  • Introducing Nigeria’s First Online Livestock Market – Livestock247.com

Introducing Nigeria’s First Online Livestock Market – Livestock247.com

The official launch of the first ever indigenous tech-based online livestock company held Tuesday, the 6th of November 2018, at the Sheba Event Centre, Lagos, drawing positive appraisals from a host of stakeholders in the Nigerian Livestock market who graced the occasion.

The purpose of this enterprise, according to its innovators, is to ease the flow of trading in livestock while at the same time guaranteeing a healthy supply of beef to the Nigerian consumers. It is also intended to provide a viable interface for livestock buyers, sellers, ranchers, livestock merchants, Veterinary professionals, Haulage/Logistics companies, as well as financial service providers, to enable commerce of livestock.

In her welcome address, the Chairman of Livestock247.com, Amina Oyagbola, stated that “Livestock247.com is an online platform that will enable investors, owners, and farmers of livestock to be readily matched with buyers and consumers of livestock anywhere in the country. By this, we have created a logistical value chain for the benefit of all stakeholders in this huge industry”.

In the same vein, the Chief Executive Officer of Livestock247.com, Ibrahim Maigari, reiterated that the company was borne out of the need to mitigate the spread of zoonotic diseases in the Nigerian Cattle/Beef market through the provision of fit-for slaughter & traceable livestock directly to your doorstep.

The CEO pointed out that Nigeria could not export beef legally due to lack of functional animal identification and traceability system as obtainable in other countries.

With the introduction of Livestock247.com, merchants now have the advantage of listing livestock for sale to customers anywhere in Nigeria. Customers also have the opportunity to buy livestock that meets their specific requirements from the comfort of their homes.

Speaking further, Maigari said, “The technology deployed on Livestock247.com is multi-dimensional and will impact development within the livestock sector, create more jobs and trigger growth of the economy. To enhance our customer experience we have built a Livestock247 app which is available for download on Google playstore & Apple Store.

For quality health service delivery to its clients, Livestock247.com has partnered with qualified Veterinary doctors who are certified by the Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN) and the Nigerian Institute of Animal Science (NIAS) to ensure that all animals undergo veterinary assessments to ensure fit-for slaughter livestock for customers.

Furthermore, livestock sold on the platform are traceable with biodegradable microchips ensuring that you get the exact livestock purchased, delivered directly to your requested location, effectively cutting out the hassles of dealing with middlemen.

  • KITE@Yaba, a Complete ICT Cluster and Visioning Workshop

The use of digital technology to create new solutions that drive economic growth is on the rise in Nigeria. Much of this growth can be attributed to the emergence of Lagos State as a regional hub for technology-driven innovation, catalyzed by bold and revolutionary ICT initiatives of the Lagos State Government.  The need to optimize this potential for digital technology to drive economic transformation in the State for the benefit of the entire country has birthed KITE@Yaba, a project aimed at transforming the Yaba technology cluster into a leading source of technology innovation. KITE which stands for “Knowledge, Innovation, Technology, and Entrepreneurship” seeks to provide an enabling environment that will facilitate and support the development of a technology and innovation ecosystem within the Yaba District (and its surrounding environs) of Lagos.

The project kicked off earlier this year with the establishment of the Project Steering Committee (PSC). The PSC is a 6-member committee comprising representatives from three Lagos State ministries namely Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment and the Ministry of Physical Planning & Urban Development as well as three representatives from the private sector. To support the Project Steering Committee, a consortium of notable technology industry experts was inaugurated as the Industry Advisory Board (IAB) in June 2018. The IAB which includes organizations like Google, Microsoft, MainOne, Andela, General Electric (GE), CcHub, Flutterwave, University of Lagos, Lagos State University and Ibile Broadband, will in the coming months provide project direction while ensuring the project focus areas are realized. The focus is on improving the enabling environment in the areas of Access to Funding; Access to Market and Demand; Infrastructure; Policy Regulation & Governance; R&D; Talent; Skills & Education; Networks & Collaboration; Advocacy & Marketing; and Strategic Partnerships.

The Lagos State Government is proud to announce the completion of the ICT Cluster Visioning Workshop for the KITE@Yaba project which recently took place at the Lagos Chambers of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) Conference and Exhibition Centre, 10 Nurudeen Olowopopo Way, Alausa, Ikeja.  The workshop, facilitated by Accenture, was aimed at the attendees jointly setting a vision that will create the enabling environment to facilitate, support and aid the development of a technology and innovation cluster ecosystem within the Yaba District (and surrounding environs) of the Lagos metropolis. Members of the Project Steering Committee (PSC), the Industry Advisory Board (IAB) and the recently inaugurated Policy Enablement Committee (PEC) were in attend

The workshop kicked-off with opening remarks delivered by one of the Project Steering Committee co-chair, Mr Hakeem Fahm (Honourable Commissioner for Lagos State Ministry of Science and Technology) who highlighted that “the involvement of multiple private and public sector stakeholders in the visioning session will lay the foundation for successful partnerships that will accelerate the development of a technology and innovation cluster within the Yaba District and enable wealth creation, employment growth, and economic development through Knowledge, Innovation, Technology, and Entrepreneurship”.  Dr. Omobola Johnson (PSC co-chair and former Minister for Communication & Technology) in her address added that “it was important to create a vision influenced and supported by the experiences of the project stakeholders as a way of taking future ownership of the project”. The workshop facilitator, Stephen Zoegall (Accenture’s Digital Strategy Manager) while setting the stage for the workshop expressed that “KITE@Yaba can send ripple effects of enhanced innovation, investment, and education throughout Nigeria and the broader region and like all ICT clusters, it will be successful only to the extent the public-private partnerships are successful”.

