A report by GSMA in March 2018 revealed that Lagos is the city with the largest technology hub ecosystem in Africa.
With the forthcoming gubernatorial elections, there is the need to elect a forward-thinking government who will help realize the potential of Lagos as the bedrock for technology and innovation in Africa, one with a vision to expand the ICT ecosystem in Lagos into a more productive enterprise for homegrown technological solutions.
It is with these ideals in mind that the APC governorship candidate Babajide Olushola Sanwoolu has a mandate to partner with local and international organizations to establish more technology hubs across the state. He also seeks to improve on the 20% internet penetration in Africa by working with ISPs to implement a broadband rollout plan to power affordable internet access across Lagos within two years. He will work to maintain Lagos state’s position as the number one state in ICT development by patronising homegrown technological solutions and leveraging technology to improve public service delivery to achieve the smart city status.

At Bitcoin exchanges like NairaEx, hundreds of people every day buy Bitcoin to invest or start trading cryptocurrency. However, recent weeks have seen several cryptocurrency security alerts issued online.
Popular Bitcoin exchange platforms in Canada, New Zealand, and Israel have either been hacked or lost customer deposits. Here at NairaEx, we haven’t been hacked. However, to help you buy Bitcoin safely online, we have put together a comprehensive cryptocurrency security guide.
Top Cryptocurrency Security Tips for 2019
Recently, Canada’s biggest Bitcoin exchange QuadrigaCx and New Zealand’s biggest cryptocurrency exchange Cryptopia lost an estimated $216 million in user deposits. In both cases, exchange users lost coins by choosing to store coins on exchanges, rather than in their own offline wallets.
At NairaEx, we don’t recommend that users store cryptocurrency on our or any other exchange. Instead, when people buy Bitcoin or sell Bitcoin on NairaEx.com, they do so via their own private wallet addresses.
Tips for Buying & Selling Bitcoin
Before you buy Bitcoin at NairaEx (or any other Bitcoin exchange) set up your own Bitcoin wallet
As soon as you have purchased coins, withdraw coins to your private wallet
Always use a wallet which allows you to back up your own coin private keys
Only Buy Bitcoin from Trusted Bitcoin Exchange Platforms
By storing cryptocurrency coins off exchanges, coins can’t ever be accidentally lost by exchanges or stolen during exchange hack attempts. However, people who buy Bitcoin still need to exercise caution when choosing an exchange to buy from.
Always use a Bitcoin exchange based in your local area (like NairaEx in Nigeria). Many exchanges are not regulated, and many do not serve users from different overseas locations. Others operate scams which may take fiat cash deposits but not provide Bitcoin in return.
Avoid using exchange websites which appear to experience several bugs and glitches. This can be a sign that exchange websites are nothing more than phishing scams.
Only use exchanges which enable users to reach out to customer support teams if they need to. Not publishing contact information or business addresses on websites is often a sign that exchange websites are scams.
Always Use Non-Custodial Bitcoin Exchanges like NairaEx
NairaEx is a non-custodial Bitcoin exchange. This means that we do not offer to hold cryptocurrency on behalf of users in our own wallets. Bigger exchanges like Coinbase, boast that they offer the world’s safest and most state-of-the-art custodial storage solutions. However, all these means is that exchanges can potentially be hacked at some point in the future.
Invest in a Hardware Wallet & Learn How to Use It
At NairaEx, we encourage all our users to set up their own Bitcoin wallet before they buy Bitcoin from us. However, it is important to remember that all smartphone and desktop app wallets can be hacked. For this reason, we recommend that users invest in trusted hardware wallets from brands like Nano and Trezor.
Our Cryptocurrency Security Summary
Hearing about exchange hacks like the recent Cryptopia hack can be scary. However, investors who lose coins in exchange hacks only do so because they don’t follow guidelines like those, we have laid out above. This being the case, consider referring to this guide whenever planning to buy Bitcoin or sell Bitcoin at NairaEx or any other exchange.
It is a known fact that the emergence of digital banking has transformed the Nigerian financial services industry. These days, bank customers can easily perform all sorts of financial transactions right on their mobile phones, thereby avoiding stress. However, the ability to enjoy a really good digital banking experience lies in how functional a mobile banking app is. And there is, perhaps, no better mobile banking app than the Diamond Mobile app.
It is not surprising that Diamond Bank Plc currently has one of the best mobile banking apps in the country. After all, the bank has, for many years, been at the forefront of pioneering the digital banking revolution in Nigeria. And despite its successes in this regard, the bank continues to innovate in efforts to guarantee a future of secure, fast, and convenient banking for all.
Conversely, this article examines some of the reasons why Nigerians need to download Diamond Bank’s mobile banking app, which is otherwise known as Diamond Mobile. The app’s unique features and good user interface are some of the things that endear it to its current users. Interestingly, these are the same reasons why you should download the app now, assuming you do not already have one. See for yourself below.
Key highlights of the Diamond Mobile App
Launched in October 2012, this mobile banking app has, over the space of seven years, become one of the most highly-rated and most downloaded mobile apps in Nigeria and Africa at large. Checks by Nairametrics confirmed that over three million users who have downloaded it from Google play, iTunes, and Windows.
Indeed, Diamond Mobile has many interesting features, which is the reason why millions of people love to use it. Take, for instance, Diamond Bank customers can conveniently use the app to perform basic banking transactions such as transferring money and checking account balances. These things, as simple as they may seem, would have required account holders to visit their local branches and queue for hours. But thanks to Diamond’s very functional app, customers can now perform those same transactions right in the comfort of their rooms.
More benefits of the app
There are a whole lot of things users of Diamond Mobile can do with the app. Transactions involving bills payment (rent, utility bills, paid TV subscription, etc) can be made using the app. Diamond Bank customers can also use the app to purchase airtime for the phones, book flights, reserve hotel rooms, buy event and movie tickets, as well as manage the recipients/beneficiaries for all kinds of payments.
