• Nigerian Lawyers discuss the future of ICT in the profession at the first e-Legal Conference

Q & A Session with Alex Mouka and Mark Slade

Lawyers, under the aegis of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and stakeholders in the country’s judiciary gathered on Thursday, 9th of July, 2015 to brainstorm the impact of information and communication technology on the legal profession.

The maiden edition of the event; the e-Legal conference, was organized by Nigeria’s fastest growing online community of Legal Professionals, thelearnedfriend.com, themed, “Tomorrow’s Legal’’. It held at Lagos Court of Arbitration, International Centre for Arbitration and ADR.

Thelearnedfriends.com is an online aggregator and social media platform focused on showcasing technological innovations in the legal sector. According to the Managing Director, Mrs. Abiola Obileye, “the nature of legal services is changing as more legal businesses are incorporating technology and digital.”

The Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Lagos Branch, Mr. Alex Mouka, delivered the keynote address at the event, where he advised lawyers to embrace the fusion between information and communication technology (ICT), and legal professionals. He added that technology solutions are available to all legal firms regardless of their budgets.

Chief Bolaji Ayorinde, SAN, another key speaker acknowledged the intellectual capacity of Nigerian lawyers and shared that the conference is sure to rouse innovation in the country’s judiciary, to a scale comparable to international legal set ups. Other speakers at the conference included: Mr. Femi Ojumu, who unbundled the expression ICT and characterized it as a physical or web-based configuration which facilitates the use, exploitation, mining, storage and transfer of data that’s underpinned by scientific expertise.

Dean of Student Affairs, Covenant University, Azubuike Ezenwoke, explained how the next generation of lawyers should be trained on acquiring problem solving skills including competencies dependent on access to accurate, timely, sufficient, reliable and relevant information.

The conference ended with the CEO of Ringier Digital Marketing painting a graphic picture of the growth of internet penetration in Africa and concluded that Nigeria has the highest number of internet users, Facebook users and active mobile in the continent. He emphasized the relevance of ICT in the 21st century legal practice; while advising firms to reduce its overhead by operationalizing internal business processes through ICT, commercial logic and practical economics.

  • SMEs are key drivers of Nigerian Economic Growth – Deepankar Rustagi, VConnect CEO

    IMGL1016_Snapseed

With the astronomical increase of businesses in Nigeria, customers always desire authentic information regarding potential clients – the kind of services they offer and their capabilities. Business owners, especially Small and Medium scale (SMEs) entrepreneurs; also aspire to enlarge their businesses by looking for financial support and promotion of their brands. In this day and age, where information and refined packaging define selling power, businesses desire extensive coverage and attention.

In the light of this urgent business need of buyers and sellers, VConnect, an indigenous technology firm, came into existence. VConnect started as a local search engine that helped in promoting local businesses in Nigeria, especially SMEs, by helping them in the advertisement and sales of their products. The company has also enhanced the customer-client relationship to ensure that buyers can easily get access to reliable information about businesses, have conversations and even purchase their needs online. The enhancement of the value offering to businesses was the purpose of the company’s re-branding project as it sought to give customers a holistic view of their potential clients. It also aids promoting the business and services by updating their web presence with updated and relevant information, simplifying their businesses which paved way for VConnect’s new pay-off line.

The founder of VConnect, Mr. Deepankar Rustagi, recently, in a tete-a-tete with MARKETING EDGE, where he discussed the Nigerian business environment, the reason for venturing into this laudable business initiative and his plans for the internet marketplace in Nigeria. Deepankar, has lived in Nigeria for over 17 years and bagged an Engineering degree from India and a diploma in entrepreneurship from Haas School of Business, Berkeley.

    Excerpts:

As a business, where lies your focus? Which model do you adopt in attracting your target audience?

At the beginning, we made it clear that we wanted to help grow the economy by ensuring that we support business owners in any way possible. We have not lost sight of that and we are working towards adding value to thousands of Businesses. As for the business model, we are here to support small and medium scale enterprises by bringing them online, and empowering them to utilize these tools for their products and services. In a nutshell, we help them sell their products. So, our business model is basically focused on connecting buyers and sellers. That is why our pay-off has evolved from information whenever, wherever to “Find. Buy. Sell.”

You have been in this market for a while, what are the key constraints of the Small and Medium Scale Enterprises which your business has been contending with?

