressure to transform and upgrade. IT has shifted from being a support system to a business and production system. The emergence of technologies represented by cloud computing is driving the need to change and reshape IT.
In addition, the rise of Big Data is spawning additional cloud computing-based IT initiatives. IDC forecasts that cloud computing will be one of 2016’s IT megatrends. IT will shift from being a support service to a core production platform, as operators revitalize their closed, low-efficiency networks and shorten time-to-market (TTM).
Open, agile, cloud-based networks will give them the power to seize fast-moving market opportunities (e.g., digital and cloud services).
As an IT industry leader, Huawei concentrates on IT infrastructure, and continues to openly invest in and work with partners to provide innovative, differentiated, and leading IT solutions for customers worldwide.

Traditional industries need to transform and upgrade themselves: IT is becoming the engine by which traditional industries are transforming and upgrading. Informatization (increased IT usage) is the latest revolution, following the previous three revolutions – mechanization, electrification, and automation. Innovative technologies such as Industry 4.0 connect everything, and Big Data analytics can be increasingly applied to industrial processes. This phenomenon drives traditional industries to transform, and redefines business models. As such, each enterprise across every industry is taking up a new starting place. The enterprise IT system is not just a support system, but is becoming a business and production system. Each enterprise is expected to fully leverage their IT system to enhance competitiveness, accelerate product Go-to-Market (GTM), increase operational efficiency, and reduce costs.
The rise of cloud computing drives the need to reshape IT: IT technologies represented by cloud computing bring about new changes and lay the groundwork for the digital restructure initiatives of traditional enterprises and IT staff. Cloud computing assists enterprises and industry players alike (including telecom carriers) to rebuild their IT framework to become future-proof, so they can evolve network architectures, revamp business models, and become increasingly competitive. Huawei firmly believes that cloud computing is an important opportunity within the IT sector that should be seized. The emergence of cloud computing is a key factor behind Huawei’s massive investment in IT.
Big Data creates unlimited opportunities for business innovation: Data is increasingly becoming a core asset that is critical to an organization’s IT initiatives. By fully leveraging data, companies are able to intelligently deliver transformations and innovations, as well as the ability to efficiently implement precision marketing. Data also aids enterprises with customer satisfaction survey, helps improve customer satisfaction, and increases operational efficiency. To fully capitalize on the value of “digital asset” – data, enterprises need a Big Data-capable platform. Huawei helps customers unleash the full potential of data by building a feature-rich Big Data platform that offers a variety of services, such as complete and real-time analytics.
New products and solutions
Cloud is the future of business. Hardware innovation, software re-architecture, and data intelligence have become the three most important factors of business success.
Huawei shared innovative products and solutions, not only include architecture, but also hardware (High-end Server, High-end Storage, Hyper-Converged Infrastructure and Spark-based Accelerator), software (Enterprise-class open cloud OS FusionSphere) and solution (Heterogeneous Virtualization Resource Pool, Hybrid Cloud Solution, and Cloud Disaster Recovery Solution) at the event.
"We need to begin to move away from physical data centers, towards virtual data centers" #HCCNigeria2016
Huawei also released its hyper-converged infrastructure FusionCube 6000 for virtualization and desktop clouds. FusionCube delivers high performance with low latency, and deploys rapidly. FusionCube 6000 uses a Huawei-designed, built-in, distributed storage engine. It deeply integrates computing and storage resources, eliminating performance bottlenecks and supporting flexible capacity expansion.
Build an open, collaborative, and Win-win cloud ecosystem
By depending on joint innovation, technology innovation and cooperation innovation, Huawei has devoted itself to build an open, collaborative, and Win-win cloud ecosystem together with customers, and partners. Huawei also looks to strengthen cooperative relationships with its customers, and seek greater marketing opportunities. Thus, Huawei launched its partner promotion product and policy to encourage partner’s aggressiveness at this summit.
Huawei drove the conversation at the event by engaging with industry leaders and IT vendors on promoting more open, more efficient, and more structured business growth for enterprise and carrier.

“…and from today, what was Fleet technologies will now be known as Vatebra Limited.”
What’s in a name?
“It plays a monumental role in a brand’s growth and perception, meaning it can completely make or break a company. For every company whose name becomes an entrepreneurial landmark – Apple, Uber, Google, etc. – there are countless whose names don’t properly reflect the brand, and the company suffers because of it.” – Adam Fridman, Inc.com
Couldn’t have put it better myself. But MD/CEO, Kunle Akinniran did last night, when he unveiled the new brand identity of what we knew as Fleet Technologies, now known as Vatebra Limited.