Your details are protected
Another important feature of the Diamond app is the fact that it protects the banking details of its users. As you may well know, using a mobile app entails signing into it with your personal details. It, therefore, becomes important that users are guaranteed the protection/safekeeping of their mobile banking details. This is exactly what Diamond Mobile does for its users. The app safely stores users’ details and even helps them recover their login details in situations where phones are either lost or stolen.
In this interview, Mr Francis Eke-Metoho, the Chief Technology Officer of FarmAgric, a subscriber-focused agritech company linking farmers with investors speaks about the importance of youth participation in agriculture, the future of agriculture and the dynamics of running an agritech company in Nigeria.
Risks are unavoidable in businesses, how do you cope in a case where there seems to be no return on investments?
It is true that every business has risks and agriculture is no exception. It is dangerous to go into any business without carrying out proper research, which is why we have a team of specialists who carry out research on crops and the economies of them based in their seasons. With findings from these researches, we are able to decide the ideal period to carry out each cycle of farming using a worst case scenario estimation of each situation. This enables us to minimize risks and be prepared for any eventualities. In addition to that, we have a partnership with Leadway Assurance to help secure our farms. We do all these to mitigate against such situations as you have mentioned.
How have rural farmers adopted the use of technology?
The use of technology hasn’t been fully implemented in a number of local communities. Most of the farmers are aware, but they don’t have access to it neither do they have the technical know-how. When our team approached some of them about the training organised on use of mechanization and how they can increase their yields and minimize cost, most were eager to learn, while others were a tad sceptical, which is understandable and expected.. We provided some training on how to go about it and also helped practicalize during farming. They are happy to achieve more with less work.
What made you start FarmAgric?
FarmAgric started off as an offshoot of Eme Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited (EFCL). In the course of carrying out our business activities in EFCL, we came across a number of farmers who had arable land but could only cultivate a small portion of it as a result of lack of inputs and being financially handicapped. In a bid to address this need coupled with other reasons, FarmAgric was born and in order to give it a life of its own we separated from EFCL, the parent company.
You mentioned other reasons in your previous answer, please expatiate?
As a youth who grew up in Nigeria, and have been privileged to travel across the West African zone, I have observed the rapid growth of the teeming population of Africa and come to the realization that there are 3 major problems that will really affect the next generation if not addressed. One is unemployment, the second is access to hassle-free finance and the third is food security. I have always seen agriculture as a solution to two if not all three of these problems. This is another key reason for the creation of FarmAgric. What we are doing with FarmAgric is two-pronged – empowering farmers by giving them access to finance and technical know-how, and showing youths that they too can be a part of agriculture. This is important because we are the next generation of farmers who will sustain agriculture profitably in Africa.
What is the future of technology in Agriculture?
A number of global trends are influencing food security, poverty, and the overall sustainability of food and agricultural systems. Future agriculture will use sophisticated technologies such as robots, temperature and moisture sensors, aerial images, and GPS technology. This is why as youths, our interest and participation in agriculture is very crucial. These advanced technologies for precision agriculture and systems will enhance profitability, efficiency, safety, and environmental friendliness. We still have a long way to get to this point in Nigeria but we are well on our way. I like to refer to this as Agriculture 4.0.
What are the best qualities you think an entrepreneur should have?
The ability to lead (leadership skills), strategic decision-making, an insatiable quest for knowledge, ability to network and nurture relationships, ability to work with a team – listen to and accept constructive criticism, customer management skills amongst others.
Where do you see FarmAgric in 5 years?
In five years, we foresee a major expansion across Nigeria and Africa as a whole as a key player encouraging youth participation in agriculture whilst also reducing food insecurity. Part of our international expansion plan is to move into the Republic of Benin and Ghana. Generally, our vision is to be a major impactful player in the sector.
What word do you have for young entrepreneurs out there doing their things?
Dreams are valid if actions are taken. Let’s move from being dreamers to action takers – achievers. There is always a solution to every problem, let’s be the ones to create it. Don’t be scared of taking on a challenge, it is a requirement for success. Just keep your head up and keep doing the right things, eventually, you’ll break even.
Mr Francis Eke-Metoho, the Chief Technology Officer of FarmAgric

Different websites come with different appeals, visibility, search functions etc. A perfect website is one built with the customer at heart. They usually have a good visual appeal, light-speed loading abilities, ad-free pages, safe environment, enhanced search functions, secure transaction and a guaranteed payment method as the case may be.
This is a quick review of the ultra-modern and perfectly built website by Africa’s Leading gift card trading company, PATRICIA.
Let me start this review by noting that Patricia actually went all out and made various versions of their platform.
They also introduced this Ultra modern Website with an App available on all Platforms.
The PATRICIA website is the first of its kind in this part of the divide. PATRICIA is the first and most renowned gift card trading company in Africa. The fast-growing e-commerce company is fast attracting users from every nook and cranny of Africa, especially West African states like Nigeria and Ghana.
Trading on the website is as easy as it can be, the landing page is quite beautiful and soft on the eyes, not crowded with too much information and it’s straight to the point. They showcase a list of all their ambassadors to send a message of trust for first time users, generally, the aesthetics of the landing page is unique and one of a kind.
The first simple step is to create an account. A simple step of entering your data, i.e. username, phone number, email address and password. This helps for easy data capture and complaint solving. The process is seamless and secured.
Next is the user interface where you have your dashboard, Transactions, Wallet, Complaints, Reports, Messages and Rates. Before we further on this, let’s talk about the website fonts. The fonts used on the website is soft and appealing. I think that’s what makes the website even more ultra-modern.