First of all, I must state that it is not easy for first time Entrepreneurs / SMEs to do business in Nigeria considering the diverse challenges. Some of these challenges constitute serious threats to the survival of small and medium scale enterprises in Nigeria. As you know, small scale businesses hold the key to the survival and growth of any economy. Nigeria, being a large economy, must begin to see small and medium scale enterprises through the same prism by ensuring that necessary investments are channelled towards that direction. But unfortunately, the small and medium scale enterprises in Nigeria have been on the receiving end. Key constraints of the SMEs in this market include lack of awareness or knowledge about the different schemes and tools available in the market for their financial and marketing needs and the lack of know-how on how to promote their businesses to reach a wider audience at the right price.

What is the vision and mission of VConnect?

The vision and mission of VConnect is to connect buyers and suppliers, to make it convenient for buyers to find products and services in the market and make it convenient for businesses to sell their products and services online. We look at a situation where down the line, every business will be able to sell their product and services online at convenience and every consumer will be able to buy from a virtual market online.

Every business in this market has its unique selling point. What differentiates VConnect from other e-commerce sites?

The difference between VConnect and other e-commerce sites is that VConnect does not sell any products that is owned / warehoused by it, VConnect only acts as an agent that helps sell and promote Seller’s products and services. In this manner, we don’t buy product or stock them, we help small and medium scale businesses to sell their Products online. That is the major difference. We are not competing with the sellers in the market but we are enhancing the capabilities of the sellers in the market by helping them sell online and enhance their reach.

What has been the attraction of investors into the Nigerian market?
Nigeria is the largest economy in Africa, a population of 170 million people and a country with an economy of over half a trillion dollars in GDP. It is the largest country in Africa in terms of consumer base. The growth of the GDP is also very good. We believe investors from abroad are looking at the fast growth rate of the Nigerian economy and the potential Nigeria would offer by 2020.

Recently, the naira was devalued. What is the implication of this policy decision?

Of course, there are going to be serious implications. At least, two things would have serious effect on the Naira going forward. One is the devaluation of the Naira and the after effects of the recently concluded elections. A lot of small and medium scale businesses are skeptical about how things are going to be in the next couple of months. We are hoping that the outcome of elections will be an era which ushers growth and harmony, an age of non-violence and expedite business in this country. We are also hoping that Naira gets stabilized so that those who are trading in imported goods or companies dependent on imported raw materials can run their businesses successfully.

How is VConnect positioned in the market?

We feel that one sector that is going to show a skyrocket growth in the Nigeria economy is the service industry. It is about time that the government and private sector supported the SMEs. For them to record growth, we are positioned to empower SMEs. We are oriented in a way that we work directly with the SMEs helping them reach where they are today and grow to where they want to be.

How prepared are you for competition?

We are prepared for competition because we have a very good team. We have been in the market for a couple of years and have good relationship with small and medium scale enterprises. They know us and have delivered value to them. We are more than happy, feel the more competition we have, the better the external forces will be to help us achieve our objective.

As a business, you must have gone through some highs and lows. Tell us about some of the success stories since four years that the business has been in existence?

One of the things we had on our side when we started was the first over advantage.  We started at an opportune time, there was no one who or which was providing information about businesses. Four years back then when we started; we were the first to capture information about all the local businesses and structured local businesses available in the market. We did a lot of hard work in the beginning which is one of our success factors. We went from one business to another and gathered their particular details which have helped us reach where we are today. As we speak, we have millions of users coming to our site on monthly basis to search for products and services that they need.

You just re-branded, what led to this initiative and what do you intend to achieve with the re-branding process?

The re-branding exercise is driven by the shift in the value offerings of the company from information wherever, whenever to find, buy and sell, where other buyers and sellers can do their online on our portal. We have re-branded to give a new feel to the brand, from a red and green colour to orange colour. It is a simplified logo. I think for a young brand like us, it is good to be young and innovative.

Don’t you think doing this on behalf of buyers and sellers will be at great cost to your business?

We are a company that is innovative and know Nigeria well because we have a strong Nigeria team working on ground giving us the information. So, we have actually developed partnerships which help us deliver better value at a convenient price. That is why we are delivering convenience not just to the buyers but also the businesses. Buyers can buy at the convenience of their house while businesses do theirs at the convenience of their stores.

Do you do a background check to know if those businesses truly exist?

What we do is that every business that is listed on our site, we call them, verify their details provided. Every business that is recommended on our platform, we physically visit that business and ensure that it is a good business, and that all the products and services are genuine. They are open and offer good quality services. That is when we recommend the business. We try and inform our users about it with the updated content

What is your growth projection in the next five years?

In the next five years, what we have in mind is that if we can bring every organised business in Nigeria, to help them fulfil their dream of growth, to help them double their sales online.