He told the story of Fleet Technologies’ development over the past 13 years, from building e-government software solutions, to online result checkers, identity management, biometrics and e-payment solutions.
"Fleet technologies has been a foremost provider of ICT solutions across Africa in the public/private sect" – MD/CEO pic.twitter.com/1PzaanM7OE
Now, naming a child is no easy task. Naming a business, no less. You’re fighting against years of goodwill, and familiarity, and inertia, and plunging into the great unknown. It can be a struggle to find a word or group of words that tells your brand’s story, sounds pleasing to your customers’ ears, gives insight into your position in the industry and remains relevant for a long time.
Fleet technologies searched for a while to find a new name that defined both their position right now, & where they needed to be. #BeyondNow
According to Mr. Kunle Akinniran, after the management at Fleet Technologies tried out different names in Yoruba, Latin, Greek, and a flurry of other languages, they arrived at…Vatebra.
The second he uttered the words, in the midst of an electric atmosphere, I made a mental connection. It turns out I was right: Vatebra was derived from ‘vertebra’. It refers to the series of small bones forming the backbone in a body – in a sense, the body’s support system. And when you think about it, it does make sense. Each of the products the development team at Vatebra has built, is an integral part – a solid foundation, if you will – of the lives of the governments and private institutions that use them.
Beyond Now
You don’t need a prophet to tell you that Nigeria’s little honeymoon with crude oil is finally over. Thank goodness. Even with a miracle, a barrel of oil is unlikely to ever cost much more than $40 again. Looks especially scary when you consider that Saudi Arabia has set up a ginormous sovereign wealth fund in preparation for a post-oil era. Consider we can now all safely agree that electric cars are in fact the future. And we’re here sitting on our hands, waiting for oil prices to make like Lazarus and rise again.
Before the big unveil, (former) Fleet Technologies invited Dr. Doyin Salami to deliver a lecture titled Beyond Now: Nigeria without Oil. He’s a rockstar in the business/economy space in Nigeria, and after reading his credentials and listening to him speak, it’s not hard to see why.
Dr. Salami is an associate professor at Lagos Business School, been a Principal Consultant for USAID, EFID, World Bank, the Nigerian Federal Government and holds a doctorate from Queen Mary College, London.
Dr. Doyin Salami
A few things to note from his lecture. Oil production makes up only 9-12% of Nigeria’s economy (surprising, I know). Nigeria is an oil-exporting economy and is in reality, not driven by oil. The problem is, 72% of government revenue comes from oil. Think that’s bad? Think again. 96% of all our forex earnings come from selling Crude Oil to other countries. So, even though our output is mostly non-oil, our ability to trade with other countries is firmly bound to Oil.
So, it’s not hard to see why everyone’s losing their shit that oil prices have tanked. If Nigeria will survive the coming years (possibly even thrive), we need to move on from the blessing (or curse, depending on your point-of-view) of oil. Dr. Doyin thinks technology is the next logical step and I’m inclined to agree.
In 2000, ICT made up around 0.25% of Nigeria’s economy base. Now? It’s swollen to around 10%. I’ve made a small chart to illustrate my point.
Translation: technology is the fastest growing facet of the Nigerian economy. This is interesting because when technology is applied and democratised, it disappears.
So, the big question here is, if we can agree that Nigeria’s future is bound to technology, are we prepared/wired for technology? Is there a foundation, over which we can build products or services to export and earn forex? or at least, reduce our insatiable demand for it?
We created 1.9 million new jobs in 2015, and received 3.2 million graduates into the labour market. That is, added 3.2 million to the massive, growing backlog of unemployed Nigerians. Considering context makes it even worse. 80% of those 1.9 million jobs were earned in informal (read: low-wage, unsustainable) sectors. How fit-for-purpose are the graduands we keep churning out year after year?
If you look at things in this way, you’ll realise that if we don’t fit the bottom of the pyramid – education, infrastructure et al – then we cannot glean from technology even if it becomes available to us. For example, APC promised to cater to the needs of the poorest Nigerians (even though they swear they never said such a thing). If we were to carry out such a programme, and somehow found the funds for it, how would we go about determining who the poorest in Nigeria are? Do we have a coherent, relational database that any government agencies can pull information from? LOL.
At the end of the day…
There’s a lot of work to be done if we will ever live up to the Giant of Africa moniker we love so much. And like Dr. Doyin Salami said, “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a step, followed by another in the right direction”.
From all indications, Vatebra’s big brand re-launch is a step in the right direction, because they have positioned themselves as a backbone as far as technology is concerned in both the public and private sectors in Nigeria. The question is, what will happen…beyond now?