Patricia did a good job with large portions of the website being white and blue with little hints of orange here and there, the reception of the website to the eyes is very friendly as it’s easy to see through every aspect of trading especially if you are a new user. Receptivity is topnotch!
Trading gift cards on the website is fast. The arrangement and pattern are made in a way that a toddler can navigate the site without being told what to do. As a new user, you really don’t have to stress as the methods to trade stares at you in the face. Selling your gift cards and other forms of cryptos like bitcoin and perfect money is just a click away with a perfect step by step process.

The website is perfect and it is ads free, has lightening loading abilities, safe environment, enhanced search functions, secure transaction and a guaranteed payment and withdrawal method including Local currency and Bitcoin. Trading your gift card on a website has never been this easy.
Life is a continuous journey of survival and determination. Those who make a great mark in life are those that strive to succeed against all odds. We see this tenacity in the lives of Nigerians.
Famed for their indefatigable spirit, Nigerians don’t give up easily – even in the face of the daily challenges of life. We believe that each day comes with its own promises of survival. This is what caught my eyes in the latest television commercial that 9mobile released recently to launch its Magic Hour promo. The advert tells the story of a man, who is confronted with the daily struggle for survival. It is a story of hope and determination; a compelling one that shows how a brand’s reward to a loyal customer can change his fortune.
Also commendable is the use of music to enhance the key message of the TVC for easy understanding; the fine art of storytelling and the unusual approach of the visual narrative will surely resonate with Nigerians. 9mobile is literally changing the narrative!
For a brand that has gone through a lot in the last one year, 9mobile has once again demonstrated its love and commitment to Nigerians by launching a daily reward promo especially during the first quarter of the year when things are generally tough. This shows that year 2019 will be exciting and fun-filled for subscribers of Nigeria’s fastest and most reliable network, 9mobile, as the network is set to reward her loyal customers with amazing cash prizes in a new mega promo tagged “The Magic Hour promo”.
In this massive magical promotion, there will be something for everyone! From airtime bonuses to smartphones and millions of Naira in cash prizes.
The Magic Hour Promo is not surprising though, 9mobile is known for its commitment to customers and to show how much they are valued, the telco giant offers freebies from time to time. What is however surprising is the fact that despite the challenges the brand has faced in the recent past, it has continued to demonstrate a strong determination to succeed against all odds. From the launch of the brand’s 9nniversary campaign to this Magic Hour promo, no one is left in doubt that 9mobile is back bigger and better.
To participate in the Magic hour promo is super easy, all you need to do is recharge your 9mobile line with N100 and above and you are qualified to win any of the amazing cash prizes 9mobile is rewarding their loyal consumers with.
From all indications, the magic hour promo isn’t just one of those promotions where prizes are not redeemed. 9mobile has an unbroken record of matching words with action when it comes to redeeming its promises to consumers. Over the last decade, the brand has always found innovative ways to connect with its customers, give them superior online experience and reward them for their loyalty.
The Magic Hour promotion is no different; it is already set to reward loyal consumers and give them the best value for their money. This promotion is 9mobile’s way of giving back to customers who have remained loyal throughout the years. No doubt, customers will be excited about all the cash prizes and smartphones they will be receiving.
For the duration of the 1 lucky subscriber will win N250,000 while 5 others will win N50,000 daily, 5 smartphones will be given away weekly, N5million will be up for grabs every month and the ultimate winner will go home with the whopping price of N20 million at the end of the promo.
This is indeed a life-changing opportunity for 9mobile customers. With the winnings, lucky winners can buy a new car, house, get that smartphone, pay school fees, rent a new flat and sort out family expenses. This is truly a promo for the people going by the frequency of winnings – daily, weekly and monthly.
The Magic Hour Promo is part of the 9mobile9nniversary celebration that recognizes and rewards the resilient optimistic spirit of the everyday Nigerian. There will be a brand-new theme song, a video that gives everyone the chance to be a superstar, and the massive promo rewards.
Remember that everyone is a winner in the 9mobile Magic Hour Promotion, all you have to do is recharge N100 and above and get a chance to win millions of Naira in cash prizes while enjoying the better and superior services of 9mobile.

Last month, I was having a discussion with a close friend concerning the gift card trading business in Nigeria and the world generally. We analyzed how gift cards made a lot of income for iTunes and Amazon in the year 2018 and how it will be kind of slipshod not to pay attention to this business. Due to this, we decided to look into the challenges and the how-tos.
After extensive research, we were able to identify the challenges associated with buying and selling gift cards off for cash and how they can be totally avoided, all of which came down to getting the best site to sell your gift cards.

Africa’s first treasury bills investment app, I-invest, has generated about 2 Billion Naira worth of investments from its active users in less than 6 months. The Nigerian company, Parthian Partners, developed the investment app which does not only facilitate investment in treasury bills but also helps to foster a savings culture, has said that it has doubled its one year target in less than 6 months.
Speaking from their Ikoyi Office, Oluseye Olusoga, the CEO of Parthian Partners, said “We are happy that we were able to make this much of an impact at such a short time. This helps us solidify our goal of playing our part in building Nigeria’s economy. The more people invest with the app, the bigger the money market becomes. This he believes is a step in the right direction although It will take some time to make a more significant impact”
Oluseye, CEO Parthian Partners
The app essentially functions as a platform with a structure that allows investors make payments into their virtual wallets either by direct transfers or with the use of a card from where investments can be made. It is important to mention that all the investments are held in safe custody by a licensed securities custodian which effectively protects all investments made by the investors on the app. The app is also under the purview of the Securities & Exchange Commission.
Segun Oluyomi, a user of the app made a comment about the app saying “At a time I was searching for an app I could use to save and I came across I-invest. I found out that you can invest with the app in treasury bills. It helps me save and also gives me interest on my savings. That’s where all my spare cash goes into now.”
