  • Ayodeji Balogun, co-founder and chief operations officer, Terragon Group has urged the government to partner with the private sector in order to develop our 21st-century curriculum that would prepare Nigerian students to fit into the emerging fourth industrial revolution (4IR) technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Data Science, among others.

He stated this at the 2019 Data Science Nigeria (DSN) Summit & Bootcamp held on Tuesday, in Lagos.

According to him, “We think that in terms of curriculum in the educational system in our schools, government can work together with private sector to influence the curriculum and infuse more advanced topics around data science, machine learning so that students could get access and hands-on experience at a very early stage, before they get out of school and get trained by their employers.”

He also called on the government to provide adequate infrastructure that would enable players in the ecosystem to perform their duties optimally.

AI emerging trends masterclass by Terragon at the recently held Data Science Nigeria summit in Lagos

“The biggest problems we have in Nigeria as far as I’m concerned is access to data and infrastructure. In other countries,  the government provides access to some sample data sets that engineers can work with to train their models, you don’t have to think about looking for data sets, here in Nigeria, there’s nothing like that, so we think that government can support a lot in that area”.

“In a continent of about 1.2 billion people across a landscape that may be larger than many other continents put together, it is often quite difficult to identify and reach people in Africa.

At Terragon, our goal is to use data and technology to simplify this process of connecting brands to the African consumer through intelligent connections at scale on the mobile device”

We rely very heavily on data, and leverage data science to enable smart connections to mobile for businesses across Africa. Data science, artificial intelligence, and machine learning are the tools of our trade.

This is why partnering with the Data Science Nigeria AI Summit and Bootcamp was very natural for us, as it aligns with our key objectives and goals. It has been very rewarding for us because we have been able to contribute to the growth of the ecosystem as well as the emerging talents that will lead us into the future.”

L-R: Victor Ohuruogu, United Nationals SDGs, Dr. Stephen Odaibo, RetinaAI, USA, Ms. Kathleen Siminyu, Africa Director, AI 4Development, Dr. Bayo Adekanmbi, Founder Data Science Nigeria, Dr. Eric Sodomka, Research Scientist Facebook, UK , Ayodeji Balogun, CTO, Terragon Group and Tomi Amao, CTO, Softcom during Data Science Nigeria summit in Lagos recently.

Balogun commended the conveners of DSN for the giant’s strides they have made in the sector, especially in the area of democratizing of AI knowledge through their various programmes in our tertiary institutions.

He also acknowledged that a lot still needs to be done in order to get Nigeria students ready for the forthcoming 4IR.

“As far as AI is concerned in Nigeria, it is still day one; we have not even scratched the surface at all. It is a long road and I’m happy about platforms like DSN because we are laying the foundation, but there is a lot that can be done. Which is why we have collaborated with Data Science Nigeria to train young talents in the different masterclasses we delivered to hundreds of data science young talents, we are also sending two outstanding students to Tunisia, to learn more about Data Science and Artificial intelligence.”

“We have a lot of simple problems in our society that AI and Machine learning can help us solve and I’m looking forward to young people building solutions in our space around data analytics & marketing technology to help startups achieve product-market fit faster and help enterprises businesses explore new growth areas. I’m confident that AI can help Nigeria leapfrog to the rest of the world in several other areas around education, healthcare, security, logistics and even governance” he stated.

Terragon which started 10 years ago has offices in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, South Africa, and India with more offices being planned in other continents; Terragon has invested millions of dollars in marketing cloud and data analytics technologies to lead innovation in enterprise marketing and cloud solutions in Nigeria and Africa.

Our commitment to helping African businesses grow faster and achieve maximum growth and return on investments.

  • Nigeria’s tech leaders are calling for hundreds more survivors of the Nigeria Police’s systematic attacks on the country’s young tech entrepreneurs and workers to come forward, as they commence legal proceedings. The #StopRobbingUs campaign was launched in September 2019, to put an end to the common practice where Nigerian police stop young people with laptops or any electronic gadget and unlawfully arrest, attack or, in extreme circumstances, kidnap them, forcing them to withdraw funds from their bank accounts in order to regain their freedom.

Since its launch, the campaign has garnered support from some of the biggest names in Nigeria’s $2bn tech sector, as well as public policy advocates and has to-date, raised $45,000 to support a public awareness and legal campaign. A number of survivors have already come forward, however, the campaign is now urgently calling for more survivors to come forward to support the multiple legal suits. Survivors can contact the campaign via http://bit.ly/stoprobbingus-survivors.

The #StopRobbingUs campaign has formally engaged Probitas LLP as legal representation to drive the legal advocacy. The team will be calling for the internal disciplinary process against the police officers involved to be more robust and to ensure that the guilty police officers are dismissed and punished, as a deterrent to other police officers. They will also deploy all legal options to stop the harassment and robbery of persons with laptops, casual dress and dreadlocks.

Probitas Partners LLP; BA Law; Babalakin & Co; Sofunde, Osakwe, Ogundipe & Belgore; Smithworth Partners; Pistis Partners and K & C Partners have agreed to render the service pro bono, with the #StopRobbingUs campaign covering expenses from the funds raised.

Chief ‘Bolaji Ayorinde, SAN, OFR, will lead the team, which includes Tola Oshobi, SAN of Babalakin & Co; Chairman of the Lagos Branch of the Nigeria Bar Association Yemi Akangbe of Sofunde, Osakwe, Ogundipe & Belgore; Mutiu Ganiyu of Smithworth Partners; Mayowa Owolabi of Pistis Partners, and Kelechukwu Uzoka of K & C Partners. Wale Irokosu, Managing Partner, Probitas Partners LLP will coordinate the strategy.