Applications Now Open for Cloudpreneurs Project from Microsoft, Fate Foundation & Mara Mentor

“Trends in business tend to change often and quickly,” writes Jessica Oaks in an article which examines the ground trend of cloud-based businesses. According to her, one trend that can’t be ignored is the move towards the cloud. And as more businesses adopt cloud-based storage and software solutions, the market for cloud solutions is growing rapidly. In fact, it is estimated that by 2015 spending on cloud storage solutions could reach $180 billion.

Wondering why cloud-based solutions are becoming the go-to for businesses large and small? You’re in luck! We’ve outlined three benefits business derive from cloud computing and an opportunity to receive training and support to start a cloud-based business.

    The Benefits

Security – Though there is no such thing as flawless security, you can greatly reduce security by opting for cloud solution. The decentralized nature of cloud-based system makes it attractive to business owners as the odds of data being compromised, corrupted, lost or manipulated in some form due to power outage, theft; hacking or other means is greatly reduced.

Cost Savings – In most cases, cloud-based solutions allow businesses to save substantially on IT costs. Much of the responsibility of an IT team – maintaining data, upgrading systems, looking after hardware, etc.is offset to a third party (in this case, the provider of the storage solution being sought), says Jessica.

Flexibility – Cloud-based solutions puts important information on the fingertips of employees at any given time. By enabling information retrieval across multiple devices, such as business cell phones, tablets and laptops, cloud-based storage allows for quick, easy and universal access to documents and information – perfect for the business person on the go.

    The Opportunity

  • Funding Critical to Tech Start-Up Survival: Tsaboin CEO

    Tsaboin

Mr. Dele Odufuye, CEO, Tsaboin, promoters of Tsaboin TrafficTalk, a traffic solution online platform, has said that accessing financial support would increase the survival rate of tech startups in the country.

According to Odufuye, while speaking on his decade-old experience as a tech entrepreneur, he noted that lack of appropriate funding, notwithstanding how brilliant an idea or unique a solution that a tech developer has, lack of appropriate funding could hinder such idea.

He said: “It is important to highlight one of the ingredients to a business’ success: cash. The truth is that, in business, cash is king. There are a lot of reasons why businesses fail but the major one is that they run out of cash or they do not have enough cash to start with in the first place. If there is one rule, one major rule, it is not to run out of cash.

The future of the country and even the world is technology. We need to seriously start looking in that direction. Tech developers and entrepreneurs, like any other entrepreneurs, need all the support they can get. Many solutions that could add value to the society have been aborted because the idea owner couldn’t access funding to support such innovations.

In the case of Tsaboin, which today, is the biggest online traffic solution platform in Nigeria, we encountered the same financial challenge at the beginning. We had a number of projects that we were developing simultaneously. These projects were consuming the little cash the company was generating. At a time, we had to reduce our staff strength in order to cope. Despite this, we didn’t give up. We kept at it until an investor showed up. And with that, we had enough cash injection for the entire period of research, development, testing, and growth till we started generating revenue. Without enough cash injection, we wouldn’t have been able to kick off or even die along the way.”

A major component of the Tsaboin traffic solution is the live cameras installed in strategic routes across Lagos like Ozumba Mbadiwe, Anthony, Ikorodu Road, 3rd Mainland Bridge etc. Users can now view videos of traffic situations real time on their preferred routes through these live cameras. To achieve this, he said, serious funding is critical.

Odufuye, who is also a two-time winner of the popular Future Awards in the “Best Use of Technology”, advocated a special intervention fund for tech entrepreneurs, which he said, would empower them and provide the platform for young Nigerians to unleash their technological skills and potentials.

Shedding more light on Tsaboin Traffic Talk, Odufuye said the solution was designed to provide real-time traffic information to road users in Lagos in order to make an informed choice on the routes to ply.

“Traffic Talk is a crowd-sourcing online platform that road users can use to help one another beat traffic by informing about road and traffic conditions. This shared information will help road users make smarter decisions about routes to ply and avoid,” he said.

The Tsaboin Traffic Talk application is available on both mobile and web formats. The mobile version can be downloaded for android phones, Blackberry, iOS, among others. Aside these, traffic updates are also available through sms via a short code [TRF to 3880] for Etisalat subscribers.

For downloads, simply log on to www.tsaboin.com/downloads and for traffic camera live feeds, log on to www.tsaboin.com/livecams.

  • Nike Foundation Partners Paga To Launch The Girl Effect Accelerator

    african girl

Paga, Nigeria’s leading mobile payments service has been selected to participate in the Girl Effect Accelerator, the world’s first global accelerator dedicated to benefiting girls in poverty.