As most of us know, treasury bills are government guaranteed debt instruments issued by CBN on their behalf to finance expenditure. The CBN also uses treasury bills to control the money supply and flow in the economy.
Treasury bills are low risks instruments which are backed by the full faith and credit of the Federal Government of Nigeria and offers up to 12% returns or even as high as 14% depending on the tenor when you invest with the app. This is one of the main reasons why Nigerians are using the app, it not only offers risk-free investments but also boasts of competitive returns compare to your traditional savings account.
Currently, the app also boasts of over 60,000 downloads with approximately 30,000 registered users and as promised that in the coming months, the platform is expanding more investment opportunities.
Team, Parthian Partners

Christmas is a season of love, relaxation and companionship. It is a season where everyone expects to see Santa Claus and walk away with a gift. While some might argue that times are hard, however, hence, we have decided to put together a list of 5 simple and affordable yet endearing gift items that you can give to your loved ones this Christmas.
Gift bag or basket of gourmet chocolate truffles or bars – Rarely does anyone say no to a basket of chocolate bars, not even when it’s a special recipe. A pack of chocolate is the easiest way to put a smile on the faces of several people this season and at the slimmest budget. Though within the twinkle of an eye your chocolate can just move from being a bar into liquid, however, the flavour a basket of these bars will add to your holiday cannot be ignored.
Very functional Smartphone – Mobile phones have become man’s best friend and everyone will jump at an opportunity to get a new smartphone or upgrade their existing one. Some cool devices are of high quality yet are very affordable like the TAMBO TA- 55 and TA-50 smartphones. These devices come with Android GO, a big screen, massive battery life, stylish designs, 100 days product replacement promise and 12+1 months warranty. TAMBO range of devices are very affordable and interestingly, they have a device for every category of user.
Indoor Smokeless Barbecue – Barbecuing is fun when you have friends and family around all fighting for a piece of meat. Lol. However, it is even more interesting when you can take the barbecuing indoors without worrying about smokes which appears to be the primary concerns of indoor grills. Help a friend bypass unwanted smoke indoor while getting the same enjoyable experience.
Costume Jewelry or Men’s Grooming Kit – Costume pieces of jewellery are perfect for those friends or family members who like to draw attention with their dashing look at every given opportunity. A “statement necklace” is the best gift to complement their colourful wardrobe and keep them slaying. Similarly, men need to look good also and a simple grooming kit is the first step towards this. The kits are perfect for a close shave or trim for your bearded gang friend or brother.
A 3 Player Chess game – If your friend is a game enthusiast or the type who would rather spend all day inhouse reading than step out to sightsee then you might just want to consider giving him/her a 3 player chess which adds some more complexity to the popular board game and keeps them thinking in 360-degree to outsmart two other people.
These days, it seems as though each time we sleep and wake, a mobile phone brand has released a new device. Understandably, as technological advancement continues to head north, so should the major players in the OEM market, however, recent trends have shown that rather than raise the bar, many of these mobile phone brands are only interested in “blending” or fitting into the existing market clutters that frustrates the end-users.
Since the entry of TAMBO Mobile into the Nigeria mobile phone ecosystem a few months ago, they are fast becoming the mobile phone brand to beat due to their innovative and very competitive products. One of such products is the TA-50 which the brand has introduced to empower entry-level smartphone users with high-end features, considerate speed, more space and a smooth user experience.
When compared to other devices of the same category in the market, TAMBO TA-50 offers considerably more value for money. Powered by a 1.3GHz quad-core processor and Android GO operating system, the device is very responsive and fast. Whether you are a gamer or movie enthusiast, the TA-50 can cater for your video and graphics demands without freezing or “cat-walking”.
Clean, clear and colourful, the TA-50 dons 8MP front and rear cameras with flashlights. Its auto-focus is impressive and the device can capture moving objects with a considerate level of precision.
The TA-50 comes with 1GB RAM and 16GB ROM (expandable up to 64GB) and complemented by Android GO, the device has enough space to house a lot of pictures and apps without you having to resort to always deleting something to add another. It also comes with 4000mAh battery that can deliver over 380hrs standby time and 36+hrs talk time upon a single charge. It has a fingerprint scanner finely positioned at the rear for a fast and more secure use.
TAMBO TA-50 comes in two striking colours, Champagne and Black. Indeed for an entry-level device, the TA-50 is well rounded in terms of speed, camera quality, battery life, storage capacity and even comes with a 100days replacement promise plus 13months warranty.
There are some phones you pick up and drop without remembering them afterwards because they are “the usuals” while there are some others you want to hold, experience and even own because of their uniqueness and the TA-50 Power is one of such phones.
Though it is an entry-level smartphone, however, it ticks several checkboxes for demanding users and if you are considering to replace your smartphone with a budget phone without compromising on the essential features and quality then I recommend you buy the TA-50 Power phone but only after you have read these 7 points.
Design
The body on the TA-50 appeals to aesthetic sensibilities. There’s an intentional feel to the curves and placements on this one that howbeit somehow slippery, it is still very comfortable in the hand and light.
Camera
The camera is an ever-ready feature. Not the typical exaggerated rating some brands slam on their products that produce low-quality pictures, the 8MP front and rear cameras with a flash can deliver a considerately impressive photo.
Software
As an entry-level smartphone, the TA-50 comes with a 1GB of RAM and inbuilt 16GB ROM with an expandable storage capacity of up to 64GB. Pre-installed with Android GO, the device can multitask extensively and run several apps including videos and games at the same time – though, a simplified version of these apps but serves its purpose just fine. It also has an optimized 1.3GHz, quadcore memory speed that is surprisingly very responsive.
Battery
If you are looking for a smartphone with a reliable battery, then the TA-50 is worth experiencing. Unlike other entry-level phones, you will find yourself almost never thinking of using a power-bank. That’s how reliable the battery is.