Ms Odun Longe says, “Since we launched the #StopRobbingUs campaign, we have been inundated with stories of young people in the tech sector – men and women – being illegally detained and extorted by rogue police officers. We want many more to come forward to share their experiences with us, so that we can come together as a community to fight these illegal detentions. We have attempted to engage federal and government bodies, with some acknowledgement of the current situation, however, we feel that due to the severity of the attacks on so many of our young people,  virtually on a daily basis, the only viable next step is to take legal action against those who commit these crimes.

“We are thankful for the donations that have been received already to help fight this campaign, and also we cannot thank enough Probitas LLP for acting as legal representation on a pro bono basis. Their professional expertise in this area will help us build on the momentum we have already gathered, as we say #StopRobbingUs!”

Survivors of attacks by police officers who wish to support the campaign should visit http://bit.ly/stoprobbingus-survivors to share details of their attack.

FairMoney Offers instant loans from N1,500 to N150,000 via a mobile app

FairMoney, the mobile bank for emerging markets, is running the ‘No Excuses’ campaign to encourage individuals and small businesses to take advantage of its loan offering of     N1,500 to N150,000.

FairMoney gives more than 6,500 loans daily, and since the company commenced operations in 2017, it has disrupted the banking landscape, disbursing over one million loans to individuals and small businesses around Nigeria.

A customer can download the app from the Google Play Store and, based on their credit score, calculated using Artificial Intelligence, receive an instant credit offer between N1,500 and N150,000. The first credit is always for a period between 15 and 30 days. Customers who show good repayment behaviour can increase the loan term to up to 3 months.

Explaining the idea behind the ‘No Excuses’ campaign, Seun Oratokhai, Head of Direct Marketing, FairMoney said: “From our research, we learnt that most individuals and small business owners in need of a quick loan first approach their family and friends, or a commercial bank. Unfortunately, they may get a long list of excuses such as ‘I wish you asked yesterday,’ ‘I borrowed what I am spending,’ and so on. Many of these individuals also struggle to meet the requirements of commercial banks, such as collateral and documentation.”

“Our guarantee to prospective borrowers is that, if they satisfy the eligibility criteria there are ‘No Excuses’ in securing a loan from FairMoney. We are also not asking for any documents or collateral. All FairMoney requires are a few personal details, the customer’s BVN and bank details,’ Oratokhai, concluded.

Securing a loan with FairMoney is easy and can be done in a few quick steps. Firstly, the applicant must download the FairMoney app from the Google Play store. The applicant can sign up using their telephone number and answer a few questions to get a loan in only five minutes. Funds are disbursed instantly and, depending on the loan offer, can be repaid in one, two or three instalments easily within the app. Repayment options include Automatic Bank Transfer, USSD and Debit (ATM) card.

A fun and engaging part of the ‘No Excuses’ campaign is ‘The Friends Loan Test’ in which consumers ask their friends and family for loans and post their funniest excuses on social media using the hashtags #FriendsLoanTest and #QuickLoansNoExcuses. FairMoney will repost the funniest excuses on the company’s social media pages, and the post with the most likes each week will win prizes. ‘The Friends Loans Test’ is running until 19 December 2019. Furthermore, customers who refer their friends will receive N500 off their next loan.

FairMoney customers can also use the app to pay for value-added-services such as airtime and data with no transaction fees and a significant discount.

  • In the service industry, the customer is believed to be ‘king’. But when it comes to how financial service providers serve their customers, it seems the reverse is the case. In today’s financial landscape, people are still fraught with many challenges, particularly, as it relates to how they can enjoy freedom over their money.

To address the pitfalls prevalent in the financial industry would require skill, patience and an understanding of the average customer’s plight, and GoMoney, a CBN licensed mobile money service provider, has risen to the challenge. It has positioned itself as a fully digital financial service provider that puts customers at the forefront of its activities.

GoMoney does not just house your money like a typical account, as it also helps you conduct a myriad of financial transactions successfully and efficiently. Using the GoMoney app, you can pay bills, schedule payments, split bills with friends, and also send money to people within and outside the GoMoney ecosystem.

Banking customers need not struggle with unnecessary debits, transactional errors, service delays, and other issues regularly associated with stowing money. GoMoney proves that the concept of having unfettered access to one’s money is not farfetched.

How GoMoney is Making Magic Happen

    1. Minimal transactional charges

By using GoMoney, you are freeing yourself from the incessant charges that you could face when your money sits in a bank account. You can fund your GoMoney account and be certain that you are not going to get debited for account maintenance, SMS charges, token charges etc. Also, when you transfer money to other people, you do not need to worry about any extra charges if the recipients are GoMoney users. In the case where the recipient account is not a GoMoney account, a flat rate of N7.875 is charged for each interbank transaction; no matter how much it is. This transactional charge is a combination of the NIP service charge and VAT.

    2. No Transactional Errors

No one enjoys the uncertainty of trying to transfer money and not knowing if the transfer went through. It is worse when you realise that the transfer was indeed successful and you were debited multiple times for your single transaction. You won’t have that problem with GoMoney. Through the app, you can move your money in real-time without fear of transactional errors. You can also make transactions through peer-to-peer payments, on the app, through emails and phone numbers.

    3. Managing Costs Effectively

As the year is rounding off, everyone is trying to cut down on excessive costs so they would have enough to spend during the holiday. GoMoney provides features to help you achieve this. Using the app, you can track how much you’ve spent over a period of time. The ‘Reports’ feature on the app shows you a well-detailed categorisation of how much you have, how much you deposited and the items that you spend your money on. Likewise, the “Split Costs” feature gives you a breather as you no longer need to foot all the costs of your hangouts, commitments, and emergencies. You’d also be able to use the app to share bills with the relevant parties going forward.

    4. Cover recurring expenses

Some bills will not stop coming, no matter how many times you pay them; electricity, data, airtime, the pocket money you need to your siblings every month… You name it. With the “Scheduled payments” feature on GoMoney, you can just automate these payments by scheduling recurring bills and save yourself the stress of paying them manually.