The participants were guided during the various workshop activities by three main questions – (1) Why is Yaba a focus area? (2) What needs to be provided for an enabling environment? and (3) How will a dedicated team foster partnership growth while managing services and offerings that will enable a work and play environment? These activities elicited invaluable contributions from the attendees during the discovery session. The Chief Executive Officer of IBILE Holdings Limited observed that “the cluster must work collaboratively by creating symbiotic relationships with its stakeholders and partners such that as it receives knowledge and shares this invaluable knowledge generated with start-ups and other technology businesses in the cluster. The Head, Regulatory Services of MainOne who also highlighted the cluster’s importance in reviewing and designing the right digital skills curricula required by the ICT industry over the next 10 years in partnership with the private sector which can subsequently be applied to talent development  thus providing the much-needed technological manpower from which businesses within and outside the cluster can employ the best candidates in advancing the growth of the digital ecosystem”

The workshop closed on a high note with the co-chairs of the Project Steering Committee (PSC) affirming in their closing remarks that the coming months will further attest to the growing need for continued transformation within the ICT sector which the KITE@Yaba project is positioned to address sustainably.

So, for the new Pouvour to spot a 16MP rear camera and an 8MP selfie shooter shouldn’t be shocking, but what should be considered news is that a dual tone supports the rear camera LED flash for preferred lighting effects even in dim light scenarios- that’s a perfect addition.

  • 5 Reasons Why You Would Like The iPhone 8

The iPhone 8 is among the newest iPhone models, but the unveiling of the iPhone X considerably overshadowed its September 2017 release. The iPhone 8 turned out to be an underrated phone, as its variety of features make it an excellent choice for all kinds of buyers. Find out why you too should consider buying the iPhone 8 and find the most affordable iPhone 8 offers on Jiji.

    Performance

On the first glance, the performance specs of the iPhone 8 are pretty much average. However, even though iPhone specs never look particularly good on paper, it’s a different story once the iPhone is finally in your hands. The iPhone 8 comes with the A11 Bionic chip, which makes it one of the fastest mobile devices of the year. Every performance feature of the iPhone 8 has been improved over its predecessors, and the processor now uses less energy, saving your battery life.

    Storage

Apple has always been ahead of most of the competition when it comes to storage space, but with the latest generation of the iPhone, the company outdid themselves. There are two versions of the iPhone available: a 64GB and 256GB iPhone 8. If you’re mostly listening to music and watching videos online, 64GB should be more than enough, but even if you love to download hundreds of songs for future listening sessions, 256GB of storage will completely satisfy your needs.

    Design

Even diehard Android fans won’t argue with the fact that Apple makes some of the best-looking smartphones in the market. Every iPhone is a masterpiece, but it’s especially true for the iPhone 8. For the first time in iPhone’s history, Apple decided to use glass in the design of the phone’s body. The result is a stunning device that is made of exceptionally durable glass that can sustain most types of damage.

    Water resistance

More and more phones today come with water resistance functionality, but iPhone was among the first models to feature water resistance characteristics and continues to remain great at it. The iPhone 8 can function up to 30 minutes under 1.5 meters of water, which is pretty decent for a 2017 mobile phone.

    Price

iPhones have never been budget devices, but if you’re choosing between the iPhone 8 and the iPhone X, the iPhone 8 is a much smarter choice. With the iPhone 8 you get the same storage, RAM, camera, and other specs hundreds of dollars cheaper than the iPhone X. If you’re upgrading from an older version of the iPhone and don’t want to drop a fortune on your new phone, go for the iPhone 8.

(Image: Quidax CEO – Buchi Okoro speaking at the Abuja Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence Roundtable on Friday 19th October 2018)

At the recently concluded Abuja Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence Roundtable (ABAR), which held on the 19th and 20th of October, Quidax, a Europe-based cryptocurrency exchange, called on the event’s attendees to position themselves to take advantage of the bounty the world blockchain and AI promises.

In his presentation, Buchi Okoro, CEO at Quidax, spoke about the importance of understanding cryptocurrencies as investors and business executives as it is the currency of the future.

According to Buchi, Quidax had been set up to enable people easily buy and sell cryptocurrencies with their local currencies with the higher goal of providing liquidity and tools to power cross-border remittance to and from emerging markets.

Quoting an email newsletter from renowned businessman and author, Robert Kiyosaki, Buchi stated that “Crypto is the future. It’s not a matter of “If” crypto will take down the entire financial world, it’s just a question of “when.”

Buchi stated that one of their objectives at Quidax was to increase the level of understanding about cryptocurrency and blockchain in Nigeria, shedding light on why they were glad to be a part of the event.

“We have been proud to partner with the organizers of Abuja Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence Roundtable and will ensure that we continue to develop and seek new partnerships that will increase the understanding of cryptocurrency and blockchain in Nigeria” he added.

In his conclusion, Buchi stated that there is a need for regulations to bring sanity to the space and protect the general populace but in the absence of that Quidax has taken steps as a responsible corporate citizen to protect its users and increase the level of awareness about cryptocurrencies.

The roundtable brought together players in Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence, the banking sector, industry players and government functionaries. • Challenges of E-commerce Business in Nigeria – The Gift Card Ordeal

Running an e-commerce business in Nigeria can be a gruesome task. Business owners will boldly say “it’s not an all-comers job”. This article shall be touching on the challenges of running an e-commerce business in Nigeria and how it has been for startups in the gift card business.

This is a sector that is fast growing the world over, and in Nigeria, the difference is not the case as we have quite a good number of e-commerce platforms already established in Nigeria, i.e. Patricia, Konga, Jumia, Payporte, etc… thus we shall be focusing on the challenges of running an e-commerce business in Nigeria.

If you are thinking of getting into this space in Nigeria then you really should consider reading this first to prepare your mind before you make up your mind. The core of the challenges faced by e-commerce businesses in Nigeria is pretty standard. I won’t mention funding as that is a standard challenge for any business.

