What are your kids up to this summer? Coding is a big deal right now. Worldwide, about 40 million kids have taken part in “Hour of code” activities, helping them become active users of technology and jump start their learning of an essential part of this increasingly tech-driven world.
Even if your kids don’t go on to code for living, a basic understanding of programming concepts improves problem-solving and thinking skills which are both transferable and empowering. Platforms like Scratch and Alice have for a long time let children (and adults) create their own games and animations using simplified coding methods.
But not all kids can or want to jump straight into these sorts of environments, even after being downright comfortable around iPads and phone apps. Some kids require a guiding hand.
Nigerian IT companies are making moves towards teaching kids to code, and now you can register your kids for the CcHub’s KidZone ‘Summer of Code’ programme and let them gain the skills and confidence to grow from being consumers of technology to makers of technology.
At this year’s KidsZone ‘Summer of Code’ programme, kids between the ages of 9-14 years will have an opportunity to learn how to program and build projects using the Raspberry Pi. The curriculum will also cover programming in Scratch and Python. Children need no special prior technical knowledge – just an open eager mind.
The children will learn new skills and at the end of the programme, they will have found a new avenue to express their creativity through the practical coding sessions. In addition to this, kids will work in groups to complete projects thereby enhancing their teamwork, communication and presentation skills; and on the Demo day kids will have the opportunity to showcase the projects they’ve worked on over the summer to parents and their friends.