    Now is the time

The moment has come for you to take on the driver’s seat and have full control of your money. With the GoMoney app, you can finally step up and explore the numerous services GoMoney offers. To get started, you first have to get on the GoMoney waitlist. GoMoney would like to reward the first set of people to register and share their referral links with prizes and exclusive access to the app before everyone else can get into the app.

    What’s in it for me?

You can join the many Nigerians enjoying the benefits of GoMoney by signing up for early access to the app today! Presently, many Nigerians are on the waitlist, and all you need to do to join them is register at gomoney.global and share your unique code with as many people as you care to tell. The more people you refer, the more points you earn, which bumps you up a few places on the leaderboard and brings you several steps closer to winning up to 75,000 Naira.

  • Photography is the new rave! Every day, people around the world take about three million pictures with their smartphones. This describes how photography has become a huge part of our lifestyle. So it goes without saying that everyone wants a smartphone with a good camera.

As a smartphone brand, vivo understands this trend and has consistently improved its camera features to give its consumers a super user experience.

With their V7 and V7+, vivo is the first smartphone brand to launch a 24MP Front Facing Camera. Not just that; vivo is also the first to introduce the 32MP elevating front Camera with the V15 device. And now, they have broken their own innovation records with the newly released V17PRO. This awesome device debuts a dual pop-up camera!

The device which recently launched in Lagos is already gaining momentum and “talkability” amongst mobile device enthusiasts across the country. Guess the elevating dual front camera of the V17 PRO was a great hit, little wonder the Internet is agog with its release.

Asides being the first smartphone brand with a dual pop-up front camera, the 32MP+8MP wide-angle camera of the V17 Pro comes with a “soft-light” that guarantees very clear and beautiful selfie pictures even in low light.

The device also has an AI Quad Rear cameras, with Super Wide Angles which have been designed to expand landscape shots even more. Similarly, in the AI Quad Rear cameras is a macro-camera that helps pick even the slightest detail when taking a close-up picture within four-centimeter radius.

The vivo V17 Pro is supported by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 AIE processor with 8GB RAM + 128GB ROM that ensures performance for applications and other system activities run seamlessly with enough storage capacity to accommodate your multimedia content.

Considering the complexities of our time and the many decisions we have to make daily, it appears consumers will have one less trouble deciding which device to buy with the V17 Pro.

  • Rubies is powering and energising the FINTECH world

Rubies have distilled, simplified and codified banking capabilities/systems and made them available as APIs. The capabilities are backed by banking licence that it has and the Technology architecture with which the banking capabilities are made available. Banking services are being distributed in the Manufacturer-Reseller supply chain fashion.

Rubies have the core technologies (Core Banking systems, cards Systems etc) on top of which it built banking capabilities to power various products/services for various target markets: individuals, SMEs, businesses, financial institutions, groups/associations, schools, insurance companies etc. These capabilities and the core technologies are made available as granular APIs for the use of businesses and Fintech companies who can resell the banking products/services that these capabilities power.

The FINTECH company can resell they’re banking/financial products/services in native “layer-1” forms – lending, funds transfers, payments, wallets etc – or go creative by layering self-designed “layer-2” products that wrap the native “layer-1” services. By the latter, you would then imagine Rubies APIs as playing the roles similar to Google’s Location/GPS APIs on which UBER wraps her taxi services.

For businesses/corporates, their proprietary or off-the-shelf ERPs (internal Financial systems) can be linked to their bank accounts directly and therefore issue financial instructions directly rather than having to use the bank’s own applications etc.

Rubies FINTECH-as-a-service gives FINTECH access to its growing multidimensional database, proprietary algorithms and a wide range of middle-office services (AML systems, Anti-fraud systems etc), while they (fintechs) enrich it through their platforms activities. Google gives you access to its GPS database, your access/activities enrich the same database.

The benefits are tremendous. The FINTECH company is able to achieve time to market in hours, eliminate integration cost for a web of Payments ecosystems, get access to the banks’ ever-growing database and algorithms (e.g. a lending algorithm) and provide services that only banks would be able to offer while we take on the regulatory KYC responsibility. FINTECH business is now defined by the power and the limits of entrepreneurs imagination, never again by the limitations of a licence, regulation, technology, integration hurdles, availability of capital, skillsets, availability of human resources etc.

Where the FINTECH is unable to provide the platforms (Mobile app etc), Rubies takes a step further to white-label their platforms. FINTECH simply wraps her business strategy and delivers her proprietary layer-2 products/services, whilst Rubies takes on the KYC, AML and other regulatory responsibilities.

  • Opera Ads is a fast-growing online advertising platform that seamlessly integrates into the Opera product portfolio and its 350 million global users. The company has recently announced the addition of new ad units that will help Nigerian advertisers increase engagement with their target audiences and maximize the performance of their online campaigns.

In traditional online advertising, marketers tend to redirect users to a landing page where they need to navigate a number of clicks to reach a call-to-action button for what they need, such as contact information, online chats, or just the phone number of a business. Unfortunately, these action buttons are often not integrated with apps or phone functions, forcing the user to copy and paste numbers and email addresses or memorize a phone number and a code to be able to complete the desired action.

The new ad units in Opera Ads are seamlessly integrated with apps and smartphone functionalities, removing the number of clicks needed and improving the experience of both the advertiser and the user. This means that people no longer need to remember phone numbers or copy and paste email addresses or annoying codes to get the information or service they need. These ad units are automatically integrated with popular services such as WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger and allow interaction through formats like USSD, SMS messaging, or via phone calls.

“Opera Ads is changing the digital landscape of mobile advertisement within Opera’s key markets,” said Per Wetterdal, VP of Global Business Development at Opera. “The new ad units are unique to the mobile ad ecosystem, and provide access to Opera’s massive user base of more than 350 million users.”