The program is being launched as a partnership between The Nike Foundation and Unreasonable Group. Beginning on October 31st, just outside of San Francisco, this exclusive 2-week program will bring together 10 companies from across the world positioned to impact the lives of millions of adolescent girls living in poverty with world-class mentors, strategic financing, and access to a global network of support.

“Today, less than two cents of every international development dollar goes to girls – the very people who could do most to end poverty,” says Shaifali Puri, Executive Director of Global Innovation at the Nike Foundation. “As long as girls remain invisible, the world misses out on a tremendous opportunity for change.”

During the program, representatives from Paga and the other selected companies will be meeting with 20 renowned mentors including Jessica Jackley, co-founder of Kiva.org, George Kembel, founder of the Stanford d.school, Seth Godin, serial entrepreneur and author, and Paul Polak who has uplifted over 20 million people from poverty.

Daniel Epstein, who is directing the Girl Effect Accelerator and the founder of the Unreasonable Institute and Unreasonable Group said:

“We aren’t working with your typical Silicon Valley start-up in this program. The 10 selected ventures currently operate in over 30 countries and averaged over $2 million in revenue last year off of customers living on less than $2 a day. We are hedging our bets on true “black swans:” start-ups who have significant market traction, are working in the fastest emerging markets of our time, and are positioned to measurably benefit millions of girls in poverty. The team at Paga is exactly the type of venture we are privileged to be working with.”

Paga which was founded in 2009, with the mission of transforming lives via innovative and universal access to finance has been expanding its service line to help bridge the gap between women, financial access, commerce and economic development. The recent launch of Paga for Business – A suite of products designed to give this and the next generation of entrepreneurs, irrespective of gender or capital the tools they need to start and manage a successful business is just one of the many ways the company is helping to address the traditional male bias and give female entrepreneurs a level playing field.

    Epstein went on to add:

“Paga serves as a prime example of a venture that is solving problems we didn’t think were solvable, in markets most don’t yet consider to be markets, with technologies we didn’t know existed – profitably. Each of these selected companies shares a common eagerness to experiment in what it means to measurably benefit millions of girls in poverty.”
Commenting on being selected to be part of the accelerator, Paga Founder & CEO, Tayo Oviosu said

“Growing up in a single parent family where my mother was our superhero, I recognise only too clearly the societal pressures of tradition and discrimination that women face in trying to live up to their full potential. Women are the bedrock of our society; and investing in them from an early age is the key to our economic progress. We are humbled and extremely excited to be chosen from so many to be part of this global initiative for change. We look forward to gaining key insights from the accelerator and working with the Unreasonable Group to better equip the next generation of African women.”

Research currently shows female entrepreneurship to be higher in Africa than in any other region of the world. In Nigeria alone, over 85% of SME’s are owned by women; and it is estimated that providing women with access to the right tools can add $13.9 billion to our economy annually.

Daniel Oparison, Head of Growth and Consumer Business at Paga; who will be attending the program in California added

“We applaud the efforts of the Nike Foundation and the Unusual Group in identifying and bringing together all these diverse ventures to help address the key issues facing the girl child. Paga exists to transform lives and we welcome any opportunity that enhances our ability to do that, not just for girls but for every single Nigerian.”

The accelerator will conclude with a Culminating Event at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco on November 11th.

  • Sponsored: Introducing Foto – African Images For African Startups

    foto TC(1)

People might wonder why they would need stock images. This is a valid question. The answer? Commissioning custom photography is expensive, and downloading images off the the internet raises potentially hairy legal questions. Plus it’s just harder to find ethnically relevant images that suit the context of an African startup or business.

Enter Foto. No need to hire photographers and models or download low quality images off the internet anymore. Forget about legal issues and copyright. Foto is a stock image startup company that aims to fulfil the image needs of creative people with over 10,000 high quality African images of people, places and culture.

    foto

To meet the needs of new businesses (like us), Foto is introducing a special offer targeted at bloggers, web publishers, graphic designers and startups looking for African images to illustrate their works or ideas, but don’t have a huge budget to play with. For just N10,000, you can purchase a bundle of 25 images. The offer is unique in that it brings the unit price of each image down to just N400 in all available categories.

Foto also rewards the user via a referral program where customers earn N500 worth of image credits for every friend they invite to Foto. If a user invites enough friends, they can earn enough to download images for free.

The stories of African startups are best told with African images. New and powerful African images are added to Foto’s growing database everyday. Customer support always is standing by to handle bespoke requests for the developer or business that needs help finding the image that is just right for their project.