The challenges include but are not limited to:
    1. Trust
    2. Marketing
    3. Technology
    4. Payment
    5. Product Sourcing

Let’s break them down in more details:
    1. Trust – Nigeria is currently fighting corruption, and the issue of online scams remains a big factor, hence, trading online becomes a misrepresentation. A place where phishing is regular, individuals are distrustful about listing their private information online. Some customers are yet to figure out how they can trade online, while others are concerned about being scammed, and the lack of trust from Nigerian consumers is a huge hindrance for e-commerce business in Nigeria.

    2. Marketing – Most of the players in the space are relative newcomers, they are unknown. To create awareness in a new market, especially the gift card market, you need to market your brand and your offering to consumers in a way that has never been done before; we can see an example of this where Payporte single-handedly sponsored Big Brother. The cost to do this for small players can be very prohibitive. E-commerce players need to be ready to be in it for the long haul as the market isn’t matured enough for them. One big mistake many of the players make is thinking online advertising is all that’s needed.

    3. Technology – Apparently technology remains a big issue these days. Everyone uses the same underlying technology. While not a problem, every site looks just like the other and user experience is just not top notch. You will know what I am talking about if you have shopped on some international sites. Building an e-commerce site on WordPress and installing plugins is excellent for a start but several of the biggest players in the world develop their proprietary platforms and continue to tweak it based on user feedback. For a stable hosting requirement your best bet is a scalable host like AWS and Azure.

    4. Payment – This one na die. Patricia.com.ng probably invented instant payment here in Nigeria. They had to. Nigerians don’t trust online sites with their gift cards and cryptos. This model is extremely tough to sustain. It’s costly to maintain too but they made it work. This is an advantage they have over others in the industry. The experience of paying online and quickly can be very frustrating, as the process is not a stable one, especially the banks. The online payment space is improving, I must confess, with several new players getting involved. Interswitch now faces fierce competition from Unified Payment, Paga, Eyowo, PayStack, SimplePay, CashEnvoy, and VoguePay.

    5. Product Sourcing – How do e-commerce players get their products? Do they get them directly from the manufacturers, a major distributor or in most cases do they just rely on a seller in the iTunes store for example? Many players don’t have a reliable source of getting the right cards/products at a reasonable rate and on time.

In spite of the difficulties and challenges facing e-commerce businesses in Nigeria, especially regarding gift cards trade and cryptocurrencies, one stand-out company that deserves a mention in this regard is Patricia. They have in one year penetrated the gift cards market and defied the odds of trust with the invention of quick and instants payment system, technology and network-which is the major bane of communication in Nigeria-has also been defied.

For e-commerce businesses to thrive in Nigeria, relevant government agencies need to put in place policies and infrastructure that will enhance the growth of the sector as the sector is the future of business in the continent.

  • We all are Victims if we are not # U9ited against Cyberbullying

Man has undoubtedly become a victim of his creation and this is a sad reality. The internet is a double edge sword in our society and the extent to which it can make or mar its users cannot be overlooked. On the one hand, it is a fantastic innovation that allows one source for information, shop and even locates a long-lost friend or family. On the other, its potential to cause damage is almost proportional to its usefulness. Cyber-bullying is a scourge that is more dangerous than we think, what is more, the anonymity of the internet tends to offer a security blanket for the bully while heightening anxiety for the victim.

It is no longer news that bullies have begun to transfer their emotional weakness to stronger Nigerians calling them out on social media making a mess of their image and personality. This, however, explains why leading telecommunication brand 9mobile has joined forces with Nigeria’s leading tech platform Askifa.ng to sanitize the Nigerian Social Media space from cyber-bullies.

Did you know that Google Trends data has indicated that much attention has been placed on cyberbullying than ever before? In recent times, more people have searched the word “cyberbullying” than they have done in the past.

Also, a research presented at the 2017 Paediatric Academic Societies Meeting indicated that more children and teenagers were reported to have attempted suicide due to a spike in the number of cyber-bullying activities in 2015 alone.

Speaking at the commencement of the campaign 9mobile’s Sowari Akosionu mentioned that:

Most Nigerians may say Cyber-bullying is not a Nigerian thing, but the conversation is getting wider. You would agree that the reactions of bullies behind their computers and smartphones have broken the faith most people have in themselves when they post things on Social Media and that is what we want to correct.

    She also added that:

We want an environment where people understand that their words are sharp, their words can destroy. We want people to know that a simple exchange of kind words on a post could change the conversation, same way hurtful words can break the minds of the victim.

Ifedayo Oladeinde from Askifa.ng on his part expressed his excitement at being a part of such a movement. He, however, stressed that:

Nigerians have held on to the pseudo-reality of freedom of expression to taunt, hurt and break people on Social Media, but together we can make a cleaner and safer Social media space for the everyday Nigerian. Together we can prove that we are the stronger ones and the bullies are nothing but weaklings who need help.

He went on to urge Nigerians to be a part of the movement:

We can change the narrative. We can begin to tell our stories to inspire others and make them realise that they are never victims until they surrender their willpower to these bullies. We can change things by just telling our stories. We can heal our scars by letting the world feel the truth.

Feel free to become a giant now. You can join the conversation using these hashtags on your social media platforms

  • The Future Of Work – Now a Reality at Diamond Bank.

Using Robotics and Artificial Intelligence to deliver superior customer experience.

    Photo: Kelechi Amadi-Obi

In today’s competitive business landscape, digital transformation is imperative for banks to realise enhanced customer value and unleash significant bottom-line improvement.

At Diamond Bank, we stand at the forefront of driving customer experience through technology innovation.  We have taken bold innovative steps, such as our enhanced mobile banking app experience, and our online chat-bot Ada, which has seen continued growth in use by our customers across board.

In consideration of our customer’s needs, we continuously seek ways to improve overall customer experience by looking at critical issues that impact our customers, and seeking digital solutions to enable a more efficient customer experience.  For this case study, we have considered a pressing issue related to dispute resolution and the tangible value digital has helped deliver (i.e. efficiencies and cost-to-serve).