Android™ Go
TA-50 power smartphone is powered by the Android 8.1 (Go edition) operating system, which is optimized to deliver a number of benefits including:
A smooth and fast experience tailored to devices with 1GB of RAM or less
Enhanced data efficiency
New and re-imagined Google apps for entry-level smartphones including Google Go, Google Assistant and YouTube Go for Android™ 8.1 (Go edition)
Google Assistant
As you may know, smartphones are getting a lot smarter. Just by talking to your phone, you can command it to set a reminder, text your wife or even call your mum. The list is endless and keeps on growing bigger. With the TA-50 Power comes your personal assistant aka the Google Assistant.
Fingerprint
The TA-50 comes with a well-positioned fingerprint scanner at the rear of the device. The fingerprint scanner is super-fast to respond and also a very secure way to shut intruders out of your mobile phone.
Some Nigerian companies will not be struggling with traditional gift items like Hampers, Rice and Oil, Chicken, et.cetera this Christmas. Instead, they will be rewarding employees, clients and customers with corporate gift cards. This information was made known by Africa’s premier gift card shop and aggregator, SureGifts.
“Executive decision makers are choosing gift cards over traditional gift items this year because of its ease of use. No one wants to be burdened with having to haggle prices of rice, oil, chicken, cake, phones and other traditional gift items. Also, price inflation has played a considerable part in the decision to go with gift cards this year. The prices of traditional gift items have gone up and the quality of some of these items declined. However, with gift cards, prices never waver”, said the Managing Director of SureGroup, Omolara Awoyemi.
Omolara further noted why SureGifts serves as the best solution for corporate rewards, loyalty programs and channel incentives.
“Gift cards are cards loaded with specified amounts of cash which are then sent out to celebrants or select individuals as gifts. This helps cut out the stress of figuring out corporate gift ideas and excessive logistic costs.”
In Nigeria, gift cards have also proved useful for many reasons. Its customizability, portability (can also be delivered via e-mail) and limitless access have been some of the reasons why HR managers go for this solution. Also, rather than restricting employees to rice, oil, cakes, etc., gift cards give the freedom of choosing gifts from an infinite range of items from some of the biggest stores across Nigeria including Jumia, SPAR, Samsung, Filmhouse Cinemas, Hubmart, Ruff and Tumble, Game, Startimes, etc. Recipients can even pay their utility bills with them. With gift cards, companies no longer have to worry about the size, colour or how trendy and functional a gift is.
Since SureGifts came into existence 4 years ago, it has grown to include Kenya as one of its locations and has absorbed over 300 organizations into its gifting and rewards platform.
TechCrunch Startup Battlefield Africa 2018 is here! And guess what? It’s being sponsored by Facebook in Lagos, Nigeria.
What is the TechCrunch event about? Simple. The TechCrunch Startup Battlefield Africa is a platform that celebrates African founders and entrepreneurs. Startups compete across three categories: social good; productivity and utility; and gaming and entertainment. It profiles the founders and entrepreneurs leading Africa’s next wave of technology innovation and highlights new ideas, businesses and applications with disruptive potential. Cool, right?
This is the second version of the event in Africa. In fact, according to Facebook’s Head of Developer Programs, Emeka Afigbo, the inaugural event in 2017 was so successful Facebook has decided to return as the headline sponsor this year. “Given our passion for connecting people and helping developers and entrepreneurs to thrive, we can’t wait to see how this year’s entrants are using technology to engage and empower people across the continent.”, he added.
As a prelude to the event, Facebook has a lineup of activities which started on the 6th of December with a Developer Circle Leads Summit and Instagram Inspire Action Lagos – Women and Small Business Event. On the 8th of December, Facebook with Developer Circle Nigeria hosted the Startups and Developers Summit 2018. Today, Facebook is hosting a Digital Pitch Competition and a NG_Hub Start-up Mixer.
On the 11th of December, the TechCrunch Startup Battlefield takes place. Here, startups in Africa will pitch to a live audience of 500 people ranging from VCs, investors, Government officials, developers and startups. Phew! Good luck to all participants! On that same day, there’ll be a Student Hack which gives 50 high school students from Lagos the platform to continue their education and participation in computer science with a Hack-a-Day and other activities that will highlight the impact developers can make in the world using computer science skills.
It’s great to see the steps Facebook is taking to grow Africa’s technology startup ecosystem. Kudos to Facebook and good luck to all participants!
It is undeniable that the future lies with technology. Education, business and entertainment are all leaning more towards a digital solution than ever before, and keeping on par with the most advanced countries in the world likewise means keeping abreast of the incredible, sweeping changes that technology brings. But regardless of the clear benefits that a technological revolution brings, it also is not an easy process and one that must be embraced on many levels.
In Africa, the process of digitization is clear to see. But, although many African cities are rapidly adopting a digital world, other areas lag far behind. In some African countries the technology revolution is virtually non-existent, and Internet access still an entirely foreign concept. But the fact that a technology gap exists means that the digital advancements are more necessary, with the incredible benefits witnessed as they ripple their way across communities that lack infrastructure. In Africa, technology is the key to catching up.
Digital Interconnectivity Is Key
For many, the idea of living without Internet is difficult to even comprehend. So much of the world relies so heavily on Internet functionality these days, that the very notion of not having it defies belief. From banking services and primary communication to a steady flow of entertainment, the Internet is the current lifeblood of the world. In some parts of Africa, however, the Internet is still beyond reach. But this is rapidly changing.