New and unique ad units in Opera Ads

    Expanding beyond browsers

Opera has set new growth plans worldwide by expanding its product portfolio beyond mobile applications and introducing new innovative online marketing platforms such as Opera Ads, OLeads and OList. With this strategy, Opera plans to maximize the online visibility of millions of Nigerian businesses and continue leading the digital shift in Africa.

This effort is in alignment with DSN’s roadmap to building a community of one million talented artificial intelligence (AI) specialists in Nigeria during the next 10 years, which will position Nigeria as one of the top 10 AI talent destination in the world, with significant GDP multiplier across all industries.

The book is an effort towards AI knowledge democratization as it simplifies the concept of artificial intelligence in a friendly manner to our young ones, with a view to stimulating their curiosity and driving their interest in learning about AI. The book starts with generic introductions to the core concepts including machine learning, deep learning and reinforcement learning, and then introduces step-by-step programming using the Python programming language. With the installation of the new local servers in Lagos, Opera is improving the online experience of its fast-growing user base in Nigeria. The servers speed up online browsing, making the connection times up to four times faster than before when using Opera mobile applications like the popular Opera Mini browser and the leading news app in Nigeria, Opera News.

“At Opera, we know how important speed is for people’s internet experience,’ said Krystian Zubel, IT Director at Opera. “With the launch of our first local data servers in Nigeria, we’re taking another leap forward in user experience, providing millions of people with a faster browsing and news experience.”

Speeding up the current online experience in Nigeria

According to the recent Worldwide broadband speed league report 2019, presented by Cable, African countries rank among those with the slowest internet connectivity in 2019. In Nigeria, there are more than 110 million internet users with an expected increase to 188 million within the next four years. These numbers represent a major challenge for technology companies who will need to invest more in digital infrastructure to guarantee a high-quality online experience for millions of internet users. With the new local servers, Opera is taking one step further in assisting the growth of the digital ecosystem in the region.

With data servers in the country, Opera users in Nigeria will immediately get a snappier browsing experience. According to the test results, the response time to  our servers has significantly improved, with a 4x improvement in the response time for the users with the fastest network conditions. In addition, overall browsing has also become faster with the implementation of intelligent caching mechanisms.

The new data servers are already providing service to Opera users in Nigeria. Their installation has been one of the fastest in Opera’s history thanks to the work of local and international engineers who set up the servers.

    Leading the digital transformation

Two years ago, Opera announced an investment of $100M to facilitate growth in the African digital economy, accelerate internet adoption and strengthen the digital internet ecosystem with its partners in the African region.

Since then, Opera has followed its Africa First strategy and accelerated the growth of its user base in the African region. In the Q1-2019 edition of the State of Mobile Web report, Opera revealed that its African user base had grown by 26% over the year, reaching nearly 120 million Opera users in the region. This number includes users of the popular Opera Mini browser, Opera browser, and the standalone news application Opera News—which became the world’s most downloaded news app in the second quarter of 2019.

This year, Opera has also expanded its product portfolio beyond mobile applications by introducing new innovative online marketing platforms such as Opera Ads, OLeads and OList. With this strategy, Opera plans to bring millions of African businesses to the internet and help them maximise their online visibility to ramp up their sales.

The installation of the new Opera data servers in Nigeria is also part of Opera’s strategy to continue leading the digital transformation of Africa. The company has ambitious plans to expand the presence of its data servers to more African countries and continue enhancing the digital lives of millions of internet users across the continent.

Opera News Hub connects seamlessly with other Opera mobile applications like the popular Opera Mini browser and the standalone news app Opera News. This means that content creators who choose to distribute original content in Opera News Hub, will have a unique opportunity to reach a new international audience, increase their number of followers on social media channels, and run their own online publication across the various Opera mobile products.

The user interface of Opera News Hub is easy to use and allows content creators to set up their online content in minutes. Once the login and registration process is completed, Opera News Hub allows you to create an article where you can edit the text and images according to the goals of your publication.

Content creators that are already using other social media platforms to share their content can link their social media profiles to their own website in Opera News Hub to increase their traffic and profile views.

The Opera News Hub platform also allows authors and bloggers to keep track of their publication traffic, helping them better understand the topics that their audiences are primarily interested in. The platform’s dashboard displays detailed information about the number of impressions, visualizations and shares that their articles have. This information becomes valuable for content creators who are searching for detailed information that they can use to improve the monetization of their online content.

Enhancing the digital shift in Africa

Opera has great ambitions to continue leading the digital transformation of Africa. Last year, Opera announced its Africa First strategy, wherein the company committed to launching its new products and services in Africa before anywhere else in the world. This strategy was set up with the ambition of contributing to the growth of the African digital economy and speed up internet adoption across the continent.

The inclusion of Opera News Hub into Opera’s product portfolio is part of Opera’s strategy to expand its products beyond mobile apps. Opera News Hub joins the recently announced online content and marketing platforms Opera Ads, OLeads and OList. With these digital content and marketing platforms, African businesses and content creators now have better opportunities to interact with their audiences and grow in popularity by expanding their online presence.

  • OPay a provider of payment, ride-hailing, food delivery and loan services have been given approval by Nigeria’s Apex Bank Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to commence international money transfer in Nigeria. With the approval, OPay will start facilitating remittance B2B, B2P and P2P remittance services into Nigeria. This is coming off the heels of the earlier announced $50 million fundraised from major venture capitalist some months ago.

“The plan is to distort the remittance space and ensure that international money transfer into Nigeria is safer, faster and more affordable” according to Kunle Olamuyiwa, Director of Remittances Services at OPay. With OPay’s infrastructure in Nigeria, it will be easier and faster for global remittance companies to partner with OPay to help their customers to receive money from their business partners, customers and loved ones directly into their OPay wallet and any bank account or mobile wallet in Nigeria. Also, recipients can go cash out their funds from their OPay wallets at any of over 100,000 OPay mobile money agents in Nigeria.