On the same day and at the same venue from 2.00pm, the Lagos Scala Meetup will run an Introduction to Scala Programming training course. This free hands on course is aimed at developers wishing to explore the Scala Programming language.
The first of a 3 part series, it will cover basic Scala data types, control structures, classes, case classes and traits. Participants are expected to have had some commercial programming experience. (Java programming experience is not required, but would be beneficial). You can register here.
As the internet service providers grapple with operational cost amongst many other challenges to deliver optimum value based service offerings, the Spectranet brands comes top in a review of price comparison in the sector.
Looking at the table below, it clearly shows that with ten thousand naira, a Spectranet subscriber will enjoy 20 Gb plus free night browsing plus 10GB bonus per month while the same 20 GB is costing the another subscriber on a different network seventeen thousand naira.
Spectranet 50GB is costing the subscriber twenty thousand naira, while same 50GB is costing thirty six thousand naira on another network.
In the present understanding of the market consumers/subscribers should be seen to partner with brands that are both pocket friendly and very efficient.
With Nigerians being heavy on groceries shopping, many retailers have engaged in over pricing their products to the detriment of the final consumer. Take for instance, a popular hypermarket On Ogudu road sells a particular product for NGN 1,500 when the distributors sells out at NGN 660. This is a markup NGN 840 per unit of that product been sold. We understand that businesses have overheads, but profit can be reasonable by putting the buyers in mind.
One amazing fact about existing online grocery stores is that they shop from these already overpriced supermarkets and still add their markup to products. Take for instance, the product being sold at the supermarket for NGN 1,500. The online grocery stores adds a markup to it and ends up selling for NGN 1,650. This simply means, their customers are actually buying at NGN 990 more than the distributors’ price.
value4naira.com was created mainly to bridge this gap. By being the missing link, they create real value for the consumer. They have sealed partnerships with most of the Major distributors in the country and now consumers can shop their groceries at the best prices. So instead of paying NGN 1,500 when you enter a supermarket to buy ……..or pay NGN 1,650 when you shop from existing online groceries stores, you get it at the best retail price.
Planning for your grocery shopping? Do it right here on value4naira.com for very obvious reasons.
1) Very competitive price (cheapest online price)
2) Same day delivery at your doorstep for orders sent in before 11am
3) Yes, you can pay Cash on Delivery.

The excitement that lit her face when I gave her the package was nothing compared to the exhilaration when she unwrapped it. Even though she had tried to hide it from me, I knew she really needed a phone and so I got one. I watched, a little proud of myself as she inspected the gift. She couldn’t hide the feeling.
I could relate. The first shock that hits you when you hold the Gionee P5 Mini in your hands is its semblance with the seeming images in previews that seemed out of this world. The stylish curves of metal and glass create a perfect symmetry within the ambit of 132mm by 66mm and 9.1mm. I had chosen the white one, it was her best colour and it added a purity that you could feel.
She said that she loved me, that she was very grateful, I smiled. “It seemed like a small phone but by many standards, the P5mini is spectacular.”
“Tell me about it” she requested
“Its 4.5-inch screen may not be too much when you are talking about quantity but it is brandished with the latest technology on touch screen (on-cell) and display (in-plane switching). The on-cell is a touch screen technology that reduces the thickness of display by placing the sensor directly on the lenses. The in-plane switching ensures the clean and sharp display from whatever angle the screen is viewed.”
She looked at me and urged me to go on.
The Gionee P5 Mini employs the DTS technology to bring users an unforgettable experience of sound and music. It has a volume strengthening mode which takes the volume of the phone speakers beyond its limits and above the last crank, to deliver a valuable extra. It has a shake-and-change-the-music-feature that works.”
With that, she picked up the phone as if to check the things that I was saying. I let her. Then she took a picture of me. I didn’t see it coming.
“This is quite clear!” She was surprised. “The camera is so clear.”
“Is it?” I asked and continued “With a 5megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front camera, the Gionee P5 Mini does way better than other phones within this range. From the automatic face beauty that operates in its selfie camera to the automatic LED flash that is attached to the rear camera.”
She took one or two selfies and then her facial expression nudged me to go on.
“With four processors (quad core), multitasking is the new normal. The fully charged battery of the Gionee P5 Mini can hold up to 1800 (mAh) milliampere hour of charge. Combined with a lot of smart power management options, you can always be in power especially on the “extreme mode” where power consumption comes close to a standstill while keeping only the vitals of calls, message, clock and contacts alive.”
“I love the phone and I love you.”