Nairobi, Kenya, is seen by many as the leader of the digital revolution on the African continent. Internet penetration in the country has been so profoundly fast that it is almost unbelievable, with the first mobile phone service provider appearing only in 1999. By 2001 it was reported by the Kenyan Communication Commission that there were 330,000 subscribers. By 2013 that number exceeded 30 million, with overall mobile phone penetration in the country sitting at about 54%
More to the point, the mobile networks in Kenya are the very lifeblood of the economy. Today M-pesa, an SMS-based money transfer system in the country, is the basis of many businesses, with around $28 million transferred on a daily basis. That adds up to a breathtaking $8.8 billion annually. All this, and in 1999 the concept of a mobile phone was still new.
New Solutions And Innovations
Not all parts of Africa have experienced such rapid and notable progress. In other parts of the continent, the technology lag is profound. Many residents still lack access to even the most basic online services. Catching up these areas is a significant challenge, although a challenge that is being met with ingenious, sweeping solutions.
With overall mobile phone penetration in Kenya still sitting at just over half, the parts of the country that lag behind are now at risk of being stuck in a retro bubble. But solutions are already being implemented, allowing for 100% penetration in one fell swoop. Alphabet Inc., a technology innovation company, is working with the Kenyan government on a project called Loon. Using a network of balloon systems, the rural population in Kenya will soon be connected, according to information and technology minister, Joe Mucheru.
Mucheru has stated that contracts are still being worked out, but he hopes the project will result in a country that is 100% connected for the first time. He also stated plainly that connectivity is critical, and those not online are left out.
Other Technology Benefits
Michuki Mwangi, an Internet Society Senior Development Manager, attended the 9th African Peering and Interconnection Forum held in Cape Town. In an interview, he explained that he had purchased his first mobile phone in Kenya, at a massively discounted price. The reason for the discount, he said, was because the retailers operated entirely online, with no store costs of any kind. He went on to state that it was the future of not just the country, but also the entire continent. More than ever before, he said, regulatory environments were driving down costs in Africa, painting a clear path for the future.
Clearly, Mwangi is not the only one to think so, with Microsoft and Amazon recently launching cloud servers in Africa. These cloud-based servers allow online opportunities for African businesses like never before, helping to provide broad business opportunities without the need for business owners to own physical stores. Of course, for these servers to be taken advantage of, connectivity must be far-reaching. Hence the need for smart African cities.
Smart Cities
What precisely a smart city depends on who you’re asking, and which city you’re looking at. There is no one specific definition, other than to say that a city, in this modern world, needs to be connected by more than just roads. The second web of infrastructure must exist, connecting businesses, residents and government facilities in the digital world. This, it is understood, is key to taking residents, and countries, forward into the future.
Again, Nairobi is a city that leads the way in this regard. The city has a strong focus on technology evolution and growth, with a push toward cutting-edge start-ups and businesses focused around rapid technology growth. Universities train students to spot gaps in society and develop technology-based solutions. The rest of Africa would be wise to follow the path Nairobi is headed.
The Ripple Effect Of Technology
Of course, technology advancement is not just about business. All aspects of a modern society are impacted by technological advancements and digitization. Once the infrastructure is in place, all aspects of a society rise to meet the set standard, helping elevate multiple other factors into the future. From education to healthcare, the benefits are far-reaching, and key in bringing Africa onto the same levels as the most developed countries in the world.
A university connected to the information hubs of the world guide students to previously unthought-of employment opportunities, pushing students to not only take advantage of business opportunities but likewise assist in further fuelling the technological revolutions. Likewise, government facilities become more efficient and effective than ever before, allowing entire populations to feel the far-reaching benefits.
Though, the most significant challenges will always be ensuring that no parts of the country are left behind. Hence, the challenges are still significant, with a real risk of letting some residents fall behind, while others speed ahead towards a digital future.
As the first world becomes increasingly digitized, a large number of corporations are looking to Africa for their next expansions. Several other companies are entirely focused on the continent’s growth. All told, the time for a digital revolution in the cradle of humankind is now.
Politicians are supporting the idea too. Presidents Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, and Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, for example, have both encouraged technological development, recognizing the substantial economic and other benefits it could bring.
Africa’s Digital Potential
In many ways, what makes the continent so perfect for new technology is countries’ historic lack of infrastructure. This is seen in the way that transferring money via mobile phones took off almost 15 years ago, with M-PESA allowing money to be sent from phone to phone years before Venmo was available.
When more than 80% of Africans’ mobile telephones but only about 28% have a bank account, this solution is simple and elegant. The innovative thinking required is also clearly illustrated. Internet use is up by an average of 20% across the continent, according to the “Digital in 2018” report by Hootsuite and We Are Social.
This is the highest rate of Internet penetration in the world, but it is still predominantly because of mobile technology. Many people don’t have the money to buy desktop computers, but they can afford mobile phones quite easily. The business models that worked in Silicon Valley, therefore, might not be as successful. Developers need to consider the particular socio-economic and other factors of each country and create technology that meets its needs.
Apps for education, agriculture, and business could drive serious political, social and economic growth. At the same time, greater connectivity and access to resources will put African designers and innovators on equal footing with their first world counterparts, and allow them to compete on a global stage. Clearly, when viewed from any angle, the continent’s technology scene is on the verge of exploding.
The Importance of Tech Hubs
Start-ups have always been essential to the digital world. Start-up ecosystems, or networks of start-ups and their support structures, interact with each other to develop the existing companies and create new ones. Tech hubs, the incubators, accelerators and collaborative spaces that foster the startups, are thus quite obviously intrinsic to these ecosystems.
So we know the hubs are important, and the number of these centers in Africa jumped from 314 in 2016, to 442 in 2018. The interest in the continent’s digital advancement is clearly reflected in these figures, and it is coming from everywhere.
Executives from Google, Facebook and Alibaba have visited various countries to launch products and scout for opportunities, while local tech hubs are also driving the industry. Earlier in 2018, Google opened its first accelerator outside of the United States, Launchpad Africa, in Lagos. The support and mentorship will be similar to what is offered in Silicon Valley, modified to cater to the African context.