“We are already working with major global remittance companies around the world and will start facilitating remittances to Nigeria with these partners, ensuring the best fees and exchange rates, speed and security,” said Kunle.

When asked how this will benefit the recipients of money transfers in Nigeria, Kunle said “ There is a plan to commence a big-bang promo in December with lots of prices for recipients of money transfer who receive their money directly into their OPay wallets. I can only advise everyone who has families around the world to get an OPay Wallet. They will get better value for these funds doing transfers to any bank, paying their bills, buying food and also using our on-demand transport services i.e. Oride, OBus and Otrike. And on top of all, they can channel unused funds to OWealth and earn interest on it daily. It is indeed better timed for recipients of international money transfers in Nigeria”

OPay launched its mobile payment service in August 2018, creating an infrastructure on which the company is now also adding new services. The agent-centric mobile payment operation focused on reaching the massive unbanked population of Nigeria. Currently, OPay has expanded into other verticals like ride-hailing (ORide and OTrike), an online food delivery (OFood), as well as facilitating access to third-party provided microloans (OKash) and wealth management (OWealth) and there will be more to come in the coming months.

  • C:\Users\user\Desktop\SPark 4\Unboxing\TECNO Spark 4 unboxing (9).jpeg

The TECNO Spark 4 hits a perfect spot between quality and price. It is the 4th-gen of smartphones in the Spark line. This device offers mobile phone trends in vogue without large disparity in price compared with its pricier products from other brands.

At a starting price of ₦34,500, the Spark 4 lets you enjoy the best of mobile experiences — offering you a variety of cool smartphone features.

Let’s have a quick look at some of them:

    Spark 4 Key Specs

    • 6.52-inches, IPS LCD screen
    • 1600 X 720 pixels, with 269 PPI
    • Always On Display, HDR10
    • Quad-core MediaTek Helio A22
    • 2GB of RAM
    • 32GB built-in storage, with memory card support up to 128GB
    • Android v9.0 (Pie), HiOS 5.0
    • 13MP + 13MP + 13MP triple rear cam
    • 8MP front cam
    • 4G LTE
    • 4000mAh non-removable Li-ion battery

Here are the top reasons the Spark 4 is the best budget smartphone you should buy:

    Sleek Design

The handset sports a plastic build that has round edges. If you’re one of the students in Nigerian tertiary institutions who are stuck on the Spark series, the Spark 4 will appear very modern to you.

The phone makes a commendable attempt at fitting into the latest trend of smartphones, without notable departure from its budget circle.

There’s a gradient design on the rear cover of the device.

    C:\Users\user\Desktop\Spark 4 colour.jpg

Further, on the blue version of the Spark 4, the gradient comes in a blend of two fades on the Blue colour option as well as on the Purple variant.  The Spark 4 is offered in four colour options.

The back cover contains a triple camera system, along with short camera information, a fingerprint sensor as well as a TECNO brand on the bottom.

    Very Bright & Large Display

    C:\Users\user\Desktop\SPark 4\Unboxing\TECNO Spark 4 unboxing (14).jpeg

Concerning the display, this smartphone gets a notched 6.52” IPS LCD, which supplies a screen resolution of 1600 by 7200 px.

While there is a bottom bezel, it is remarkably smaller in size in comparison with its predecessor, the TECNO Spark 3.

    Capable Camera

In spite of the difficulty in ensuring affordability without comprising quality, TECNO did a decent job of providing the latest trends on the smartphone.

This year, the number of rear cameras that are built on smartphones is higher. While where 4 cameras are gradually becoming common now, improving on the camera number from dual cameras on the Spark 3 and the Spark 3 Pro to a triple cam system on the latest TECNO Spark 4 is commendable.

With more cameras and more features, you can now capture breath-taking pictures of your favourite spots and destinations on campus.

The triple cam setup on the Spark 4 phone has a 13MP primary shooter that features an aperture of F/1.8, a 2MP depth cam as well as a QVGA unit.

At the front section, we have an 8MP cam for taking selfies.

    Good Battery Life

It is common knowledge that epileptic power supply remains a perennial problem in Nigeria, affecting all and sundry. The situation may sometimes be worse when you have lectures for long hours on campus and are not opportune to charge your device.

Armed with TECNO Spark 4’s 4000-mAh battery, you can rest assured of getting a solid battery life, which will last for many hours during the day/night.

    Affordability

The major selling point of the TECNO Spark 4 is its cheap price, ₦34500. In manufacturing the phone, TECNO was able to find the sweet spot between quality and affordability.

    Spark 4 Talent Hunt

In its usual practice, TECNO is offering students an opportunity to showcase their talents and a chance to become Spark 4 Campus ambassador and win one-year internship & pocket money.

The contest started a few days ago and is billed to come to an end on November 29, 2019. You can submit your entry by visiting TECNO’s Official Facebook page

We look forward to getting to find out who will be the lucky winners of the exciting competition!

  • The Camon 12 Series, which is the 6th generation of TECNO’s camera-centric series, appears to be changing the narrative as all devices in this series come with many visible upgrades when compared to other Camon devices. The popularity of the Camon Series cannot be questioned. At least seven (7) in every ten (10) mid-range Android Camera phone is a Camon phone.

While the Camon 12 Pro and the Camon 12 spot a first of its kind Triple AI Max rear camera on a Camon device, the Camon 12 Air takes it a step further as the first TECNO device with a Dot-In Display.

The device has an amazing look and feel that his patterned after the colourful aurora lights visible in the Northern and Southern hemispheres of our planet. This reflects beautifully under light conditions and is introduced to the market in two colour variants Ocean Blue Gradient, Alpen glow Gold Gradient, which gives buyers an open list to make their choice from when in the market to buy a device.

The Tecno Camon 12 Air features a 6.55 inch display with a screen resolution of 720 x 1548 pixels and a pixel density if 403 PPI, which makes it larger than the other devices in the Camon 12 Series.