Launched only last week, Gionee’s newest phone model, the P5mini is already making a name for itself and gathering momentum in all the spaces where phones play. An excellent combination of technology and elegance, the P5 Mini can be as flashy as it can be discrete, as loud as it can be silent; deliberately designed to fit occasions and it is available at Konga on http://www.konga.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=gionee&is_konga=1

In the bid to ensure that androids are made available to all, few brands have made exclusive phones that are affordable yet with the full features that make Smartphone’s the most sought after products in the market today. This gave consumers the opportunity to purchase products that will suit their lifestyle, functional and economic benefit.
In June 2015, we witnessed the release of the Samsung Galaxy J5 and the Gionee Marathon M5 smartphones into the market for the mid-level consumers. Recently, Huawei launched the Huawei G-Power, which moves in the same category with the J5 and M5 from Samsung and Gionee with similar features. Although these smartphones share similar features they all have their unique selling attributes, qualities and functionalities to endear consumers to purchase them. Lets look at the features on these smartphones one after the other.
Battery: The Huawei G-Power comes with a 4000 mAh battery, which gives consumers 90 hours of light use, 48 hours of heavy use and 12 hours of web surfing. The flash charge gives consumers 3 hours of talk time after a 10 minutes charge and also the smartphone can be used as a mobile power to transfer its charge to other electronics. In comparison, the Samsung Galaxy J5 has a 2600 mAh battery while the Gionee Marathon M5 comes with a 6020 mAh battery.
Camera: The 3 smartphones have a 13MP rear-facing camera and a 5MP front-facing camera. However, the Huawei G-Power can capture spontaneous moments with its Titan unique Ultra snapshot function and its visual search feature allows users to identify objects or landmarks and find information on them by snapping a photo.
Operating System: The three smartphones run on Android 5.1 with the Huawei G-Power having the Emotion UI 3.1 Lite and the Samsung Galaxy J5 the TouchWiz UI and the Gionee Marathon M5 the Amigo 3.1.
Size: The Huawei G-Power and Samsung Galaxy J5 has a 5.0 inches screen size and weighs 160.00 grams and 149.00 grams respectively while the Gionee Marathon M5 has a 5.50 inches screen size and weighs 211.00 grams.
Colors: The Samsung Galaxy J5, Gionee Marathon M5 and Huawei G-Power come in Black, White and Gold colors.

Memory Space and Price: The Gionee Marathon M5 comes with 3 GB RAM memory space but sold at Fifty Five Thousand naira (55,000) while the Huawei G-Power has 2 GB RAM space and 8 GB of internal storage sold at Forty Six Thousand naira (46,000). The Samsung Galaxy J5 has a 1.5 GB RAM yet it is priced higher than Huawei for Fifty Four Thousand naira (54,000).
We hope with these amazing specifications and designs consumers can tell us which product will be their favorite considering the economical and functional benefits of each smartphone.
Following anticipations and speculations, the new phone from Gionee was officially unveiled in Nigeria this morning. Despite its initial meeting with its consumers, it was love at first sight. On the various mini stages, the P5 mini in all its colours elicited sparkles of admiration.
All wanted a feel of the sleek paragon of technology and beauty. After the first moments and some demo, it is a little tricky to hold onto the first impression that the consumer encountered when he meets this latest model from Gionee. It is a feeling that is somewhere in between surprise, excitement and satisfaction.
It is not just the way it looks but the way it feels. The P5 mini is conspicuously bright and showy but it does not assert itself all at once as if it considers the perception of our senses. The Gionee P5 mini does a damn good job of “showing itself” very gradually.
Dimensioned between a statistics of 132 by 66 by 9.1mm, the phone is a plethora of aesthetics and features that make it bigger than it looks.
Its high tech (IPS) in plane switching (LCD) liquid crystal display presents a vantage perspective from which the phone is experienced, from the screen saver to the games and everything in-between. With 5MP, the camera is super smart and the picture quality is enhanced by autofocus LED flash. Its selfie has an inbuilt auto face beauty.
The Gionee P5 mini lets you create mood cards that express your moments and give you an opportunity to show the world. It lets you select colours from the front and rear camera to be displayed on your screen to simulate the chameleon mystic and it adds flavour of sight and movement to your audio music experience.
The P5 mini allows you to multitask. It cascades its windows in the novel, one window rolls into the other in an unending loop of fun and function. With smart battery management, you can always be in power. The phone also comes with an extreme mode set where battery consumption stays close to a standstill, leaving just the vitals of calls, messages, calls and contacts.
The Gionee P5 mini is not a small phone, it just fits. Its smooth and slightly curved screen protrudes seamlessly from the metal cover design – it fits into your hold, fits into your pockets, and fits into your lifestyle. Perfect for work, play and everything in-between, the Gionee P5mini is the new phone to have.