    CHALLENGE

Every customer can relate to the frustrating experience of waiting for retail vendors to complete a transaction using multiple POS machines and blaming the network/system which after failing, results in a trip to the closest ATM fraught with its own challenges and potentially failed transactions. Nothing worse than having your funds finally ‘deducted’ from your account with no cash in hand to show for it and then beginning the odyssey of resolving the failed transaction with your bank, all the while not resolving the initial need for the transaction. This leads to deep discontent and customer dissatisfaction thus reliability and guaranteeing a satisfying customer experience is critical, extending to the need for a streamlined, efficient transaction dispute process.

The use and dependencies on ATM and POS imply the need for reliability.  The complex nature of banking systems, which the customer will never see, implies that we must maintain optimal customer experience in the midst of failed ATM or POS transactions. The dispute process must be seamless and efficient to guarantee the right customer experience.  ATM and POS disputes for our VISA and BETA cards customers for local transactions take on average 3 – 5 days to resolve (and this is prevalent across the banking industry in Nigeria). The reality is clear – this deprives our customers of often-essential funds for that duration leading to discontent and dissatisfaction – our shared perspective is that it is unacceptable to how we bank our customers’ lifestyle. Such negative experiences also serve to break down the level of trust our customers have in electronic channels and the attendant benefits. For a critical channel in the transaction value chain, dispute resolution enabled through automation becomes imperative.

Reflecting on the new reality that RPA has enabled, Uzoma Dozie, Chief Executive Officer stated that: “When my team advised that they were looking into Robotic Process Automation with Deloitte, I was excited to see what results we could derive from that partnership. In under 2 months, we have been able to develop a robotic solution that successfully engages over six (6) different system platforms within and outside the bank to solve a pressing customer need – ATM and POS dispute resolution.  We have achieved a proven reduction of over 400% in the resolution time for a single dispute, and more than 300% reduction in backlog resolution turn-around time. I am now even more excited for what is in store for the Bank and its customers through RPA solutions.”

    APPROACH

To address this issue, we collaborated with Deloitte to assess the viability of assisted intelligence for efficiency improvement to the accuracy of process outcomes (a combination of Robotics Process Automation, Data and Business Logic) to help automate the tedious dispute resolution process.

We used Robotics Process Automation (RPA) to prove this concept over a 6-week period working with the team of RPA developers from Deloitte right here in Nigeria. The team utilised an agile approach executed in a series of three (3) agile sprints, working closely with our business and technical specialists to converge with speed on the optimum solution iteratively.

Diamond Bank has leapfrogged into the future of work. Rob Giles, Head, Retail Banking: “We’re really excited by the possibilities that Robotic Process Engineering presents. As Nigeria’s fastest growing and leading retail bank it is important for us to deliver predictable and consistently positive experiences for our customers.  RPA has cut down the time it takes to solve customers’ requests and it has created more time for our people to focus on creative activities and engaging with our customers. In collaboration with Deloitte, we have proven that RPA works and it delivers positive outcomes for customers, colleagues and bottom-line performance.”

    SOLUTION

The solution was developed on the UiPath™ Enterprise RPA Platform. The RPA platform engaged multiple systems through this process, namely our core banking system, our Customer Relationship Management (CRM) solution, Dispute Management System (DMS), BankOne, Extra switch and Base II.

On the new dawn for seamless banking transactions Alex Alozie, Head, Operations added that: “The complexity of the RPA solution developed is first of its kind in the Nigerian banking industry.  The system not only manages the operational interface between the platforms involved in the ATM/POS dispute and settlement, it also goes as far as posting the required chargebacks/ transaction  into our core banking application so the customer automatically receives value – THIS IS REVOLUTIONARY!!! .”

On execution, the robot was able to perform the following tasks without human intervention and at orders of magnitude faster than a human operator could, without error, slowing down or getting fatigued:

    1. The bot logged into the Customer Relationship Management (CRM) platform to view open cases assigned to it.
    2. The bot read all the cases, iterated through the list to investigate the root cause of the cases using a set of rules and a suite of logic to determine valid, invalid cases and cases requiring further investigation.
    3. Using the set of rules and logic, the bot had developed capabilities to access the switching dispute platforms and dynamically integrate with our core banking application to investigate dispute transactions ensuring that there was no duplication of resolution.
    4. Once the investigation proved a dispute was a valid case, the bot proceeded to the respective switch and logged a chargeback.
    5. Finally, the bot went back to the case on CRM and closed the case with a resolution message communicated to the customer.
    6. The bot was also able to check for invalid cases, return these to the initiator or escalate on the CRM platform for proper checks to avoid unnecessary re-work.
    7. In scenarios where the Robot was unable to resolve the dispute automatically, the solution escalated to a Diamond Bank Supervisor for further action.

    IMPACT & BENEFIT

During the course of the exercise, over a thousand cases were treated and automatically resolved – demonstrating rapidity and efficacy with a lens on reducing cost-to-serve.  We were able to realise a few benefits not limited to the following:

    • A 300% reduction in turn-around-time (3-5 days’ backlog of cases handled in less than 24hours)
    • 400% reduction in average handling time of a single dispute resolution (the Bot processes cases in average time of 1-2mins which is on the average five (5) times faster than a human (i.e. 6-10mins).
    • We saw an immediate increase in the capacity of the team to handle more value-adding tasks with productivity gains of up to 60% – this is helping us re-define the future of work at Diamond Bank.

Agility, responsiveness and flexibility have come alive in serving customers.  Sampson Aneke, Head, Transaction and Electronic Banking concluded by saying: “This development is truly exciting! An investment that pays for itself in terms of reduced cost of managing the resolution process, and value from a return on customer satisfaction. Working with Deloitte and our in-house team of “robot farmers”, we are cultivating the field of Robotic Process Automation to unlock significant values in several critical use cases.