Particularly, the Dot-In Display of the Camon 12 Air places the Selfie Camera of the device on the left side of the device, which makes it the first of its kind on any TECNO phone to come with this upgrade.

This gives a potential user of the device a lot more screen ratio when playing games or watching videos on the Camon 12 Air, as the device screen is only open by its impressive 8MP Selfie Camera, which captures amazing Selfies using its on-screen flash as against the dual flashlight present on the Camon 12 and 12 Pro.

In terms of storage, the device comes with 3GB + 32GB and can be expanded up to 128 GB storage and a very durable 4000mAh battery, which promises to last its user a longer usage time after a single fast charge.

Worth mentioning is that the device is powered Mediatek’s Helio P22 Processor, with a processing speed of 2.0GHz, which makes possible everything smart and you do not have to get scared about the device getting hot.

The most intriguing thing about the Camon 12 Air, is the fact that the device sells at a very user-friendly price of N42,500 which is very impressive. TECNO keeps showing that they truly care about Nigerians.

  • With rumours and teasers arriving en masse over the past week, the smartphone industry is buzzing with news about the HUAWEI P30 lite. Huawei’s flagship P series has always been trusted to integrate innovation into every variant in each new generation of line, and this time is no different.

Premium features like stunning FullView Displays, impressive AI, unique gradient finishing and hyper-cutting edge chipsets have steered the expectations of the smartphone industry in recent years. Huawei’s flagship Mate and P families have certainly helped drive this influence and continue to push the bounds of the industry.

This October, Huawei Nigeria officially announced the release of the New Edition HUAWEI P30 lite, not long after the budget brother in this flagship lineup – the HUAWEI P30 lite – surfaced in public. Compared with the P30 and the P30 Pro, the P30 lite is aimed at an audience looking to spend a little less, but still, have the flagship-level experience they deserve.

How does the HUAWEI P30 lite offer a flagship-level experience? Besides its notably trendy design, the phone’s camera functionality is one of the most attractive points. The HUAWEI P30 lite is known for its photography chops, especially after the HUAWEI P20 Pro became the world’s first smartphone with triple cameras and Huawei quickly became known for being one of the best in the smartphone photography field.  It sports a triple camera setup that is nothing but premium. The 24MP HD lens and 8MP wide-angle sensor altogether offer you a grand photography feast.

Although people have gradually got rid of the concept that pixel is the only element that affects photography quality, pixel size is still an important indicator of a sensor’s quality. The HUAWEI P30 lite features a large f/1.8, 24MP HD main camera with 6P’s 0.9 μm pixel size. What does this mean? Essentially, every photo will be bright and crystal clear.

For daily use or travel, the HUAWEI P30 lite’s specifications are high enough to meet almost any requirement a customer might have. The light-sensitive HUAWEI P30 lite perfectly produce the sky and scenery in the daytime by adjusting white balance and aperture parameters. With this capability shortcoming of image quality, like an overexposure or darkness are considerably improved. Meanwhile, thanks to the 24MP sensor, pictures are taken by the HUAWEI P30 lite are still satisfactorily clear when zooming in.

The consumer who chooses the HUAWEI P30 lite is often elegant, trendy and international. They love to be the spotlight and live for the bustling nightlife of the city. While taking photos in low light was once a struggle, until Huawei’s smartphone-exclusive Super Night Mode and 4-in-1 light integration technology changed the game forever. With the HUAWEI P30 lite, the memories of your fantastic nightlife can be saved with clear and beautiful pictures.

Memories are precious, and photography is one of the best ways to ensure you keep them forever. With the HUAWEI P30 lite’s 8MP, 120-degree Ultra-Wide angle camera, all the details of your fantastic life can be locked down. Remembering everything from magnificent architecture to grand natural scenery is a little easier when a 120-degree Ultra-Wide angle lens is handily recording them.

This Ultra-Wide angle lens also acts to improve image deformation, allowing the HUAWEI P30 lite to achieve camera effects of a 103-degree wide-angle lens. This kind of lens can record 2.4x the content that a 78-degree wide-angle lens can. Considering this device has a 24MP HD sensor on top of this 120-degree ultra-wide-angle lens, it’s obvious the HUAWEI P30 lite will provide a majorly powerful zoom performance. With hardware like this, you’ll love looking back at your brilliant life on the HUAWEI P30 lite’s stunning 6.15-inch Full View screen.

HUAWEI’s P30 lite remains a critical example of the company’s innovation, born to showcase the very latest in research and development. Although the HUAWEI P30 lite doesn’t have the specifications to match the HUAWEI P30 and HUAWEI P30 Pro, it keeps up with the relevant smartphone developments to provide the ultimate experience for even the trendiest users.

When you think about capturing those amazing landscapes on your trip across Nigeria or taking stunning selfies with friends and loved ones, the HUAWEI P30 lite with top-notch performance is the most affordable smartphone to help you achieve all that and more.

The HUAWEI P30 lite is now available for Pre-Order, priced at N99,000. Pre-Order the HUAWEI P30 lite and get a digital wristband, an electric toothbrush (only for pre-order) and also enjoy Airtel Double Data.

  • The new online lead generation platform integrates seamlessly into Opera’s scalable advertising ecosystem in Nigeria.

Opera Limited (Nasdaq: OPRA), one of the world’s major browser developers and leader in AI-driven digital content, has announced the launch of OLeads—a new online lead generation platform for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). OLeads offers a unique tool to maximise SMEs’ visibility and online presence, increasing awareness about their business, and helping ramp up sales.

Today, SMEs are the backbone of the Nigerian economy. According to the Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), there are more than 40 million SMEs in Nigeria. However, one of their major challenges is to leverage rapid digital transformation as a means to scale their business since SME operations today are mainly offline. Half of the Nigerian population is already connected to the internet, however, with further adoption expected. With the release of OLeads in Nigeria, Opera is taking the next leap forward in its strategy to transform Nigeria’s digital advertising ecosystem by removing barriers for these local businesses to come online and connect with the fast-growing internet population in the country.