Senegal, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Uganda, and Zimbabwe have all seen more local tech hubs launched over the past two years, while the highest growth was seen in Nigeria. Here, the number shot up from 23 in 2016 to 55 in 2018. This puts the country on par with South Africa, which currently has 59 active hubs. There’s a lot of growth overall, but most of it is concentrated in South Africa, Nigeria, Egypt, Kenya, and Morocco.
To take a closer look at some of the accelerators and incubators in these African Silicon Valleys, keep reading.

The Co-Creation hub is in Lagos, where it holds events that have come to be known as Tech-Ins. Software designers come together over two days and work to create mobile-and web-based solutions to Nigeria’s social challenges.
The organization has also partnered with Facebook since May 2018, after Mark Zuckerberg himself visited the premises. This is the social media platform’s first African collaborative space, intended to help individuals learn and exchange ideas. Seven more are to be rolled out across Nigeria, and will also be connected to existing local hubs.

The company is both an accelerator and a seed money investor and has invested a total of $50 million in startups across the MENA (the Middle East and North Africa) region over the past seven years.
More than 180 portfolio companies, 100 corporate and governmental partners and 400 local and international coaches and mentors are affiliated with Flat6Labs. The population of Egypt, young and tech-mined, is considered by many to be its most excellent resource, and Business Development Manager Nour Ahmadein says the massive pool of talented developers is the best part of doing business in Cairo.
Kenya: Nairobi Garage
In the capital city of Kenya, Nairobi Garage offers fast Internet speeds and access to reliable electricity, both of which can be challenges in the country. The center also holds tech-based events, workshops, and conferences to help entrepreneurs gain new skills and connections.
Garages have also been established in Cape Town and Lagos, where similar activities drive innovation and business growth. Besides, they have funded several projects. The parent company describes its vision as Africa becoming a technology powerhouse.
Morocco: New Work Labs
New Work Labs provides an important co-working space for Morocco’s technology entrepreneurs. They also offer programmes and workshops and act as a start-up accelerator. Insiders predict that the number of hubs in the country will also grow exponentially in the next few years, thanks to the active efforts of local authorities and investors. An accurate representation of what is happening in the rest of Africa, Morocco’s tech start-ups are also closely linked with mobile operators.

The duo of TECNO Camon 11 and Camon 11 Pro are among the impressive series of smartphones, released by TECNO this year. The Camon 11 Pro comes as a better and upgraded version of its predecessor – the recently launched Camon 11.
While both devices share many similarities, the newer model features some improvements as regards chipset, camera setup, storage configurations, and others. With such advanced offerings in the TECNO Camon 11 Pro, it is no doubt more expensive than the Camon 11.
In the heart of this review, I will be unboxing a brand new TECNO Camon 11 Pro. Let me cut to the chase and start the review with gusto:
Camon 11 Pro Unboxing
This cell phone is enclosed in a rectangular box that shows an esthetic schematic design of the device, along with the model name.
Taking a look at the upper part of the box, you will see the data offers from MTN and 9mobile, two among the leading network providers in this country. In one of the offers, there is a 100 per cent data bonus from MTN on the mobile phone and another 1.5GB free data on SIM activation as well as 100 per cent data bonus from 9mobile on every data purchase made within the first 6 months.
After removing the box, the pleasant look of the phone greets you. If you check its top section, you will see a sticker that lists the critical specifications of the smartphone.
Camon 11 Pro Key Specs and Features
6.2-inch HD+ Display
Android 8.1 Oreo
2.0GHz Octa-Core MT6762 Helio P22 CPU
6GB RAM, 64GB ROM
16 + 5 Megapixel dual Rear Camera with quad-LED flash
24 megapixel front Camera with LED flash
The fingerprint sensor, Face ID
3750mAh battery
When you take the phone out of the box, you will see a smaller box containing items, such as the back cover, user manuals, warranty card, the SIM Ejector tool, and Boom Play.
Like the majority of smartphones produced by the TECNO brand, you need not stew over the possibility of any of the accessories missing. After purchasing the product, you will get the full package comprising all the necessary accessories.
1 Camon 11 Pro device
A user manual
SIM Ejector Tool
Warranty Card
1 USB 2.0 Cable
3-pin wall adapter charger
1 phone case
Boom play Music card
1 pair of earphones
It has an exquisite pair of earphones
The Camon 11 Pro packs a non-removable 3750m-Ah battery and a charger with fast charging support.
Looking at the picture above, you can see that TECNO has ditched the regular pouch on their mobile devices in the Camon family as this Camon 11 Pro’s pouch looks much better compared to what we are used to.
Camon 11 Pro Unboxing — DESIGN
Concerning the design, the phone’s aesthetical and architectural makeup readily shows it is a lookalike of the Camon 11. They both come with the same dimension and aspect ratio.
The Camon 11 Pro has a glossy and reflective body with its volume adjustment buttons and power/lock button on the right-hand side. Turning towards the left-hand side, you will see its SIM card and micro SD card slots. The loudspeaker grills, the micro USB port, and 3.5mm headphone jack sit at the bottom.
As can be seen in a number of latest releases from this phone maker, there is a shift in design which can be noticed at top of the device: The 3.5mm audio jack has been moved to a different section, which is at the bottom of the mobile phone. This is a vantage position for the jack as you can now put your smartphone in your pocket with ease while listening to music.
In the camera department, its 16+5 MP dual rear camera setup can be seen slightly above the quad-LED flash. Its rear-mounted fingerprint sensor lies a few inches away from the quad-flash. At the front section, there is a 24-megapixel selfie snapper with LED flash.