Deloitte’s focus on driving digital in Nigeria aligns to its purpose of making an impact that matters.  Simply put, there are clear and tangible financial impacts to rolling out robotics. Nigerian Banks should leverage robotics to drive more efficiency in banking operations, reduce cost-to-serve and more importantly scale robotics innovation to enhance their customers’ journey and experience. On the back of Diamond Bank’s progressive approach towards the adoption of digital enablement in the dispute resolution space, Yemi Saka, Consulting & Digital Leader (Deloitte West Africa) illustrates that Robotic Process Automation is a key component in the future empowered workforce.

  • Samsung Galaxy Note 9: Everything You Need To Know About Its AI Features

One of the biggest trends in the tech industry currently is artificial intelligence (AI) focused smartphones. So far, the AI features on these phones have been mostly centred around photography, user behaviour, security, and efficiency. Many smartphone manufacturers are gradually shifting to designing special AI-focused hardware and software in their newer models, and Samsung has not been any different.

    Bixby 2.0

In 2017, Samsung introduced its own intelligent virtual assistant ––  Bixby ––  along with its release of the Samsung S8 and S8+. According to Samsung, Bixby “learns what you like to do and works with your favourite apps and services to help you get more done.” The Galaxy Note 9 featured the release of the new Bixby, popularly called Bixby 2.0, which is based on powerful AI that will improve your experience using the phone.

One of the main features of Bixby 2.0 is its enhanced third-party app integrations. It has partnered with other apps like google maps to allow you to perform multiple tasks without needing to open up the apps separately.

This means you can call an uber using just a voice command, pull up directions from google maps with just one click, reserve tables at a restaurant and it will fill in reservation details based on your history without you opening the apps directly.

What makes Bixby even cooler is how easy it makes life for you. It intelligently learns what you like over time and makes recommendations to you based on your previous preferences/activity. For instance, if you ask Bixby which restaurants you can eat at, it will recommend restaurants based on where you’ve eaten before and other information stored about you.

    AI Camera

The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 also comes with a new and improved artificial intelligence camera. Say goodbye to having bad quality pictures because this phone has what they call a Dual Aperture lens. According to Samsung, it “intelligently adapts to the surrounding light like the human eye” to give clearer pictures no matter what.

It also has a scene optimizer feature that intelligently detects what the object is in a picture you’ve taken and then chooses from twenty different modes like food, flowers, etc and automatically enhances the images in terms of brightness, saturation, and many other things. It also shows you relevant information on the objects in the pictures you took.

For example, if you took a picture of a particular handbag, it can show you the name and make of the bag and where to find that same handbag online for sale. Pretty cool right?

Lastly, the AI camera has a flaw detection feature that notifies you immediately if the picture you took was blurry, if someone in the picture blinked, if the camera lens is dirty, or if the picture was too backlit. If you’re tired of using cliche captions like ‘Low quality

  • Why Everyone’s Buzzing about the Samsung Galaxy Note 9

It’s not news that Samsung is one of the leading smartphone vendors in the Nigerian market, and in the African market in general. This is no coincidence as the company is continually focused on meeting its customer’s needs with every new upgrade.

Its latest release the Galaxy Note 9, has everyone buzzing since its release late August. It is widely known that Samsung started its Galaxy note series to be intentionally designed for people who want to do more with their phone. Hence their tagline, ‘Do what can’t be done.’ The Galaxy Note 9 is equipped with powerful technology for its users to do more with a smartphone, focusing on solving issues that matter most in today’s mobile world.

So what’s the buzz all about, you might be wondering? Let’s look at some of the new features that are making this phone buzz-worthy.

Largest battery in a Galaxy Note device

The new Samsung Galaxy Note 9, although similar to the earlier model –– the Galaxy Note 8 –– has new features that have taken it from a great phone to an astounding phone. The battery is the biggest improvement.

Compared to the Note 8, this battery on this phone lasts a whole day after a single charge even when you are using it frequently – impressive! With a Galaxy Note 9 you can use your phone on the go without having to worry about charging it.

    Incredible display

With their largest infinity display, Samsung is giving us with an all-around cinematic experience with the Galaxy Note 9. It has a 6.4-inch bright screen with HD+ resolution. The screen also intelligently adjusts the contrast based on the light. Gone are the days of worrying about not being able to see the screen clearly in direct sunlight. The images are always clear and bright. The widescreen also makes it even more enjoyable to watch videos and play games.

    High Performance

Who wouldn’t love to use their phone for a long period without it heating up? The  Galaxy Note 9 is designed to eliminate just that.

You can freely play games, stream videos, multitask and do other time-consuming, demanding tasks on the phone without worrying about heating up the phone. Even more, because it can handle heavy usage, it still maintains its fast speed regardless of how you’re using it.

You can use many apps and features all day long without it becoming slower or hanging. You can’t say this about many other phones and that’s one of the things that makes the Note 9 stand out from the rest.

Enhanced productivity with a PC – like an experience

Samsung is making waves in the smartphone industry with their upgraded Dex software which allows you to get a PC – like an experience with their phone. The software is sold separately. After it is installed, all you have to do is connect your phone to a monitor using an HDMI cord.

Also, the Galaxy Note 9 comes with a Bluetooth stylus Pen. Not only can you write easily with the pen, but because of the Bluetooth function, you can also use it to change slides in a presentation, take pictures or even change the song on your playlist without you touching your phone. You can do all this by simply pressing a button on the pen. Cool right?

Like all that wasn’t enough, you’re also able to connect multiple Bluetooth devices at the same time to the Note 9. You can connect a mouse, a keyboard and headphones all at once. We like to call it a smartphone computer.

Is the Galaxy Note 9 worth the buzz?

There is a plethora of smartphones in the African market but it’s safe to say that Samsung continues to prove why it’s one of the leading smartphone companies. It has outdone itself with the new Galaxy Note 9 by marrying the needs of its target users with sophisticated technology. Its capabilities extend beyond the features mentioned here but one thing is for sure:  It is a device that does everything, and then more. What more could you ask for from a smartphone?