“Nigeria is undergoing a rapid digitalization with already more than 110 million people onboard to the internet, and it’s estimated to grow to 188 million within the next four years,” said Per Wetterdal, VP of Global Business Development at Opera. “With OLeads, we are enabling millions of businesses to participate in this digital transformation, providing them a platform with user-friendly tools and a fast and easy way to come online, reaching Opera’s massive user base.”

With OLeads, SMEs in Nigeria can easily create their first mobile websites and landing pages for their marketing campaigns. OLeads integrates seamlessly into the contextual advertising platform, Opera Ads, with direct access to Opera’s huge user base in Nigeria.

With the user-friendly interface of OLeads, any SME or business owner can create a mobile website from scratch in less than five minutes. The platform does not require any programming or design skills. Once an SME registers on the OLeads website, they will be able to choose between a wide variety of website templates that they can personalize according to the needs and goals of their business. By dragging and dropping text, images and call-to-action modules, the SME can have their business landing page up and running in minutes. The platform will also allow business owners to manage the data generated from their website.

More than 3000 businesses already on board for OLeads

Since its soft launch in Nigeria in September 2019, OLeads has already onboarded more than 3000 businesses to the platform in just one month. With this milestone, OLeads is gaining a strong position in the Nigerian advertising market as a trustworthy platform that has rapidly grown its user base in a short period of time.

“With the launch of OLeads, we are now helping more Nigerian businesses find their target audiences online,” said Wetterdal. “We have received very positive feedback from the SMEs we have on-boarded during the soft launch of the platform, and we are excited to now offer this service to millions of businesses in the country.”

Accelerating the digital transformation of Africa

Opera has significant ambitions for accelerating the digital transformation of the African region. This includes the use of the popular Opera Mini browser, Opera browser, and the standalone news application Opera News, which became the world’s most downloaded news app in the second quarter of 2019.

Opera has also set new growth plans in Africa by expanding its product portfolio beyond mobile applications and introducing new innovative online marketing platforms such as Opera Ads, OLeads and OList. With this strategy, Opera plans to continue leading the digital shift in Africa and maximize the visibility of millions of African businesses online.

  • Huawei Consumer Business Group today launched the HUAWEI P30 lite, the latest photography-focused triple-camera smartphone. Combining an exquisite design with Huawei’s innovations, the latest HUAWEI P smartphone is equipped with three rear cameras with support for ultra-wide angle photography and artificial intelligence (AI) features. Making high-quality photography accessible, it enables young photography enthusiasts to capture poster-quality images on a smartphone. The triple-camera setup comprises a 48MP main camera, 8MP ultra-wide angle camera and a depth camera. Inside the HUAWEI P30 lite, the AI mobile chipset Kirin 710 works in tandem with EMUI 9.0.1and 128GB of internal storage to deliver the best smart user experience to users.

AI Triple Camera with Ultra Wide Angle Support

Pioneering the increasingly popular triple camera setup, the HUAWEI P Series has long been regarded as one of the best smartphone families for serious photographers. The HUAWEI P30 lite, as the latest entry to the illustrious line-up, is a stunning smartphone designed for young consumers that enjoy photography and sharing their work with friends and family. With three rear cameras supporting high resolution and ultra-wide angle photography, combined with Huawei’s powerful camera algorithms, the HUAWEI P30 lite lets users take studio-grade photos without using studio equipment. Because the resolution is so high, users can also use images captured on the HUAWEI P Series to produce high-quality poster prints.

Every focal length has its own unique charms and advantages. A telephoto lens excels in retaining the details on objects, whereas the ultra-wide angle lens provides a greater perspective. However, to everyday users, travelling with multiple lenses is not realistic—so they often fall back to their handy smartphones for their camera needs. HUAWEI P30 lite’s triple-camera system covers the full zoom range, supporting various photographic effects. The ultra-wide lens plus the dual-camera module don’t just let users capture the world with crisp clarity, but its wide perspective lends itself to recording exciting moments in everyday life.

The 48MP high-resolution camera uses a proprietary supersampling lossless zoom technology, allowing it to deliver zooming performance equivalent to a professional telephoto lens supporting 2x optical zoom. The inclusion of the ultra-wide angle lens for its 8MP camera makes HUAWEI P30 lite one of the first smartphones in the industry to support a 120-degree field of view—or double than that of regular smartphone lenses. It also helps users take in and capture more beauty than ever before—especially when shooting mountainous landscapes or city skylines.

Exquisite Design and Innovative Manufacturing Techniques

In line with other devices sharing the same brand, HUAWEI P30 lite continues this excellence in design, melding a trendy look with Huawei’s core technologies to deliver the inclusive, premium user experience that users have come to expect from devices of the HUAWEI P Series. Besides a rich suite of photography features, HUAWEI P30 lite also thoroughly exemplifies Huawei’s commitment to the pursuit of perfection, inside and out.

In this pursuit, Huawei adopted the most cutting-edge manufacturing processes on the HUAWEI P30 lite. HUAWEI P30 lite is available in three colourways: Midnight Black, Pearl White and Peacock Blue. These are an evolution of Huawei’s renowned gradient colour, utilizing a glare film to accent the back of the device with a hint of futuristic glamour.

The full process includes two films. The first is painted with a gradient finish, upon which a laser-treated film is layered. The top layer has fine textures that reflect, refract and diffuse light, adding a mesmerizing sheen to the device, which is especially prominent under sunlight.

Manufacturers have experimented a broad range of notch designs to maximize the screen-to-body ratio on devices. HUAWEI P30 lite features a 6.15-inch Dewdrop display, which uses highly miniaturized dew-shaped notch to house its internals, allowing it to achieve a massive screen to body ratio of 84.1 percent. The screen panel naturally connects with the frame to form perfectly rounded and smooth edges.