Camon 11 Pro Unboxing — Display
As regards the display, the TECNO Camon 11 Pro sports a massive 6.2-inch Super FullView IPS LCD panel that offers an HD+ resolution of 1500 by 720 pixels. Just like the smaller Camon 11, this upgraded model also comes with the same screen-to-body ratio of 87.5% and a rectangular notch at the top part of its screen display.
It promises the best of colours with its aspect ratio of 19:9 and brightness of 500 nits. The TECNO Camon 11 Pro, equipped with an octa-core MediaTek Helio P22, 6GB of RAM, 64GB ROM (expandable up to 256 via microSD card), and a strong 3750-mAh battery, should offer a remarkable performance. The Camon 11 Pro is now available in the market at a rate price of N76,000.

Everyone knows at least something about online gambling opportunities as these are everywhere on the Internet. However, the thing that has been overtaking the whole gambling industry from the beginning of the 2000s were social casinos as we know them. Social casino or gambling is the whole new concept of entertaining and socializing within the same online platform meaning that people can spend fun time together in virtual space.
Therefore, if you are interested in the whole concept of this kind of gambling, we have prepared a few clarifications for you to better understand it. First and foremost, social gambling shall be understood as nothing but gambling online with a unique opportunity to engage with friends and spend some pleasant time with other people online. Secondly, this is a huge industry which is expected to grow within the next decade and therefore requires new poker programs heroes to conquer it.
Main Features Of Modern Social Gambling
When talking about the unique features of this particular kind of gambling it is important to mention that people are generally more loyal to it than other gaming solutions. 60% of single-payment social players continue to play the game after their one-time payment. For other online games, on the other hand, a mere 7% of one-time players continue to play after their initial deposit amount is gone.
Here are some other exciting features of the social casino industry and its development in recent years:
people come here to chill out: while traditional casinos are usually visited with the desire to win money, social ones are usually used to relax, unwind and use quality time with friends. Given the incredible convenience and their presence on a variety of online platforms, it is no wonder people wish to chill out using these tools. As life gets more intense and the Internet more popular, this industry will only grow;
14% of users spend at least 1 hour per day: since these games are easy to access in the digital space, once a person gets there it is rather difficult to leave the media without playing at least one game. The better the graphics and plots, the longer people tend to stay on these gambling platforms;
higher motivation to play: as compared with real gambling, in this particular type it is not money or some kind of gain, but rather fun and the opportunity to spend time with friends or relatives.
To wrap things up, if you as an entrepreneur in the online gambling industry or even not an adjacent one would like to have an exciting experience developing a game, there are some experienced developers which would help you with that. The only thing to understand is that the industry is worth investing in.

It’s almost the end of the year and the big news is TECNO Mobile is set to launch an addition to its camera-centric CAMON smartphone series. If this news is anything to go by, the phone giant will be dabbling into the Artificial Intelligence space as it’s set to unveil its first ever AI camera smartphone. If you are a selfie lover, photography enthusiast or tech-savvy individual, then this is information you will find insightful.
Like its predecessors, the new CAMON is set to launch with higher pixels, powerful sensors, and advanced autofocus. These features will make it perform exceptionally well as far as taking selfie-shots in bright and low-light scenarios is concerned. Although these features are amazing, we are specifically looking forward to the AI feature and we can tell it means more juice is offered to the photographic ability of the Camon Series.
With a rumored release date of November 19, the new CAMONis suspected to come with a 24MP AI selfie camera with adjustable flashlights. However, we are looking forward to seeing how this will push forward the ability if the most popular Android Smartphone camera in Africa.
Talking about display and design, we expect the new CAMON to be slicker and slimmer, perhaps with a notch. Will the fingerprint be on the screen, behind or beside the phone? We can’t wait.
The device will most likely come with AndroidTM 8.1 (Go edition) operating system and the google assistant, which means users can give instructions to the phone without having to touch it.
TECNO smartphones are noted for having high-end features without the high-end price, therefore the new CAMON is expected to be made available at a value-friendly price tag.
While we anticipate the release of this smartphone, this is the year we are seeing TECNO launch three different CAMON devices. We’ve had the Camon CM, Camon X and now another Camon. What will it be called? Camon X1?
The Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE), a global network of organizations which support small and growing businesses in emerging markets, through the support of DFID recently launched the entrepreneurial ecosystem snapshots of Ibadan and Port Harcourt, Nigeria. These reports expand on the study of the entrepreneurial landscape of Nigeria, of which Abuja and Lagos snapshots have been previously launched. Unlike other nations which ANDE studies using a country-wide approach, Nigeria is mostly heterogeneous, hence the need for a city-by-city study.
The ANDE entrepreneurial ecosystem snapshot aims to identify organizations that actively support entrepreneurs and the kind of support they provide in specific cities. These organizations include investors, capacity development providers, business development support providers, professional service providers, academic institutions, corporate foundations, media organizations, financial institutions, associations, government agencies, and others.
Ibadan and Port Harcourt are cities in Nigeria with great entrepreneurial potential and which are receiving increasing local and international attention. The study reveals that the top focus is for entrepreneurial support stakeholders for Ibadan and Port Harcourt is youth entrepreneurship. However, while stakeholders in Port Harcourt focus more on the information and communication sector, stakeholders in Ibadan are sector agnostic.
The study also reveals challenges that hinder the growth of the entrepreneurial ecosystem in these cities. These include: lack of access to finance, talent migration (also referred to as brain drain) due to perceived lack of opportunities, mono-sectoral concentration and dependency on oil and gas, disconnect between investors and the reality of the ecosystem etc.
These snapshots will find relevance to entrepreneurs as well as entrepreneurial support organizations located in these cities as well as those with interest in these cities.
This report which will also be made available on ANDE’s entrepreneurial ecosystem portal also features the gaps, opportunities, and recommendations for increased entrepreneurial development in these cities. More information is available on ecosystems.andeglobal.org.