  • Impact Hub Lagos, Infinix Mobility Limited, partner with AskIfa.ng on the biggest Spoken Word Hangout in Lagos

It is rather strange to find a technology-based website devote its time to the development of raw talents in the most unconventional form of art. This is exactly what AskIfa.ng has been doing for the past six months with its Spoken Word Hangout, which is the brand’s way of giving back to a community of Young Nigerians who want to harness their skills in the craft of Spoken Word.

The monthly hangout is targeted at tackling core social issues using poetry, which has been successfully done over the past six months by an open community of Young Nigerian Spoken Word artists.

The event held at Impact Hub Lagos saw an in-flock of students of the University of Lagos as well as Yaba College Technology Lagos as they battle for the prize money attached to the event.

Infinix Mobility Limited was present at the CSR event to support the technology news site, beyond just what it had done before the event. As it was clear from the turnout of staff of the mobile brand at the event that the brand found itself in a perfect event that had its target audience housed outside the conventional theatrics of music and dance.

The theme of the month which focused on Sex Trafficking: Slavery-Saving saw Ikomu David Kayode, who goes by the stage name KC Pwesh emerge the winner of this month’s Spoken Word Battle.  Also, in attendance at the event was Ace Comedian Omo Baba (Fagade Olufemi) who was the host of the event.

Oslo, Norway 05 of September 2018 – Opera and Worldreader, the global nonprofit that believes everyone can be a reader, announced on International Literacy Day that African mobile users have spent more than 4 million hours of reading books on their mobile phones in 2018. This milestone represents an increase of 32 per cent from the same time period last year.

The partnership between Opera and Worldreader started in 2015 with the aim of bringing free e-books to millions of mobile users in Africa through Opera Mini, the leading mobile browser in data compression. The technology behind Opera Mini compresses text and images to 10 percent of their original size, reducing data consumption and the cost of data on a mobile phone and allowing users to spend more time reading and downloading their favorite books when using Worldreader.

Affordability and Convenience key for mobile reading

According to the latest report of Groupe Spéciale Mobile Association (GSMA), “The Mobile Economy Sub-Saharan Africa 2018”, at the end of last year there were more than 444 million unique mobile subscribers and 250 million smartphone users. These numbers represent a big opportunity to bring reading to millions in the Sub-Saharan region through technology.

We know that mobile phone affordability and the convenience of owning one are two big reasons why we are seeing more and more people accessing our e-book collection through their mobile devices in Africa”, said Colin Mcelwee, Co-Founder at Worldreader. “Our partnership with Opera Mini is a perfect match, with Opera browser being the number one choice for mobile users across Africa, it provides an incredible opportunity to get people reading.”

    Women read more than men

A study conducted by Worldreader, called Reading in the Mobile Era, showed that 65 percent of mobile readers in Africa are men while 35 percent are women. However, women tend to spend 11.5 minutes reading on average while men read 6.5 minutes per session, making women more frequent readers.

Moreover, African mobile readers prefer books related to love and romance, especially those that come from local authors and publishers. Below you can find a list of the most read books in Worldreader and Opera Mini in 2018.

We are truly excited to work with him as we bring Binomo’s unbeatable service offerings closer to the Nigerian and African market.”

Further highlighting the impressive service offering of the Binomo brand, he also spoke of the meticulous consideration that was put into ensuring the platform is easy to use for beginners.

“We’ve thought of everything down to the smallest detail. We provide our clients with the level of service that is of world-class standards. We feel it is our priority to offer the highest quality brokerage services and support, including beginner and professional level tutorials as well as analytical services and client support.”

The company has quickly become popular among young Nigerians, largely due to its catchy adverts that have dominated the internet, particularly on Youtube. The growing landscape of online trading and the emergence of the gig economy has made the Binomo value proposition a viable means of income.

While emphasizing the transparency of the platform and seamless learning curve, the Binomo team also quelled any fears that interested traders may have,

“Our collaboration with our clients is completely transparent, while our high-tech service allows traders to see the actual picture of the world’s financial markets, and to evaluate risks objectively,” he added.

With well thought promotional acts such as the Victor Moses partnership and with its masterfully designed platform, Binomo looks prime to build up a growing user base with a truly innovative platform that rewards the passion for online trading.

Binomo has won awards as Best Broker for Beginners (2015 Forex Expo Awards), Broker of the Year (2016 IAIR Awards) and rated ‘Category A’ by Financial Commission, an independent self-regulatory and external dispute resolution (EDR) body, dedicated specifically to Forex.

  • Partnering for Growth in Africa by Joe Kaeser, President and CEO of Siemens AG

Many African economies offer huge growth opportunities for local companies and global players alike. Tapping this potential and promoting growth and prosperity on the African continent requires new, strong partnerships across borders. Europe can play a crucial role in this. However, that requires new ways of thinking, new ways of politics and strong, trustful collaboration with African societies. It requires African solutions that create value in Africa for Africa.

According to an African proverb, “in the moment of crisis, the wise build bridges and the foolish build dams.” There is no denying that we live in times of uncertainty and growing insecurity, in times that are increasingly shaped by nationalism and exclusion, by narrow interests and populism. These are also particularly critical times for Africa’s development.

Nevertheless, Africa is a continent on the rise. African nations offer huge growth opportunities for local companies and global players alike. Even countries that are not rich in natural resources have a big chance to drive solid future growth by forging local partnerships in infrastructure investment, using digital technologies, and – above all – ensuring sustainable skills development.

Building – in a symbolic sense – strong, sustainable bridges between Europe and Africa can make a major contribution toward meeting this goal. Yet, Europeans too often ignore that this is the time to go for Africa, that this is the time to build new and stronger partnerships. But fulfilling this partnership role requires a new way of thinking, new policies and strong collaboration with African societies.