The HUAWEI P30 lite is made for the international elites and professionals who love fashion. These users never cease to act boldly and creatively, and they are open to new things, constantly chasing the trends. In addition, HUAWEI P30 lite natively supports video ringtones—users may download clips from social media platforms or websites to use this feature. It also supports 480fps super-slow motion video capture that slows down motion by 16 times to highlight the intricacies of objects in motion. The GPU Turbo has been further upgraded to support more games, allowing HUAWEI P30 lite to deliver a better gaming performance across more titles.

Millennials (mostly youths) in Nigeria are defined by their uptake in technology, that is why the HUAWEI P30 lite is absolutely a worth-to-buy smartphone. It offers you bleeding edge technology and also gives you the best qualities you need in a phone.  The HUAWEI P30 lite will be available for Pre-Order starting from 28th October, priced at N99,000. Pre-Order the HUAWEI P30 lite and get a digital wristband, an electric toothbrush (which is not available after pre-order) and also enjoy Airtel Double Data.

    Exclusive to Airtel and SLOT.

  • Access Bank’s expanded digital lending portfolio, which gives Nigerians quick and 24/7 access to funds for emergencies without any collateral, has hit a record N1billion daily in loan value.

According to Victor Etuokwu, Executive Director, Retail Banking, Access Bank Plc, “We are at the forefront of digital lending across the continent. This is a deliberate choice we made when we introduced the first USSD based digital lending product in Nigeria based on our deep understanding of our operating environment. In the past two years, we have disbursed over 3.5 million loans to individuals. We acknowledge it is no mean feat when compared to where the market is coming from, but this is still a scratch in the overall potential of this market. This year alone we have disbursed over N45b in over 2 million disbursements to individuals and have recently witnessed a spike in our volumes hitting N1billion daily. This achievement and our focus on retail lending reiterate our commitment to democratize access to financial services leveraging digital technology.”

Since the launch of Access Bank’s digital loan portfolio with PayDay Loan as the flagship product, Access Bank has continued to expand its loan portfolio using its proven innovative algorithms and deep machine learning capabilities. The Bank’s retail innovation journey has led it to expand its digital loan offerings to other multi-tenured variants to fit the needs of its diverse retail customer segments.

Access Bank also launched a dedicated loan application platform known as QuickBucks in the third quarter of last year; a Mobile Banking Application for digital loans aimed at improving customers borrowing experience for retail loans. As part of its commitment to deepening digital finance, the Bank has gone a step ahead to provide access to phone ownership as it recently launched a 12-month Device Ownership scheme where any salary earning customer can select a phone of his choice from our QuickBucks app and walk into any of our partner outlets across the country to pick up the phone.

Chinedu Onuoha, Head Digital Banking Business Development, Access Bank, commented recently on this laudable achievement: “Our objective is to ensure that there is a digital loan product for every adult Nigerian who has proven means of livelihood because we know that every individual at one point or another requires some form of financial support. Our flagship digital loan product, PayDay Loan, is tailored to help individuals meet their urgent cash needs. Though the tenor for this loan is 30 days, we also have loans with tenors of 3 months and 6 months.”

  • On the 31st of October, 2019, TechCabal will join over 60 companies that are holding sessions at the Startup South conference in Uyo. TechCabal will host a fireside chat with Funke Opeke, CEO, Main One. During the fireside chat, Ms Opeke will share her thoughts about deepening broadband penetration within Nigeria’s South-South/South-East region and beyond.

Broadband is the backbone of the digital economy. Improving broadband penetration typically expands the size of the digital economy. It provides the infrastructure upon which innovators and entrepreneurs can build products and services. Also, it will increase the customer base that they build these products for. Entirely new companies and a new crop of entrepreneurs will emerge whenever broadband enters a city.

While the number of internet subscribers in Nigeria continues to increase, network quality is still generally poor. More than half of the population still have no access. Of the top 10 states in Nigeria with regards to internet subscribers, only 3 are in the South-South region, none in the South-East. There are none in the top 5. Broadband penetration currently stands at about 31%. Today, internet penetration in the country generally relies on mobile wireless networks.

MainOne is a leading broadband infrastructure provider in the West Africa region. The company was launched in 2010 by Funke Opeke and she has led the company to grow its footprint with major network interconnection facilities, extensive terrestrial fiber build-out, regional points of presence, and delivery of services into 10 countries in West Africa. Ms Opeke possesses a wealth of knowledge that is crucial to understanding the state of West Africa’s digital economy and how to grow it.

  • Understanding the relationship between regulation and innovation is a major step towards surviving and sustaining the fintech ecosystem. In recognition of this, the Nigeria Fintech Week will put a spotlight on the role of regulations, the role of respective players and future possibilities. It has lined up a number of activities to stimulate the ecosystem at its 2019 conference.

The Nigeria Fintech Week understands that Regulation is the backbone upon which innovations thrive and has created a “REGUVATORS” conversation that would stir this relationship in the right direction alongside a free Masterclass for Regulators.

The journey of fintechs is about innovation, inclusion & inspiration. Everything done in the fintech industry must be geared towards improving the lives of individuals, building a dynamic economy that promotes a more inclusive society.

This inclusiveness involves adopting new technologies to facilitate the delivery of regulatory requirements and a need to automate the more mundane compliance tasks and reduce operational risks associated with meeting compliance and reporting obligations.

Join key regulators at the main conference (29th and 30th October 2019)  such as the DG, Central Bank of Nigeria, Mrs Aishah Ahmad, DG, Securities & Exchange Commission, Ms Mary Uduk , Immediate Past Governor, Central Bank of Sierre Leone, Dr Patrick Conteh, CEO, Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation NDIC, Alhaji Umaru Ibrahim, CEO, Nigeria Financial Unit NFIU, Mr Modibbo R.