Africa needs solutions that create value in Africa for Africa. For example, the continent has a voracious demand for electrification and infrastructure. The urban population, for instance, is growing faster in Africa than it is elsewhere. As late as 1990, only 28 per cent of the population of sub-Saharan Africa was living in urban areas. By 2018, however, this figure had already climbed to 40 per cent – and forecasts anticipate that more than one out of every two people will be a city dweller by 2050. In other words: 30 years from now, more than 1.2 billion people in sub-Saharan Africa will be living in cities. The infrastructure in place today was not designed to support so many people. Ultimately, the task here will be to drive urban development in a way that is intelligent and sustainable – and make electricity and infrastructures affordable. The journey to this destination will frequently involve co-development between the private and public sectors.

There are very good reasons to make business in Africa. This continent is home to some of the world’s most dynamic markets. And Africa’s workforce is young. Half of the people living on the continent are under the age of 25. According to projections, Africa will be home to one in five of the planet’s young people by 2040, and the size of its labor force will exceed 1.1 billion by then. With a workforce of this magnitude, Africa has the potential to become one of the key players within the geo-economic order – provided that Africans can acquire the skills needed to actively shape this change.

In Africa, beyond the investments we make in our own employees, we closely collaborate with schools and universities across the length and breadth of the continent. We will continue our commitment to Africa, ensuring that students are able to train on the most advanced Siemens technology available, such as industrial software.

Only recently, we announced various hand-overs of Siemens technology related to industrial automation. Such grants are providing 13 engineering faculties at universities and schools in countries including Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Senegal, Tanzania, Kenya and South Africa with integrated engineering capabilities. Making this cooperation possible is part of our commitment to contributing toward sustainable skills development throughout the continent.

Unlike some others, we share our knowledge and expertise, and we train and educate young people. In other words: We invest for the long term and believe that playing an active role in skills development could enable locally engineered solutions to catalyze the industrialization of many African economies and trigger growth on an unprecedented scale. In West Africa, for instance, we must help develop and enhance young people’s technical and entrepreneurial skills to prepare them to hold their own in tomorrow’s digital, knowledge-based global economy.

Another key challenge for West Africa is climate change. Its impact is likely to be more severe in Africa, where regional weather patterns could be affected by global climate change. Phenomena like heat waves, draughts and floodings may cause substantial harm to African societies. Nevertheless, the fight against climate change could open up new opportunities for West African countries while improving their access to electricity.

With courage, clear decisions, strong partners and appropriate investments, these nations could become forerunners of a more sustainable economy, for example by deploying state-of-the-art environmental technologies in addition to highly efficient gas turbines. These efforts could help ensure a sustainable and reliable energy supply while improving the energy mix in many West African countries. Here, too, the countries of this region can count on Siemens as a trusted partner.

There’s a lot we can do to secure our common future. In 2017, our technologies enabled customers worldwide to reduce their carbon-dioxide emissions by 570 million metric tons. That’s more than twice the total carbon-dioxide emissions of West Africa.  As a leader in climate protection, we use these technologies ourselves. Siemens was the first major industrial company to commit to being carbon neutral by 2030. And we are well on our way toward reaching this ambitious goal.

Yet, reducing emissions is not the only motivation for us to ensure a sustainable energy supply for West Africa. Powering the countries of this region is imperative for us because energy provides a basis for the region’s economic growth. Prosperity always begins with energy. This resource is then followed by infrastructure in areas such as mobility and urban development. The third element is industrialization, and the fourth is services. However, all four of these elements are interrelated. They each represent one component of a successful, prosperous society.

An outstanding example of the growing economic and social impact of the fourth element – the service sector – is the Siemens Service Center in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. The centre is a high-tech facility that not only helps meet customer needs in the region and beyond but also provides high-skilled employment opportunities for the Nigerian population. It provides field services to customers in Nigeria, other parts of Africa and the rest of the world. Only recently, the centre received an order from one of the top five International Oil Companies, which is being supported with advanced digitalization solutions such as remote diagnostic services.

After all, one key trend that applies to Germany and Europe is prevalent in West Africa as well: Digitalization is transforming every industry and every society.

This transformation will no doubt bring about further challenges for all African countries: According to the McKinsey Global Institute report “Harnessing automation for a future that works”, 46 percent of all work activities in Nigeria might be susceptible to automation – as is the case with 51 percent in Ghana, 52 percent in Senegal, 44 percent in Ivory Coast. The experts estimate the automation potential for Kenya at 52 per cent, and for South Africa at 41 per cent.

On the other hand, these changes also create, especially in Africa, the opportunity to embrace new and exponential technologies combined with human talent to accelerate industrialization and drive economic growth.

In other words, electrification, automation and digitalization open up enormous potential for technological and societal progress in Africa. Siemens is the world’s most advanced digital industrial company and helps customers all over the world make use of digitalization’s potential – whether in energy, manufacturing, mobility, infrastructure, or healthcare.

From my point of view, every business has the responsibility to serve society – not just in the short term, but in a lasting way, for the benefit of future generations. We call this approach “Business to Society.” Of course, pursuing this objective in Africa requires a unique understanding of the challenges being faced across the continent and in each nation. At Siemens, we have this understanding. We aspire to “build bridges” instead of dams – and serve society throughout Africa.

  • Fashion and Data combine to Create Iconic African Designs

Johannesburg, 29 August 2018: The power of technology and fashion have combined in a thought-provoking project that demonstrates how data can transform African cities. Tech leader Siemens used data from the cities of Lagos, Nairobi and Johannesburg and wove it into unique fabrics which tell a story about each city. Three iconic African fashion designers then used the fabrics to create one-of-kind outfits, which are as stylish as they are smart!

FABRIC – launched in Johannesburg on 23 August – showcases how digitalization of the industrial world is fast becoming the biggest transformation of our time, and highlights how data combined with smart technology will ensure that tomorrow’s cities are more connected, efficient and powered.

Three iconic African fashion designers were brought on board to create 12 extraordinary outfits from vast amounts of data extracted from the cities of Nairobi, Lagos and Johannesburg.  The intricate garments by John Kaveke (Kenyan), Zizi Cardow (Nigerian) and Palesa Mokubung (South African) outline a variety of patterns from power grids, shipping and tonnage to population densities, transport and areas of connectivity. Data from each of these sectors tell a powerful story about each city and how digitalization can transform them. All of this is told through the universal language of fashion and design.

“This is how we thought to express the aspect of digitalization. As urbanization rapidly increases, cities need to start preparing for the effects it will have on infrastructure, energy, water and transportation systems,” said Keshin Govender, Group Communications Head for Siemens South Africa.

Data gives a greater insight into what makes each city tick, helping us make calculated decisions and improve service delivery to the people. Through the FABRIC project, it was evident that the challenge is not what to do with the avalanche of data but rather accessing reliable and recent data.

“This project has highlighted the need for access to data in order to make sound urban planning decisions,” explained Govender.

Siemens is well positioned in automation, electrification and digitalization to find solutions to the various challenges of today. It is uniquely positioned to unlock the potential of digitalization through its combination of digital expertise, domain know-how and understanding of hardware in order to leverage digital technologies and optimize operations.

While there is a growing adoption of intelligent machines within certain sectors like the automotive industry, the real opportunity for Africa lies in sectors where it has not yet been explored like manufacturing, energy and transportation. This is a remarkable opportunity for Africa which will result in the establishment of new industries and new jobs, while exponentially increasing skills development and contributing to GDP.

    Notes from designers:

Left to Right – Palesa Mokubung (South Africa), John Kaveke (Kenya), and Zizi Cardow (Nigeria)

Johannesburg-based Palesa Mokubung said this project had transformed her thinking. “It opened so many new elements of inspiration, it’s like I am only truly experiencing Johannesburg right now. I see Johannesburg as more dynamic with hidden opportunities underneath highways, pipes and houses. I’m forever changed when it comes to what I do and how I see the city.”

Nairobi-born John Kaveke said there was no better way to tell the story than through fashion.

“Fashion and technology are a universal language and the two combined create a formidable team,” he said.

Lagos-based Zizi Cardow said: “It’s time Africa equipped itself with information. Africa is often overlooked in terms of technology and science so pushing forward on these incredibly important aspects is the next step to propel the continent. Having more data about Africa means understanding our nations better and equipping ourselves to solve the problems we face.”

  • Academic Freedom Drives Progress in Tech – Eric Xu

During a recent interview discussing Huawei’s views on academic freedom and cooperation with universities, I made a comment about a US congressman and a senator. My intention was not to attack them, and I’m concerned that the public may have been misled by the current news headlines.

I’m a Ph.D. with experience in basic theory research, and my experience tells me that academic freedom and openness are of paramount importance to scientific research. That’s why I’ve decided to write this article, to provide a more comprehensive explanation of my views.

Academic freedom is a core value and basic aspect of modern universities. It is a precondition for a boom in academic research, scientific development, and an innovative workforce.

Academic freedom is also the cornerstone – and a basic right – of higher education institutions in the US. It is precisely because of this freedom from the interference of politics and other factors that the US can attract the world’s brightest minds to study and conduct research within its borders. Academic freedom is also a crucial factor behind the US’s continued status as a global technology leader, as well as its strength as a nation.

The National Science Foundation defines “basic research” as “activity aimed at acquiring new knowledge or understanding without specific, immediate commercial application or research.” Universities mainly work on basic research, while businesses focus on engineering and commercial application. It can take decades or even hundreds of years of R&D effort to close the huge gaps that may exist between basic theory and commercial application.

Collaboration between universities and businesses can effectively shorten this process. Nowadays, it is clearer than ever that science and technology are more closely integrated. The interplay of businesses, education institutions, and research institutions in basic research and innovation has become a major force behind the progress in science and technology.

US federal funding for higher education research has been falling steadily for the last decade. It now represents less than 50% of total university research funding in the US.

Corporate sponsorship has risen to close this gap. While the amount of funding Huawei has allocated for research in US universities is relatively modest, it has constituted welcome support for US university partners.

Huawei respects and supports academic freedom. Moving forward, we want to continue supporting academic research, in the form of funding, facilities, and lab equipment. Our collaboration with universities provides numerous opportunities for college and postgraduate students to gain training and hands-on experience. We believe our support is very important, while expecting no direct commercial return.

The research findings made possible through our joint university partnerships are shared openly across the world through dissertations and papers published by professors, PhDs, and postgraduate students alike. Like other corporate supporters of university research – including US-headquartered businesses that support Chinese universities – Huawei does not gain exclusive access to the resulting findings. Science has no national borders, and we hope the results from our university partnerships will ultimately benefit everyone in the world. Huawei never seeks to own their research results.

As a tech company, Huawei benefits from the general advancement of science and technology worldwide. But we remain competitive ourselves because we continuously invest in R&D. In 2017, Huawei invested US$13.8 billion in R&D, bringing our total contribution to global R&D in ICT over the last decade to more than US$60 billion. Huawei has been granted nearly 80,000 patents, including 10,000 patents in the US. Many of these are basic and essential patents. They represent our contributions to humanity, and also to the US’s information society.

It is a long, arduous journey before any basic research projects can deliver tangible benefits to society. This process requires close collaboration between universities and businesses. It requires the relentless effort of numerous scientists and engineers everywhere. These people deserve everyone’s respect – rather than groundless accusations – for their efforts and achievements.

Any open-minded politician should work to ensure academic freedom and drive progress in science and technology. They should do so with the same understanding, curiosity, and spirit of fact-finding endeavor displayed by the world’s leading scientists.
